You can also read walkthroughs in Japanese too.

http://ex-potion.com/ is a good site for FF (they have walkthroughs for every FF game =D)

Try searching 攻略 for others.

Are you guys using emulators to play these games or what?

I generally convert PSX games and play on my PSP, but yeah, I play them on emulator as well. This one is awesome:

Damn you, Tobberoth! I've always wanted to do that, but I never have the time to get a pandora+jigkick so I can switch my PSP to homebrew firmware. @__@

Japanese Game Method - bombpersons - 2009-07-26

If you have a friend who has a hacked PSP you can make your own pandora battery and magic memory stick =D

Japanese Game Method - Tobberoth - 2009-07-26

I hacked mine ages ago, before the Pandora Battery exploit was invented/found, using the GTA update. Good stuff. And awesome for training Japanese too, loads of japanese PSP games are readily available.

Japanese Game Method - KaitouJS - 2009-07-26

True, but the PSP isn't exactly region locked to begin with. Well, games can be region locked, but they aren't. UMDs can be, however.

How well does the PSX emulator on PSP run?

Japanese Game Method - bombpersons - 2009-07-26

Pretty much perfectly, every game I've tried has played full speed, no glitches or anything.

Also if you have a hacked PSP you can play snes / nes / dos / game boy / gba/ etc game as well =D

Japanese Game Method - strugglebunny - 2009-07-26

Probably quite well, considering Sony sells PSX games on their online service to be playable on the PSP.

I swear I already commented in this thread yet my post is nowhere to be seen. Weird.

Anyways, I'm going to pitch it again: Policenauts.

Not from me but it gives a decent summary.

Quote:"One of the most immersive masterpieces ever crafted"

Many people may have heard of this game. Policenauts was the follow up to the highly acclaimed Snatcher. Few games ever come close to equaling or surpassing its predecessor, but Policenauts does exactly that..and more..

Policenauts starts off in 2010 when Earth completes its' first space colony, Beyond Coast. Three years later, five men are selected to protect the colony. Gatse Becker from Scotland Yard, Joseph Sadaoki Tokugawa from Japan, Salvatore Toscanini from NY, and from L.A., Ed Brown and, you, Jonathan Ingram. During a routine spacewalk, Jonathans' suit mysteriously malfunctions and he his hurtled into deep space. 25 years later, he is miraculously discovered alive in his life pod, physically 28 years old, but in actuality, 55 years old.

Fast forward to 2040. Jonathan now heads an investigation agency in Old L.A. One night, his estranged wife, Lorraine, visits him and asks for his help in finding her husband, Kenzo, who has been missing for several days. Jonathan refuses and Lorraine leaves. As she leaves, Jonathan watches her go towards her car and notices a shadowy figure lurking in the shadows. Jonathan yells to stop her, but its too late. The car explodes. Jonathan chases after the culprit, but to no avail. He rushes back to Lorraines' side and, as she lays dying, she asks Jonathan, as her final wish, to find her husband and look after her daughter, Karen. She passes away, and Jonathan agrees to fulfill her final wish, and the adventure begins...
The entire game is basically a high quality "cut scene" that you investigate. Every bit of it is subbed and it features tons of voice acting. There is also a massive amount of things to investigate and click on but the best part of all is that the game is extremely linear so you really can't get "lost" in that regard.

How the game looks during actual gameplay:

Intro video:

Go research it for yourself and you'll see that it is universally praised as arguably the greatest video game story experience ever created. If you're a fan of 80's-early 90's "cyberpunk" type story lines then it is a must.

Japanese Game Method - KaitouJS - 2009-07-26

I've heard of Policenauts, but mostly through references to it in Metal Gear Solid. I'll have to look it up sometime.

Ive just gotten into Final Fantasy V Advance for the GBA using NO$GBA emulator. My comprehension skill is a bit weak, but i can understand about 90% of the duologue. Highly recommended for early intermediate students. Final Fantasy V Advance has an option to be payed in hiragana or kanji witch is great cause i hate hiragana games.

I play it on my Sony Vaio VGN-UX58 sort of like a Big PSP looking thing that plays PS1 games like a charm. Hell it will play anything up until PS2 no problem. And... it runs Anki! Tongue

Policenaughts is still too difficult for me but i will definutley play it within 6 months once my Japanese comprehension gets better.

Man, that Vaio looks slick!! But I'd stick with my PSP, strictly because I don't have the cash to throw. Tongue

Yeah same here though I haven't picked it up for a "progress check" in a few months and since I've almost gone through KO2001 book 1 in that time I might have to plug it in today when I get home.

Let me know how that goes. I would love to complete policenauts sooner or later. I played Snatcher witch is the same style of game made by Hideo Kojima on the SegaCD in English and it was one of my all time favorite games. Policenauts sounds like a really interesting story. Kinda like Patlabor, so i cant wait for my reading skill to get good so i can breeze through it.

Open Pandora sounds like a nice concept but its nowhere near as powerful as my Vaio UX. In a few years the price of those babies will drop, so just wait a little while. I got my for 3,000 Canadian in China. But studying Anki and playing PsX games on the subway and in class makes it totally worth it Tongue.

Japanese Game Method - activeaero - 2009-07-26

You actually know of Snatcher and have played it on Sega CD? We're officially best friends.

Snatcher is easily one of my top 3 favorite games of all time. I own it and my Sega CDX (a rare version of the Sega CD that combined it and the genesis into a near portable unit) to this very day.

Japanese Game Method - KaitouJS - 2009-07-26

Whoa! The CDX? This thing?

http://www.computercloset.org/segacdx.jpg

I didn't even know these existed. I only have the Genesis 2 along with the 32X and original CD.

Japanese Game Method - albion - 2009-07-26

I've still got both Snatcher and Policenauts (PS versions) waiting to be played. I think I'll play Policenauts when I've finished what I'm playing now.

(Did anyone find the Japanese script for Policenauts? I remember it being brought up here before, but don't recall it leading anywhere.)

Japanese Game Method - blackmacros - 2009-07-30

I searched for the other games thread (which had a few links to scripts) but couldn't find it, so here is good enough.

Does anyone have, or know where I can find, a script for Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I would basically love you forever.

PS. For anyone who is interested, this script for Chrono Trigger is awesome. http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Retranslation.html

Japanese Game Method - bombpersons - 2009-07-30

I finished FF1! w00t! Now onto FF2 =D

Thanks for the link! It looks awesome. Whenever i get the inkling to go through it again ill definutley use it.

So far i have done these games in japanese:

FF1 All done
FF2 About 20% in, on hold.
FF5 about 30% in, going through it right now.
Saga Frontier Finished 2 characters.

I recommend FF5. Its very easy to understand and the dialogue is just the right size not to bore you over.

Why don't we make this thread the Japanese game review thread? Post a game you are or have played and let everyone know how difficult the dialogue is. Tongue

Japanese Game Method - bombpersons - 2009-07-30

Ah, Good Idea =D

Ok, I'll start with Final Fantasy 1 (PSP ver)

I tried playing the original version, but for me it was too retro =( I just couldn't get used to it. I found that the psp version also had kanji, so I got that (theres also a FF2 port). Pretty much a very basic RPG. Save the crystals and beat the evil guy kind of thing.

When you start the game, you can actually choose from English, Kana and Kanji text. Pretty nice addition I think. From a learning Japanese perspective, there isn't actually much text. The story is very generic and basically all the characters have to say is, go to the cave at the north and save our princess etc, so there isn't much to get from it. From what little there is it varies from very easy to relatively hard. The latter mainly being from the more posh speaking folk like kings and scholars.

Quite good for a game just for playing, since even if you can't understand what certain person said the way forward is generally straight forward. That is until the second half of the game were I got totally lost. The whole map opened up and I had no idea where to go >.< I had to use a (Japanese) strategy guide to get through it, but with enough exploring I probably could have found the way.

Fighting is simple enough, and plenty of RPG related vocab there. All the spells are in katakana (I still can't read katakana very fast, need more practic >.<)

All in all good game, though I only played because I want to play them all in order =D If you're for an engaging story and lots of text however I would look elsewhere however.

Japanese Game Method - albion - 2009-07-30

Having a go at stuff I've played over the last few months.

デビルサマナー 葛葉ライドウ対アバドン王 (くずのはライドウたいアバドンおう)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shin_Megami_Tensei:_Devil_Summoner_2:_Raidou_Kuzunoha_vs._King_Abaddon

I've only really just started it, so I can't say much. But from judging from the first game, I'd say the dialogue is a step more difficult than your average FF. It's set in the past and filled with demonic characters which means some old-fashioned/non-standard speech shows up. It also doesn't uses standard system language for things like items or skills. Instead of アイテム it uses 道具, instead of 魔法・技 it's 特技, not ステータス but 状態. Not that that is really a major hurdle or anything, and things like 状態 and 道具 are basic words I think most people will know or learn soon enough.

ディシディア:ファイナルファンタジー
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissidia:_Final_Fantasy

Except for some Ivalice related game, I think most of Square(-Enix) games aren't too difficult to understand. The only parts in Dissidia I though were a bit tricky was the dialogue from Chaos. It's an action game, so playing it isn't really very demanding language-wise beyond the menu screens.
