Reccomended Manga? - bombpersons - 2009-07-16 I've ran out out stuff to read =( Any recommendations for some good manga? Heres my recommendations: 1. One Piece - Yay, Pirates! 2. To-Love-Ru - Real simple and easy to read, with lots of eye candy =D 3. Fairy Tail - Shounen manga about Mages, similar art style to One Piece. Reccomended Manga? - igordesu - 2009-07-16 Some of these are embarrassing to admit, but here goes: 1. Vampire Knight 2. Neon genesis evangelion 3. Inuyasha (I was surprised at how much better this was in japanese than english) 4. Faster than a Kiss (キスよりも早く) <---I'm lame, but the manga's good ![]() 5. Death Note (duh) Reccomended Manga? - danieldesu - 2009-07-16 1. GTO - hilarious 2. クレヨンしんちゃん - also funny, in a different way Reccomended Manga? - cracky - 2009-07-16 1. Rurouni Kenshin - Classic. 2. Junk: Record of the last hero - Cool suit manga about somebody who's anything but a hero. 3. Fullmetal Alchemist - A lot of twists in the story that make this one good. 4. Claymore - Interesting to see the females being the warriors and the guy stuck as a sidekick. 5. Gantz - A bit too much shock value stuff, but underneath it there is still an interesting story being told. 6. Hunter X Hunter - Picked back up again. 7. Berserk - One of my favorites. 8. Recca- Same. Reccomended Manga? - Tobberoth - 2009-07-16 Hachimitsu to Kuro-ba- is awesome in its anime form and also very very good as a manga. I would rate it decently hard to read, definitely harder than the shonen generally mentioned in lists like these. As mentioned, Kureyon shinchan is awesome as well, especially since the chapters are so short, makes it fitting for beginners. School Rumble is quite cute. I personally feel this serie gets worse the more I read it though. The first volume was awesome and funny. After that, a lot more characters were introduced and are used sort of randomly (why was kenjis little brother given an introduction in the last part of the first volume, then shows up seemingly randomly in volume 4 without any explanation?). The serie has a tendency to seem realistic and then take an insane turn (like all those animals following kenji, wtf?). Reccomended Manga? - Evil_Dragon - 2009-07-16 Full Metal Alchemist. The story, frequent twists and developed characters will make you go OH SHI-. By far my favorite. Code:Breaker. Kind of new and I doubt many people know it, so it's more or less my insider' tip. What I really like about this manga is how you can hate the antagonists with a passion (in other mangas I usually think they are cute) but how at the same time it manages to question the concept of good and evil. Mangas by Urasawa Naoki (e.g. Pluto, 20 Seiki Shounen, Monster). This guy is just crazy. Check it out! Detroit Metal City. A guy who loves Swedish popmusic ends up in a death metal band. Beyond hilarious!

Reccomended Manga? - Evil_Dragon - 2009-07-16 Tobberoth Wrote:There is such a thing?Check it out, just stay the hell away from that godawful DMC movie. There's not much Swedish pop to be found however..
Reccomended Manga? - dbh2ppa - 2009-07-16 20世紀少年... old and no furigana, but the mere concentration of kanji makes it easier to read for RTKers than most furigana'ized manga*, and the story rocks (though the beginning is slowish). +1 on the 鋼の錬金術師. *(Try reading カードキャプターさくら or any other manga for twelve year olds and you'll know what I mean.. damn meaningless kana!!!) Reccomended Manga? - thermal - 2009-07-16 20世紀少年 - 20 century boys is crack. Reccomended Manga? - nadiatims - 2009-07-16 I've read a bunch of Tezuka Osamu: ブラックジャック ブッダ 三つ目が通る 海のトリトン Stories are kind of lame but very readable. currently reading Dr SLUMP by Toriyama Akira (of dragonball fame). Good stuff. Uses mostly hiragana, and almost everythingis heavily contracted/slangy. Definately the funniest manga I've read. I would rate it decently hard to read, definitely harder than the shonen generally mentioned in lists like these.Might I also add that there is a great drama of it as well ^_^ and you can get it both subbed and raw at d-addicts ^^; As for me, I'm reading HachiKuro and actually Cardcaptor Sakura but I love clamp XD I find CCS to be a very easy read and while yeah there is furigana... I use it mainly as practice at just my comprehension since I'm not very far in RTK.... also it's a nice confidence booster to get through a lot of it and not need the dictionary ^^. I mainly use my doujinshi for Kanji practice as well as DS games since a lot of doujinshi (if not all) don't have furigana but the kanji compounds aren't so obscure that you go WTF? Reccomended Manga? - TheTrueBlue - 2009-07-16 For those starting out in the Kanji biz, I recommend the bestselling slice-of-life manga Yotsuba. It's geared towards younger readers and has only simpler everyday kanji, used in a slow but steady pace that you can then look up and learn as you read and laugh along. Huzzah for being as kanji literate as Japanese grade schoolers! Reccomended Manga? - Burritolingus - 2009-07-16 I second pretty much all of cracky's recommendations, some really good stuff in there and quite a variety to boot. Berserk ranks as my favorite manga of all time, tied with ジョジョの奇妙な冒険 which is my recommendation. The first three arcs (Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency and Stardust Crusaders) are just about as good as you can get as far as 少年 goes, and continues to inspire anime and manga to this day. Some of the most inventive combat and most entertaining characters eeever! It's just a shame that the fourth arc is so dismal (in comparison, at least), but hey, all long running manga has their slumps. TheTrueBlue Wrote:For those starting out in the Kanji biz, I recommend the bestselling slice-of-life manga Yotsuba.I concur! It's incredibly easy to read and is pretty much guaranteed to put a grin on your face. It's also quite an encouragement boost being able to almost fully comprehend a manga for the first time (which happened to me with this very manga some months back). I also second Detroit Metal City, which is probably the funniest anime and manga I've ever seen/read. It's also FILLED with hilariously filthy language (in both English AND Japanese) which is a plus! I also concur that the live action movie was pretty terrible, though it had its moments. Kudos for that alone!OnT: I forgot to mention Gintama. There probably is not a single person around here who did not read about it. But it is so good I'll just recommend it anyway! Reccomended Manga? - Zarxrax - 2009-07-17 よつばと! Most of the dialog towards the kids is very easy to understand, I found that it only got a bit difficult when adults spoke to each other, which wasn't often. Also it's about a lot of normal everyday stuff. Reccomended Manga? - albion - 2009-07-17 I read よつばと! the other day after seeing it recommended so much, and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Reccomended Manga? - nonpoint - 2009-07-17 I've only read GTO so my recommendation is... well... GTO. Great Teacher Onizuka Reccomended Manga? - wccrawford - 2009-07-17 TheTrueBlue Wrote:For those starting out in the Kanji biz, I recommend the bestselling slice-of-life manga Yotsuba.Yotsuba& is definitely my recommendation for a first manga. With no vocab, it's hard to read, but possible. With some vocab, it's fun to read. Once you can read it easily, it's time for some shounen manga... Which will start the cycle all over again. Reccomended Manga? - kumadondon - 2009-07-19 こちら亀有公園派出所 (kochira kameari kouen hashutsujo) Funny manga about a cop and his workmates, dude gets into ridiculous situations and the text is good to read. The earlier volumes didn't have furigana, but the newer ones do. You can pick it up monthly at most conbinis. クレヨンしんちゃん Crayon Shinchan This manga helped me to where my language skills are today. Read all of the stuff for a year, studied, lived in Tokyo... One year later, I got the language down enough to attend Fashion College here. (I'd suggest reading a more varied seleciton of manga, the grammar and stuff is good, but the syntax is few and repetitive. YMMV) My favorite, 魁!クロマティ高校! Sakigake, Cromartie Koukou! Funniest damn manga I have ever read. Enough said. Reccomended Manga? - thorstenu - 2009-07-19 wccrawford Wrote:Somehow I am really afraid that I am doing something wrong. I learned Japanese for around 8 months... RTK, Tae Kim (Basic+Essential) and now Im doing ko2001. I own the first Yotsuba manga and I don't find it easy at all because it is (or appears to me) "spoken Japanese" that doesn't seem to have much similarities to the nice sentences I learned. Everything looks fragmented, is full with te-forms and many っ, so I cant even look up things when I have to. I read some Chapters in an English translation, there were a lot of play on words and Yotsuba seems to use a weird language sometimes. I can't believe a beginner or even intermediate can understand that much from those constructions, if any. Im starting to feel really stupid when everyones here is talking about how easy Yotsuba is for beginners... Reccomended Manga? - Codexus - 2009-07-19 thorstenu Wrote:Im starting to feel really stupid when everyones here is talking about how easy Yotsuba is for beginners...First don't get discouraged, the road is long for all of us, don't worry you'll get there if you keep going at it. Now, I find よつばと to be simply the easiest manga I've read (or attempted to read ) in Japanese but that doesn't mean it's a piece of cake for everyone. If that's basically the first time you're being exposed to real casual Japanese there is a lot that will confuse you. Nice example sentences from dictionaries or KO2001 will not prepare you for that. Now what can you do to get over that wall? 1) Simply read it. Don't worry if you don't understand just read. And not just the first volume read the whole thing and read some other manga too. Just reading will help gain the experience needed for better understanding. Watching anime can also help. 2) Read some explanations about casual Japanese. Some japanesepod101 podcasts focus on casual Japanese. The old Mangajin magazines used to decode manga line by line. There are a few books with explanations too. Unfortunately, I don't really know one resource that contains everything you need to know but the information is out there. 3) Ask questions on forums, I'm not saying you should post every sentence you don't understand but when you start noticing some repeating pattern that bothers you, it's OK to ask. 4) Keep learning more vocabulary and grammar with sentences. You just need to accumulate a lot of vocabulary and grammatical patterns. Try to go as fast as you can. Reccomended Manga? - kumadondon - 2009-07-19 Codexus Wrote:1) Simply read it.Agreed. The first ever manga I ever read (Doraemon) I couldn't understand a single thing. I read the hiragana ever so slowly, I had no dictionary... I was confused as hell (what's all this hoo-ah, where are my 私's and ですか's darn it this isn't Japanese this is hullabaloo) Just keep going, man. Before you know it, you're in the conbini 立読みing while the clerks are thinking やばい、外人だ!アイツ出させたいけど英語さっぱり解らんぞ?!どうしよー Reccomended Manga? - AmberUK - 2009-07-19 So about a year from starting manga to get it? Though its a long time. It is good to know how long is reasonable to have to be plugging away at it.
