日本語 twittering - nest0r - 2009-07-05 So what Japanese-language Twitter accounts do you follow? 日本語 twittering - kazelee - 2009-07-05 What's with the sudden rise in twittering. Until the conflict in Iran, I rarely heard the word. Now it's everywhere. What is Twitter? 日本語 twittering - nest0r - 2009-07-05 Twitter, like other tumblelogs/microblogs, is useful for Japanese-learning, in my opinion (I originally used Japanese tumblr sites as per my 'time hacks' thread). I'm too old school to invest time in mocking another social networking site, however, so I'm afraid I can't join you there. I had my fun mocking MySpace and Facebook a few years ago, now I'm spent. 日本語 twittering - drivers99 - 2009-07-05 Watch this. But I don't think it will make sense until you get on and try it for yourself. I follow bunch of people who are doing RTK and learning Japanese (there's another thread on this forum listing people from here who are on twitter), as well as some people who live in the same town I live in, and a few friends. 日本語 twittering - Jarvik7 - 2009-07-05 I don't use twitter at all and don't understand why anyone else does. Most people are far too boring/normal to want to monitor their every action. "You're eating popcorn right now? REALLLLYYYYY?" 日本語 twittering - Burritolingus - 2009-07-06 Jarvik7 Wrote:I don't use twitter at all and don't understand why anyone else does. Most people are far too boring/normal to want to monitor their every action.I understand the sentiment, and I shared it for a looong time before actually trying it for a while. As far as I could tell, it fell into the same category as Myspace/Facebook/et al, and I wanted no part of it. However, I've really grown accustomed to it after I found the goodies. Yeah, 98% of Twitter is banal garbage, but it has some legitimately useful applications as well. I follow a number of sites that tweet about updates and during downtime, something RSS can't always offer, especially not as promptly as Twitter. And of course, many of the users (such as the Reviewing the Kanji crew) are actually interesting and helpful to follow - it's far easier to fire off a quick question in Twitter than it is to post an entirely new forum thread, for instance, and I've gotten a lot of good recommendations on dramas and animu. And then, of course, on the other side of spectrum, there's this. http://tweetingtoohard.com/ These people should be banned from the Internet and/or made dead. I read through this site whenever I'm feeling too cheery and need a little something to remind me what planet I'm really on. Oh yeah, and on topic... now that I think about it, the only Japanese Twitter account (singular Twitter user: twat. Just FYI.) I follow at the moment is SmartFmJapan. None of the Japanese blogs and news sites I read regularly use Twitter, as far as I know. I'd definitely be interested in finding 日本語 twittering - wrightak - 2009-07-06 Twitter didn't market itself very well with the phrase "What are you doing?" In my opinion, the alternatives of "What's on your mind?", "What are you thinking?" etc. aren't much better I like Twitter when you get some good banter. Good jokes, funny links, interesting topics etc. Finding interesting people to follow is tricky though. I've got a load of Japanese twitterers that I'm following. Some of them are quite good but no one I'd really want to recommend so far. 日本語 twittering - Sebastian - 2009-07-06 It isn't hard to find Japanese Twitter users. Just use the search tool and input something in Japanese (even a single kana can make it) and voilà. Of course, some of the users you¡ll find will be Japanese learning foreigners, but you can always unfollow people that are of no interest to you. If you aren't into "that twitter thing", you can always follow Twitter users via their rss feeds, and get all their tweets without even signing up for Twitter. 日本語 twittering - bodhisamaya - 2009-07-06 I don't understand the attention Twitter is getting either. Smart.fm shows Twitter comments on their International page and I skim through them sometimes. It's always teenage-girl like chatter with little of substance. Why is the media pushing this? It makes no sense. 日本語 twittering - kazelee - 2009-07-06 bodhisamaya Wrote:Why is the media pushing this? It makes no sense.Maybe, because all the other stuff has passed the sensational expiration date. 日本語 twittering - nest0r - 2009-07-06 I find that the microblog format allows for entries that are easily digested and designed to be contained, which I think works well not only for finding a certain kind of Japanese input, but I think it's a fine platform to begin practicing output in a 'natural' setting. 日本語 twittering - Squintox - 2009-07-06 Why is that people point out the negatives of a service rather than the positives? I think if you get passed all the complaining you might see its usefulness... 日本語 twittering - bodhisamaya - 2009-07-06 China is blocking their own version of Twitter due to the rioting going on: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090706/ap_on_re_as/as_china_protest_19 "Internet access was blocked or unusually slow in Urumqi on Monday. Videos and text updates about the riots were removed from China-based social networking sites such as Youku, a YouTube-like video service, and Fanfou, a Chinese micro-blogging Web site similar to Twitter." 日本語 twittering - Musashi - 2009-07-06 bodhisamaya Wrote:China is blocking their own version of Twitter due to the rioting going on:*cringe I don't get why even the design has the same blue as Twitter! If you copy at least try to make it look like it's not copied. Talking about copied, you guys ever saw a chinese fake iPhone infomercial on TV? Cringe to the max! I had to pick up my jaw when I saw it on TV for the first time. Can't believe they're allowed to show it on national TV! :O (they even copied the Apple logo ahaha) It is hilarious though. One of my roommates even bought one, gosh, I've never seen such a bad pirated product ever. 日本語 twittering - vosmiura - 2009-07-06 A few days of messages like "I'm leaving for work now." "I'm at work now" "2 more hours until the end of day now" "1 more hour to go now" "I'm back at home now" Is enough to put me off this sheez. 日本語 twittering - nest0r - 2009-07-06 vosmiura Wrote:A few days of messages likeFor real. 日本語 twittering - cjswanson1355 - 2009-07-06 I have to deal with enough boring small talk at work! You want me to sign up for it now!? I really don't get what the big deal is. 日本語 twittering - nest0r - 2009-07-06 Are all of these replies part of some elaborate prank? I don't get it. 日本語 twittering - Mcjon01 - 2009-07-06 For people who don't get what the big deal about Twitter is, take a look at this article: Twitter To Start Indexing Links For Search The draw of Twitter is less about people's second-to-second thoughts, and more about its ability to generate self-moderated real-time aggregate data. At least, that's why I think it's cool. I don't actually follow anyone... 日本語 twittering - Burritolingus - 2009-07-06 No one is forcing anyone to follow Joe Shmoe or The Crazy Cat Lady or Camwhore Sue, so I really don't see what the inherent problem with Twitter is. You have a choice whether or not to slog through water cooler banality and white noise - just follow whoever interests you, unfollow those who get on your nerves. Pretty simple concept, really. When you're watching TV, do you suffer through bottom of the barrel Reality TV Show #3842 or do the sensible thing and - gasp - change the channel? When you're flipping through radio stations and come upon some twangy country western song or east-coast gangsta rap or what have you (not that there's anything wrong with either, mind you), the same deal applies here, as it does to Twitter - don't like it, change it. The noise to signal ratio on practically everything in life is quite high, but it only takes a little bit of effort and digging to get a good, clear signal. I'll direct you to Sturgeon's Law for further information, but you probably get the idea. So much for staying on topic, I guess. 日本語 twittering - vosmiura - 2009-07-06 nest0r Wrote:Sorry if I hit a nerve, but it was just my experience which is why I'm not into it.vosmiura Wrote:A few days of messages likeFor real. I don't dislike forums & blogs in general, but I don't like the idea of reading lots of status messages (as per Twitter) in general, I prefer forms that are more discussion style. I like the graph of "The Twitter Curve" on this blog. On another note: The time it takes you to find the remote you could have already just turned the knob on the older TVs. Guess today that'd be a huge friggin knob, huh? 日本語 twittering - Burritolingus - 2009-07-07 kazelee Wrote:On another note: The time it takes you to find the remote you could have already just turned the knob on the older TVs. Guess today that'd be a huge friggin knob, huh?I know, right? Everything seems to be making the transition to knobless, even buttonless in favor of fancy digital, but dagnabbit, maybe I want to turn knobs on my microwave and have actual tactile feedback on my phone vidya games rather than fumbling around on an awkward touch screen! Back in my day, I had a junker hand-me-down TV that eventually required me to turn the dial at juuust right angle for a few seconds in order for it to turn on. Try doing that with a row of fancy buttons, whippersnapers! I also hold an automatic prejudice toward social networking sites in general and a good percentage of modern video games. Hiding behind a rock for 5 seconds to heal fully, seriously, what kind of BS gameplay mechanic is that. Ain't being a jaded 20-something grand? 日本語 twittering - nest0r - 2009-07-11 In case anyone's interested: http://politter.com/ - 'twitter and Japanese politics' Here's another: http://twitterpoli.com/ 日本語 twittering - Nukemarine - 2009-07-11 nest0r, thanks for that link. To be honest, the twitters I like best are those that have interesting links or interesting quotes or interesting insights. Probably the reason I don't "tweet" much is I don't offer the above. |
