If one were to start sentences before finishing RTK when would be a recommended time to start and would this have any negative effects as opposed to finishing RTK and then starting?

It'll be slower because a lot of the time you'll be switching back and forth between kanji resources (for new kanji) and sentence/dictionary resources. Spoken from experience here.

But not that much slower. Whatever keeps your interest, as that's really the most importand thing.

Don't. Finish RTK first. I finished at the end of June and am slowly finding time to do other Japanese studies (みんなの本語). My reviews still take a large portion of my time and would recommend against hurrying the knowledge acquisition process.

I can't really recommend a starting point but I do suggest using smart.fm and doing either the core lists or Kanji Odyssey 2001 lists. If you do sentences before doing RTK it's best to have lots and lots of audio so you can learn the words aurally.

I'd say just hammer on the RTK until it's done. It is meant to be done intensively and perhaps works best that way. Sure, it is frustrating to be studying this but not learn any japanese words, but if you focus, you can finish in a month or two, and then things will go well.

If you must, do RTK lite, and then Kanji Odyssey, or Kanji Odyssey and RTK together.

just run through RtK, the sentences that you'll study are much less of a kanji headache than without it...

Yeah, neg side effect, you will be far more easily frustrated with Japanese without having done RTK, just get it done, It only takes 22 days, tops, haha.

Don't stop RTK until you finish. Since the last 500 kanji is the kanji that I have seen the most when doing sentences. Or to be honest a majority of them are from the last 500. But if you really want to start sentences then go to Tae Kim's website and start with those because those sentences are so easy and fundamentally sound that you could even understand. Also if your below fram 1500, I don't quite suggest it but if your anywhere between 1700-2042 go ahead.

22 days "tops"? Haha, not all of us are THAT fast at learning. Even I got a headstart with 100/day but I had to knock it down to 50-75 a day on average.

Definitely finish RtK first, I tried to move to sentences at around # 1300 and it was a big hassle. It took much longer to learn how to read sentences with kanji I wasn't familiar with. Then I would forget many of them next week, and get mixed up with the others.

Just plow through RtK, make good stories and hammer them down as you review later. You're going to be reviewing RtK for the next 6 months anyways.

IceCream Wrote:i think most people disagree with me, but i really don't think RTK helps with a lot except writing. If you're not bothered about writing the kanji, it's not necessary. I studied a little bit of RTK before giving up, and i can honestly say that the one's i've studied haven't been any easier to learn in sentences than the ones I haven't.
The areas you can expect to have a little more trouble on are:
*Kanji that look similar (e.g. just the radical is different). To help with this, just have a good idea of the major radicals, and make sure you're taking note of which one it is when you're looking at a sentence.
*Recognising that a kanji in one compound is the same as a kanji in another compound. However, i think once you've seen the kanji in a few compounds, you know it anyway, and you kind of just get the shared meaning, so this isn't a big deal.
You won't be able to write though.
There's a list of the RTK in japanese, so when you decide you want to be able to write, you can go back and do it this way, when you can already read and pronounce them.
On the contrary, I couldn't live without it! I could see how you could learn to read without it, personally I feel those mental hooks that RTK provides in recognizing, remembering and recreating kanji are valuable to no end, however when the case is that the keyword is almost totally unrelated to the word you're trying to learn, its like you're on you're own anyway. I don't tend to find this a huge problem because when encountering a word like, if it's a 2 kanji word, my brain only has to remember 2 facts! which is much simpler than trying to recall random squiggles, or distinguish between which kanji these COULD be.

To summarize... it boosts reading ability BIG time. Or it wouldn't exist.

Anyways, back on topic. Stick to RTK first, finish it, then do sentences. Why? Reviews take up a LOT of time and you really don't want to have to do 2 sets per day if you can help it.

Just finish RTK first. I wish I had. Doing reviews for RTK and then reviewing vocab and sentences had me thinking of giving up more than once.

Actually since I just finished RTK, and am adding sentences each day, it still sucks, but eventually the RTK will go away. Don't burden yourself so early if it isn't necessary.
