A minor help for major sentence mining - Garland - 2009-07-11 Hello, I have found what I think is a little, yet relatively nice help in adding sentences, and I thought thought some of you might find it useful, (if not, then writing about your own, better way of adding sentences would be nice). When digging words from Japanese texts, I always thought it would be nice if one could read through the whole text, highlight all the unknown words/sentences (possibly translating then with Rikaichan in the process), have them automatically transfered to some easilly accesibly database, and then, having finished the reading, copy them to Anki. That way, one could parse the text as a whole and concentrate on the reading itself, instead of having to switch to anki everytime one encountred a new word. For a long time, I couldn't find anything for the purpose, but yesterday, when repairing my Windows Gadgets, I found something even better : Yahoo widgets !...which are exatly the same as gadgets, but have different design. Among the many useful tools (http://widgets.yahoo.com/search/?q=jenerator is good for some non-violent immersion) is one called ClipDrop (http://widgets.yahoo.com/widgets/clipdrop) that stores a selected number of sentences put in clipboard, displays them in a queue and then enables one to fetch each sentence by simply clicking on it. This basically makes it possible to easily make a list of sentences for Anki, while not interrupting the actual reading. The method I now use to grab the sentences is as follows: 1) Find some Japanese text 2) When seeing an unknown word, look for its meaning and reading with Rikaichan (that way, I won't have to look later, when adding the sentence to Anki) 3) Highlight it, which copies it to clipboard (using Autocopy, a firefox plugin), which copies it to ClipDrop 4) Keep on reading and repeat the steps 2-4 until you have finished 5) Open Anki, transfer the senteces by clicking on them in ClipDrop, and edit them however you see fit Following this method is saving me some precious time and energy and I think it may be useful for you guys as well (the Yahoo widgets only work on Windows and Mac, but those with Linux certainly use better tools anyways). If however, you know of something faster or easier then by all means says so, I'd be happy to learn about it. P.S. What happened to the thread about stinking foreigners? Reading it kept me from going to bed. A minor help for major sentence mining - Nukemarine - 2009-07-11 Good application. For the foreigner thread, it's likely the OP deleted his post, which deletes the entire thread. It's happened before, most memorably with the Tanuki thread. Fabrice doesn't like that the system allows for it, but I don't think he's able to prevent it. A minor help for major sentence mining - Tobberoth - 2009-07-11 It's possible Fabrice deleted it since it got pretty offensive at some parts (especially Ahibbas racist comments) but he usually just locks threads and lets us know, so yeah, it was probably the OP. To quote someone from that thread: "it ain't going to be solved on a kanji forum." EDIT: Garland, thanks for posting the link. I'm definitely going to check it out. Looks like Yahoo widgets don't work in dashboard however.. I don't want to install Yahoo's engine so I'll have to look into this further... A minor help for major sentence mining - ahibba - 2009-07-11 Nice idea. Actually, there are many programs which do the same thing like: http://www.banaban.net I made a similar program using the freeware AutoHotKey. My program has another advantage. When you select the unknown word, you press a key to copy it as a question, then you can select the whole sentence and press another key to copy the sentence as an answer (as an example sentence for that word.) Everything is done automatically, you don't need to switch endlessly between applications while producing the list. It savee the switching back and forth, as well as all of the pasting. I didn't post any racist comments. Scientific facts are not racism. A minor help for major sentence mining - Garland - 2009-07-11 I believe that racists are best ignored. Sure, it's a bad idea to ignore them when they're pointing a pistol at your pineal glands (or whatever glands the Japanese don't have), but they have no pistol in here. A minor help for major sentence mining - ahibba - 2009-07-11 This comment is unscientifc and obviously racist. I have pineal glands. I think Linux users are programmers or have high technical skills. Anyway, I think there is a Linux version for AutoHotKey, you can make similar programs using this freeware (also you can try AutoIt.) I'll try to upload my program soon. It may work on Linux. A minor help for major sentence mining - yukamina - 2009-07-11 I use the firefox add-on Split Browser for my sentence mining set up. This way I can drag and drop: Sentences into Trinity Words into Yahoo dictionary Definitions into Trinity And it's all on the same screen, so I can see everything at the same time. I set the reading source on the left, dictionary site on the right, and Trinity on the bottom. If I need a 4th page, I just keep it on a separate tab so the screen doesn't get too cluttered. I can set up parallel texts this way too. L2 site on one side and L1 site on the other. A minor help for major sentence mining - Mcjon01 - 2009-07-11 IceCream Wrote:What is Trinity?
