Just a heads up to the latest iAnki update.

You can now install iAnki from "Shared Plugins" in Anki.

The latest version (0.3.1) fixes some annoyances in prior versions, and also lets you sync multiple decks in one go without having to open them each in turn.

iAnki update - Nii87 - 2009-07-06

Hooray! I was worried iAnki was stuck in development limbo or something.

iAnki update - totsubo - 2009-07-09

Trying to get it to work with the new iPhone 3GS I just bought in Tokyo. No luck so far getting Safari to connect to my Anki running on Ubuntu .... fuu~~~

Are you on a wifi network?

iAnki update - totsubo - 2009-07-09

Yup. Connect to my home's network.

I started iAnki on my machine and got this message:

Starting server at 192.168.1.22:8000.
Server started.

And then try to connect to 192.168.1.22:8000 from my iPhone but get a timeout message "Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding".

I can access iAnki from the PC running iAnki so it is definitely up.

Firewall issue? I don't think I have any firewall rules on my PC. Perhaps the wireless router does but I would not know how to check.

I tried setting the port to 80 but got an error saying 'permission denied'. To test that my router is not the problem is there a way for me to run Anki so it can use port 80?

iAnki update - totsubo - 2009-07-09

Was able to check my wifi router and don't see any rules that would block this.

iAnki update - Jarvik7 - 2009-07-09

Wifi router firewalls have no relation. Those rules govern WAN->LAN traffic, and iAnki operates within the LAN. Likely your OS firewall or security settings are blocking it. Turn it off and try again.

iAnki update - totsubo - 2009-07-09

I'm using Ubuntu. As far as I can tell there are no OS level firewall rules:

$iptables -L

Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Are you sure your iphone can contact the pc at all? ex: SSH etc
It might not be an iAnki problem.

iAnki update - totsubo - 2009-07-09

Could be. I just got my iPhone and it is not jailbroken (I'm not sure I want to). Don't know how to SSH from the iPhone.

Is there an easy way to test that the connection can be made?

I would have thought that it is possible by default since the instructions for using iAnki don't mention having to do anything special on that front.

iAnki update - Jarvik7 - 2009-07-09

There is nothing special to do, assuming your iPhone is connecting to your wifi and grabbing an IP properly, and that your desktop is suitably opened up for connections from the outside.

There are some appstore ssh clients but I've never used them, being jailbroken.

iAnki update - totsubo - 2009-07-09

Iphone is connected to my wifi (as far as I can tell. In setting, I see wifi:on, and a check mark next to my home network name. That means I am connected right? I can surf the web so assume I am connected)

It's not Anki that would stop you from using port 80; it's the system. Maybe 80 is being used by something else.

Do you have another PC that you can try connecting to the one that iAnki Server is running on?

iAnki update - totsubo - 2009-07-09

Ports below 1024 are reserved and can only be used if a program is running with the proper priviliges. I assume anki is not.

Unfortunately I only have the on PC. I will see if I can get a second one to test this out.

There's a new update (0.4.1).

This has a UI makeover contributed by another user,
and plus you can now sync the custom font settings from Anki.

iAnki update - totsubo - 2009-07-14

Will definitely try that out.

As for my other issue it was not iAnki. Rebooting the wifi router fixed it. Don't know why that would do it but hey, I'll take it!

iAnki update - Acheron - 2009-07-14

Totsubo, im pretty sure that port 80 is the port for internet access, try a different one, and i hope that works for you!

As for me, i was just wondering how long it takes to sync for the first time?

Ive put my amount of cards on 200, and its taking a long time.

Thanks in advance Big Grin

iAnki update - vosmiura - 2009-07-14

10-20 seconds? It depends on how good the connection is.

iAnki update - vosmiura - 2009-07-16

A few more updates up to 0.4.4, including furigana support and scaling setting.

iAnki update - Jarvik7 - 2009-07-16

@vosmiura:

Is it possible to port some of these improvements to ankimini?

iAnki update - Nii87 - 2009-07-16

Wow! Lots of quick updates! Actual useful changes too. Nice to see iAnki getting some love. AnkiMini just doesn't do it for me =P

Which ones in particular?

iAnki update - Jarvik7 - 2009-07-16

I haven't checked out the new stylesheet, but the furigana support is what caught my eye.

iAnki update - b0ng0 - 2009-07-16

Is iAnki still limited to syncing with decks of 1000 cards max? Because that was what stopped me using it, as my deck is over 1000.

iAnki update - Nii87 - 2009-07-16

^I'm not sure. My deck is over 1000 as well, but I sync it every evening after I get home from work. Works fine for me.

Also, you can set the number of cards to be synced.
