Twinkle users - synewave - 2007-01-28 After fiddling about with Mnemosyne but still not being able to get it going on my Mac, I've ordered a Palm so am soon going to be joining you. Using Twinkedit I have made a list of JLPT2 kanji compounds from past tests (Q. kanji, A. reading). If anyone would like to try it, here it is. Please tell me if it works. I used Shift-JIS encoding. Twinkle users - scooterinjapan - 2007-01-28 Synewave, where did you order your Palm from? They used to be sold in Japan, but Palm pulled out of the country from what I was told. Are you having it delivered directly to you? Cheers, Scooter Twinkle users - synewave - 2007-01-28 My brother is getting one for me on his way over here. Twinkle users - laxxy - 2007-01-28 A nice list, it works. It depends on your Palm though -- if this is a local used Japanese model with shift-JIS encoding then you've done it right I think; my Palm is not set up for Japanese and I am using Twinkle fonts, if that is going tobe the case for you you should set encoding to EUC *and* font to "Japanese" in the Edit->Fields menu in Twinkedit. I've removed duplicates (including some ~い/~く entries) and added some translations (via my handmade excel spreadsheet which does not cover all words, i need to make it use the full updated edict i guess...) -- here is the file, please take a look. http://rapidshare.com/files/13866610/rtk2.pdb.html Also, what is the order here? numbers in this file are as in your original so you can see what I removed. Are you having it delivered directly to you?Shouldn't one be able to get a used one (Palm or Sony Clie or smth) on whatever stands for Ebay or Amazon Marketplace, etc. in Japan? (although I recall people saying that getting an used English one shipped from the US could be less expensive). Twinkle users - synewave - 2007-01-28 Thanks for the info laxxy. I'm trying to get all my data formatted so that when my Palm arrives, I can get going straight away. Basically I've decided to go for Twinkle as I have been using Mnemosyne on my Win98 PC at work and trying to get it running on my Mac at home (not managed it yet!). Rather than maintaining 2 databases and continually transferring stuff across I reckon keeping a Palm in my pocket could be the answer. That list I uploaded is basically kanji from past JLPT2 tests from 1991-2004 or something. As they are words from the tests each year, some were likely to be repeated. As you'll have seen, there are both ON and KUNyomi readings in the list. Not that I know all the words, I'm going to use that list simply for reading practice. Other lists that I'm building are: example sentences to quiz grammar for JLPT2; example sentences for 漢字検定 level 7; verb + object collocations; useful phrases. I'm also maintaining an RTK2 spreadsheet and dropping the above sentences in so eventually I'll have an example sentence for each and every frame in RTK2. Whether or not this stuff is useful to others or not is debatable but I'm quite willing to share what I've got. EDIT: I've got another question...in Mnemosyne you can use "<br>" to start an new line within the same field. Is that the same for Twinkle? I'll have a look at that file you sent when I get home as I don't have Twinkedit at work. Quote:Other lists that I'm building are: example sentences to quiz grammar for JLPT2; example sentences for 漢字検定 level 7; verb + object collocations; useful phrases.I'd be quite interested in some of those. I have a wordlist for Kanji in Kontext with examples (up to lesson 6, inclusive), and RTK1 of course. And a couple wordlists for some comic books, with examples ![]() One can set them up as Google spreadsheets for example, and then just copy/paste to and from Excel and TwinkEdit, it is also possible to share and collaborate on these easily that way. Quote:EDIT: I've got another question...in Mnemosyne you can use "<br>" to start an new line within the same field. Is that the same for Twinkle? No, it does not work. You can enter a return into any field from within Twinkle itself (i.e. on Palm), but I do not know how to do this in TwinkEdit. I wonder what would happen if you paste a cell with a CR in it from Excel into TwinkEdit... Twinkle users - synewave - 2007-01-28 laxxy Wrote:I see. Are these words "extra" words not included in JPLT3+? Or is it a partial list for 2-4?These are words that were tested in JLPT2 actual exams between 1991-2003/4. There may well be some kanji from level 3/4 in there however I just took the words from the JLPT2 tests. laxxy Wrote:No, it does not work. Twinkle users - laxxy - 2007-01-28 Note that there is no limit on how many fields you display, so if you want to display two lines of different information for multiple cards, you can just create two fields and they will display in different lines (wrapping if necessary). I've entered CRs manually in several cards to improve formatting, but this is really something that should be done on palm as formatting depends on how many characters fit in a line, etc. btw -- you may also want to set the font for the important English fields to large bold. EDIT: >laxxy - Which Japanese font do you recommend? EDIT2: >laxxy - yeah, your Kanji in Context file might be useful. I don't use the book but hear it's pretty good. I'm in the process of putting together a basic website so I'm going to make the files I use available there. Twinkle users - laxxy - 2007-01-29 synewave Wrote:You go to Edit->Fields in TwinkEdit and add new fields as you see fit (and use Edit->Field Positions to choose which fields show on which side of a card and in what order; a field can be shown on one, both, or neither side), all this can be done within Twinkle too of course.laxxy Wrote:Note that there is no limit on how many fields you display, so if you want to display two lines of different information for multiple cards, you can just create two fields and they will display in different linesTo do this do you use TAB to create another field? Twinkle users - synewave - 2007-01-29 > laxxy - Don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I can't see any data in your file that I downloaded. I downloaded RTK2.pdb; launched Twinkedit; then opened the file using File > open. It opens a file, the tab at the top says "Dynamic View 0" but there is no data there...any ideas? The file I downloaded is 60Kb. FYI - I'm going for a cheap Palm. Probably the Palm Z22. Don't need anything fancy as I'm really only buying it to use Twinkle. Twinkle users - laxxy - 2007-01-29 Hmm, that is interesting -- email me and i'll send you the file as an attachment. Twinkle users - synewave - 2007-01-29 And another question...can you remove duplicates in Twinkedit or using Twinkle itself? Twinkle users - laxxy - 2007-01-29 I re-dl'd the file from rapidshare and looks like it got somehow corrupted on upload. I've sent it to you again. synewave Wrote:And another question...can you remove duplicates in Twinkedit or using Twinkle itself?I just used Excel. Twinkle users - synewave - 2007-01-29 I got your files, thanks! Rather than PM, I'll keep asking you Twinkle questions on the forum coz they might be of interest to others... laxxy Wrote:I just used Excel. So you can copy and paste from Excel in to Twinkedit? I'm like a little kid before Christmas...still got to wait about 10 days for my brother to arrive with PDA in hand! Quote:Rather than PM, I'll keep asking you Twinkle questions on the forum coz they might be of interest to others...sure, go ahead. Quote:Yes, very convenient. Do not drag columns around to change their order though, as there is a minor bug in the current version that will screw up pasting if you do that.laxxy Wrote:I just used Excel. So you can copy and paste from Excel in to Twinkedit? Quote:I'm like a little kid before Christmas...still got to wait about 10 days for my brother to arrive with PDA in hand!Weird, in US used palms are like a dime a dozen on ebay... I myself have a Samsung i500 palm cell phone, which works quite nicely for Twinkle since I can map all the answers to the keyboard and buttons and review without touching the screen, ever (except to pick the stack). The current algorithm is pretty nice, especially for learning new cards, and the nicest part is that it can show you the previous and the next interval depending on your answer -- so there is direct feedback, which helps a lot. A small fly in the ointment: it now seems to me that it is a bit weaker for maintenance reviewing in some cases, too aggressive for my liking, I'd like the intervals to increase faster (although the max interval is at ~2048 iirc). But this is something that can and will be improved: I'm discussing this with the author now, and the source code is free anyway (now I only need to figure out how to compile it). You may want to check out sf.net discussions forums for PADict too, there is a link to a page of someone who made quite an impressive setup including Eijiro (same as alc.co.jp) with examples on a Palm linked to PADict there. I haven't done that myself and it sounded like quite a complicated procedure, but the end result sounded quite impressive, perhaps better than any pocket dictionary. |
