So what manga would you all recommend for relative beginners? I've finished RTK1, so kanji no longer scare me, but furigana are still helpful. I've also worked through Genki 1, Human Japanese, and some of Core 2000. But Naruto is a tough read for me. Is there something easier I might try?

Mangas by Adachi Mitsuru are usually quite easy. They are mostly sport & love related. The sport terms might be new for you, but they will stick naturally. I learned basic rules of baseball by reading his baseball related mangas Smile I would recommend Miyuki for starters - it should be fairly simple, since it's a school manga. Touch is a classic and is often referred in anime/dramas. You might also try Rough or Katsu - the former is about swimming, the latter is boxing oriented.

On a side note, if you'd prefer to read in small chunks then I'd recommend Mangajin. This magazine is a very nice resource. It has manga presented in the following format: a page of raw manga on one side, translation + detailed explanation on the other.

Thank you, kimagure -- those sound like wonderful suggestions.

I'm quite a fan of 'Tokyo Tribe 2', it's a pretty fierce manga and anime series about gangs in Tokyo. If you're a fan of hip hop, violence, girls and politics, you'll probably like it. Definitely not for the kids. It's been published in English as well, for times when you want to make sure you've understood what's going on.

Also, 'Sky High' is a pretty good 2 volume (I think) 'graphic novel' about vengeance and murder. this has been made into a live action series and film, both reasonably good.

Golgo 13 is another pretty sweet series about a 'God of Snipers' James Bond character that goes around kicking ass against the backdrop if intrigue and world politics.

As for easy manga; I'd have to second the recommendation for Yotsuba&! there's also a word list for the first volume on smart.fm. I've found that 'pre gaming' things I read by pulling out the word list from them and running through it quickly in the SRS helps with the frustration of not knowing what the hell I'm reading! Smile

If anyone knows of any other manga similar to Tokyo Tribe I'd love to hear about it!

Tokyo Tribe 2 sounds a lot like "I.W.G.P." (Ikebukuro West Gate Park), which is the best JDrama I've ever seen. I'm not sure if you've seen it already.

You can find in subbed in English on D-addicts.

The recent manga are apparently written by a different author. So they're not as good
as the earlier manga.

But yeah, IWGP is easily my favorite J-Drama of all time.
They were planning to make a sequel to the drama series.

But the show became so popular that gangs modeled after the TV show
were popping up all over Tokyo and the TV producers were forced to abandon
plans for a second season.

Yeah, it was that good.
And don't forget to watch the TV special that comes after the TV series.

Thanks, this is pretty nice. One thing with their manga that gives me some problems is the lack of furigana. I can get through it now, since I've done most of RTK1, but a month ago, I would have been completely lost, or at least, only comprehending the parts that are in kana.
