Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - paasan - 2011-07-03 Ah, I just recently finished adding all the cards in Core 6k to my deck. Yay! Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - ta12121 - 2011-07-03 I've been able to gain the necessary vocab(passive and both active in terms of reading). To read mangas, novels and newspapers to a high degree. I also love the fact that: games, movies, songs(lyrics if needed) have gotten easy. I guess it really does come down to putting in the time. I've learned all one needs is a huge interest to learn, put in the time and crave that goal of becoming fluent or native-level fluent. A lot of people have suggested that, if you really want to improve skills that are lacking(whether it be for speaking, writing or reading or listening). The best way is to just jump the gun. Over time it will be easy. Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - Splatted - 2011-07-13 I finished my first light novel last night!! Zero no Tsukaima. It took me about five days, and has really made a difference to my Japanese. Near the end I read two volumes of Nurarihyon no Mago and it felt like a nice relaxing break! Shounen manga was almost too difficult for me a little while ago. I also got my hands on a hard copy of Yotsubato, which I've read before but didn't really like. I don't really like re-reading the things did like, so I expected this to be pretty boring, but I decided to have little read of it while my pasta was cooking and it was really funny! I guess even though I understood it before, my reading just wasn't fluent enough to enjoy it. Good thing I forgot to turn the ring on or I'd have ruined my tea. The icing on the cake was this morning when I decided to have a go a reading Deadman Wonderland, which I'd given up on as too difficult a little while. If anyone has any idea what was difficult about it, please tell me. ![]() I think the reason this had such a big impact on my Japanese is that I read for hours each day and completed it in only a few days. I'd already read more than half of Kino no Tabi volume 1, but that had taken me months. Most days I wouldn't read anything at all, and even when I did I'd stop pretty soon, sometimes after only one sentence. ![]() For anyone who's wierd and obsessive like me, I thought I'd share this site with you. It tracks the number of books and pages (no word count, unfortunately) you've read. A large part of why I've done so much reading recently is that I really wanted to add more things to my read list. Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - mezbup - 2011-07-13 Congrats on making a big step in the world of Japanese! Keep reading and thanks for the link! I can tell ima get a lot of use out of it too! It has to do with 達成感 I think? Iunno... just something about seeing numbers climb really motivates some people! Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - Lazerbeat - 2011-07-13 Just started the epic lesson 23. I have been looking forward to this for a while! Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - Tzadeck - 2011-07-13 Recently I found that I'm much better at making my point in Japanese--and I'm much better at yelling at people when I feel like yelling at them, haha. I'm not sure if that's good personality wise, but it does signify a step up in language ability. The case in point--I've had a small minor skin rash for about seven months now, and I went to the doctor about it four or five times. In fact, I tried two different doctors. They kept giving me this silly cream, but the rash never fully healed. Despite the fact that, supposedly, with treatment this type of rash is supposed to go away in 3-5 days. Now, from the internet, I KNOW that there are oral medications you can use for that type of rash. They are often used in situations where the rash won't easily heal. So, earlier this week I went back to my doctor and asked if there was any other medicine I could use. He said that no matter where you go, you'll probably end up getting this cream. And I said, hey, I KNOW there is 飲み薬 for this. He replied that it would be overkill (やりすぎ), to which I complained a while that it hadn't gone away after seven months, etc. etc., and essentially yelled at him a bit. Anyway, after a while finally he gave me the damn medicine. And the rash is finally gone, after like three days, haha. Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - Splatted - 2011-07-14 @pudding cat/mezbup: Thanks/your welcome. I just re-read my post, seems I was a bit over excited. lol Do you think I was actually typing or just banging on the keyboard in some abstract expression of my emotions inspired by the music of Christian Wolf? @Tzadeck: Congrats.
Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - thurd - 2011-07-14 Recently I: * reached 8500 vocab * reached 2000 known kanji * started reading more with help from Yomichan (I literally see I'm making progress every day) * finally finished my Android app for Japanese conjugations * decided to go to Japan with only one 7day rail pass, it will be a hectic week but if I find something I really like I can always go back on a regular ticket * started 100 words/day and stopped after around 10 days but still managed to learn a few new things * changed my SRS routine to show shortest interval cards first (those I haven't learned well yet) so I'm fresh and ready to learn new stuff rather than at the end when I'm a little worn up * changed my SRS to show my most recently added cards first so that I can work on what I've seen in the wild (thx Yomichan) and only after that resort to lists (I've added 3k+ common words a while back) Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - mezbup - 2011-07-15 Finished reading an entire book in under a week for the first time! 東大生が選んだ勉強法, Seriously worth a read and only about 200 pages long. Finished it in 4 days I'd say. In the whole 200 pages there was about 10 words I had to look up... very happy with that result. Though, it was an easy read in comparison to a novel I guess but that's not to say it's a piece of cake either! Anyways, It's the first time I've had a true taste of fluency whilst reading something quite substantial. I'm hungry for more
Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - adoette - 2011-07-17 Did the math and realized I have less than 200 stories left to write. Since that's the slowest part of my RtK, I'm finally in the home stretch. I'll be seeing you in the 3/4s thread very soon!! Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - Rina - 2011-07-18 finished adding 2kyuu vocab from a list! Also, I finished adding the sentences from somatome grammar 2kyuu. I reached 6393 sentences, 545 unseen I'm already quite familiar with most of the 2kyuu grammar since I've been studying it since past December. Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - jonuhey - 2011-07-23 Just passed past lesson 23 which was a huge wall for me during my first attempt (http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?pid=113268#pid113268), mostly because I was very busy by that time and with no time to review, it was growing and growing to a monster that I never was able to beat anymore. This time Im studying on Anki and using direct translated Keywords (to portuguese) as I found that even with my reasonably good english I would still look to the front of the card and first try to remember what the hell that thing was, cuz without no context its kinda hard to guess not so common words in a foreign language. This time its going much more smoothly, I'm writing my own stories always, except when I really fail at doing them or if I really cant remember them after 2-3 tries then I come to this site and take a story that will work with my keyword in portuguese too. Am current on vacation from work/college/japanese class and am free to add 20 to 70 new cards everyday, depending on if I could finish my reviews for that day and how many will be for the next days (anki graphs really help at planning this). I kinda want to post next week on the half way thread, and this time I wont be "dreaming" as I was in that other thread I linked. Anyway, its just a mini milestone compared to others, but RTK looks much more like something that I can achieve soon, now that I finished this lesson.
Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - WolfOfCampscapel - 2011-07-23 Milestone? Visited Japan. For the first time, for weeks, and alone. Found what nice big holes there are in my Japanese. Understood the weather forecast and some kiddie tv, train announcements. Got to know random new people and visit them at their homes. Lots of practice speaking. There'll be more visits. No doubt there.

Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - jettyke - 2011-07-29 Finished my first Novel in Japanese. (approx. 250pages) Took me about 50 days from starting til finishing...lazy ![]() ![]() First half of the book I read the paper version without the dictionary, the second half I switched to reading it through yomi-chan and I must say it's much more effective for understanding and increasing vocab knowledge. I learned a lot of new words thanks to yomi-chan. It's supposed to have 1576 kanji, so now I know about how difficult novels I can read. Must say it was quite difficult, at times very addictive and interesting, at times boring. Well I hope to pick up a slightly easier novel next time and enjoy it even more than I enjoyed this book. I know I have a long way to go still, but now I'm on #115, so I know I must be doing something right :) Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - howtwosavealif3 - 2011-07-31 oh but you know the best part of that site is you can find people with good aishou and then find more books you're likely to like. you know it's hard to find good books whether it's in english or japanese so I will totally add all my crap and find someone with good comptability. I don't really care about page numbers... I care about reading good books.. I think khatz said reading 200 boks = fluent but I'm gonna aim for 200 books I like that I read and I want to try to avoid reading books I don't like. i guess for compatibilty's sakes I should only add books I finished reading and LIKED otherwise I'm not gonna get good comptability. there's certain books I finished reading and then i regretted reading it cause it wasnt that great. but then agian I should've just gave up on it earlier. speaking of compatability I actually asked a question on chiebukuro saying oh these are my favorite authors, give me recommendations. after I submited it I realized somebody else already asked a simlar question with the same authors. So I thought that that was interesting. q my milestone achievement is recently I gave up on reading 2 books and the book I tried to read after that was much better... way more interesting. there's lots of japanese books out there but only read the ones you acutally like. but for those 2, the first one I read the first 80 pages or something? and then 2nd one is 30 pages. The second might be worth re-trying, hell no with the first one. anyways they are respectively 死国、太陽がイッパイイッパイ Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - chair - 2011-07-31 chair Wrote:After looking around the site for a bit I found links to other similar sites:Splatted Wrote:For anyone who's wierd and obsessive like me, I thought I'd share this site with you. Movies/TV - http://video.akahoshitakuya.com/ Games - http://gamemeter.net/ Music - http://ongakumeter.com/ Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - Hallivor - 2011-07-31 I realized I can actually read novels in Japanese, very cool! Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - adoette - 2011-08-04 It's a little one, but my RtK helped me to read some Japanese I located in the wild. I was walking by Bestway and they had a Sony stereo out front with a sticker that said 無敵 on it in bad handwriting/calligraphy. Someone noticed me looking and asked if I knew what it said. I told them o meant something like no enemy or rival. According to my dictionary, I was right! Unrivaled or invincible. Finally, RtK pays dividends beyond the normal. Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - mezbup - 2011-08-07 I just finished reading いま、会いにゆきます、!!! This is one of my greatest achievements to date. Not because it's amazing or anything but because of how amazed I feel to have been able to read such a beautiful story in it's original language. It's the fastest ive read a novel (bout a week and a half), but then again it was an easy read. Highly recommended as a first novel to read in Japanese if ur thinking about taking that leap In ur journey. I'm just so grateful for the ways in which this language has enriched my life. Another huge milestone I'm happy to celebrate this month Is sticking It out through thick and thin to learn this language every day for 3 whole years! What an amazing, positive impact it's had on my life. To all those who are in the early stages and struggling - don't ever stop. Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - thurd - 2011-08-12 I recently read a lot about L-R and exposure in general, so I decided to supplement my reading efforts with audio and frankly just try L-R for a while. I remember a few months ago I've tried to listen to 1st Harry Potter audiobook and it was way too fast and not really what I'd call understandable (just bits and pieces really). But this time I decided to persevere and plough through no matter what, so I turned it on and it was like a whole different recording. I don't understand it perfectly but knowing the underlying story allows me to follow the plot without problem except for some sentences where there's just too much unknown/untrained vocab, the voice also seems to be slower than previously. The thing is I don't remember doing anything special lately for my listening abilities, sure a lot has changed: stopped SRSing, read more, been in Japan for two weeks now (actually its not that earth shattering in terms of language learning) but nothing that could explain this sudden spike in comprehension. |
