Haha, you should see how much a single cow is worth! Considering the price per pound (~$150 USD), I wasn't especially surprised. It's considered the finest beef in the world, so it's certainly not going to be cheap. Plus, I feel like we definitely had a better deal than those $500/plate restaurants in LA/NY.

Today I reached Heisig# 1000 付 - adhere. I guess I really ought to qualify that. I'm using RtK Fifth Edition without the recent supplement Wink I started in October 2009 and I'm going at this at a leisurely pace.

After 2 weeks of reviewing, I am finally back to learning new kanji (I am on 1729). I have reached 1444 into 4+ box!!!!! I am so close to 1500 kanji being in my long term memory XD!

Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - Tefhel - 2010-07-04

I've done the first 500 kanji - it's not much but I'm pleased all the same, I started last Saturday. I'm aiming for 100 a day (and to finish by the end of the month) since I have literally nothing else to do (but missed a few days because of being busy, kept reviewing though). I'm sure this is only the beginning Smile It's cool suddenly being able to recognise the characters you've learnt and seeing them everywhere you look. I'm at least JLPT3 level (grammar/writing/listening wise) so learning the kanji all at once is really opening a lot of doors - and I think when I'm through with RTK I'll really take off since I'm not having to start from scratch and learn what a particle is.

Woot Just finished reading my first novel in Japanese! - learned 1K new vocab from it Tongue only 700 more to til 10K!

Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - vileru - 2010-07-10

@mezbup

How long did it take you to get to 10K vocab? I seems like it was just a few months ago that you started using vocab cards!

In addition, which novel did you read and how long did it take? Would you recommend it to others?

I started to look up Korean vocabulary in a monolingual dictionary. Feel like getting rid of your training wheels somehow. Smile

I think I'm on my 10th japanese book or something but i've never learned that many words from a book. Most I got was like 300 or 400 something words. but that was from a 500 something page book which was also my first my book i read in Japanese. Plus I thought it was difficult just in general (compared to other books). Plus it was a bad book Sad even though it got some #1 mystery recognition from somewhere.

But then i read a lot of internet/dramascripts/etc before going to actual books.

but like AJATT says, only mine the stuff you REALLY want so I didn't mine everything but I still think I mined too much from that first book so I've probably ended up suspending a bunch of those anyway...

My vocab deck right now is 2500 cards but i used to have an old deck that had a lot of stuff that got lost so i have no idea. i just know it's 2500 + x

I've just reached 6000 seen cards in my mostly-sentences-but-also-some-isolated-vocab deck with almost 1000 new cards since the beginning of June. Now that I'm unemployed again, I'll be able to increase the rhythm and finally make some progress.

I'm now using smart.fm 6k with anki importer as my main source and since there are a lot of easy sentences I can go faster.

As far as understanding goes, it's still not that great. A single chapter of the manga Bakuman still has dozens of unknown words. I need a lot more vocabulary.

Oh and I'm totally jealous of all the 10k+ guys...

Just take your time, slowly but surely you will reach 10K in vocab. Once you reach 15,000 vocab you will start noticing that you can understand/read a majority of the text you see in japanese.

I went up a level! Instead of 上手ですね, Japanese people are now describing my Japanese as とても上手!

or wait... would that actually mean I went down a level?... :/

Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - thurd - 2010-07-16

Recently achieved:

1. Finished Core 6000 vocab list, only JLPT2 left before I stop adding words from lists (meaning much more time for other stuff)
2. My listening comprehension got a lot better recently but I really don't know why, since I didn't change anything in my methods or pace
3. I've found that its a lot easier for me to remember a word if I encounter it in the wild (ie. not my vocab deck), so I'm actually doing better than my deck stats would suggest

WOHO!!!!!

10000 BABY!

My deck now contains 10k + cards (9500+ sentences, 600+ vocab)!
I love the fact that on the first page of this thread I'm halfway through RTK1, and now I can see how far I've come.
I decided a year ago to learn 10k+ words and then move to Japan for a while.
I've now reached both of my goals - 10k+ cards and a one-way ticket to 大阪 the 7th of September. Yay!

Now if you excuse me, I'm off for some serious sushi eating...! Big Grin

Congratulations! A few months over a year of studying and you've already completed RTK1 and 10k cards. I started in July last year, but I only have around 2,000 cards even though I'm just a few months behind you. Well done and bravo!

Thank you very much! =)
Well, truth be told, Japanese is THE thing I've been doing this year, so if I had other commitments (school, full-time work etc) I wouldn't have been able to do it.
I have to drop down on adding cards when I go to Japan, but I'll continue my pace until then =)

I wish I could do the same! I'm on summer break from university right now, yet my time for focused study is limited due to about 20 hrs/week of part-time work and, ironically, my Japanese friends and my Japanese gf occupying my time. However, I figure this must be a beneficial for my listening since I hear conversations spoken by natives at natural speeds for several hours on a daily basis, even if they insist on speaking English with me.

Anyway, would you mind sharing what your level of reading is after 10k cards? I only have 700 cards left in Core2k, and I have half of Tae Kim's special expressions and all of the advanced topics left to complete, but even the simplest of reading materials are still intimidating. If you could help me get an idea of how much effort is needed to attain a certain level of reading, then I'd get a clearer picture of what I need to do to reach my goals. Any feedback you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

On the topic of recent milestone achievements, there was a birthday party last night. A drunk Japanese man insisted on using Japanese. I was at the cusp of drunkenness. Yet, I defied the cup. Yes, I heard ... I understood ... I replied. The idols had been smashed. The people had been freed. A golden age had dawned upon the land.

WOOT! Finally reached this years mid term goal of 10K vocab! Feels good.

Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - wulfgar - 2010-07-31

I really happy on the fact that I am keeping up with my kanji reveiws after finishing RTK because I am taking BIOCHEM 2 during the summer which is a really stupidly hard course for my Pre-med degree XD! And also I have 1685 kanji in my 4+ boxes = long term memory XD!

Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - inertia - 2010-08-02

I rented an apartment! Smile It was difficult sometimes, I know my grammar wasn't as clean or polite as it could have been, and there were a lot of times when I had to ask the real estate agents to explain or rephrase things. But they don't speak English so it was all in Japanese, and I got through the whole thing. Back in July I took the JLPT N3 and I feel like getting the apartment was a much harder test. I think I probably passed N3, but even if I failed, I've got a lovely new home as a consolation prize.

Also, I'm about 5/6 of the way through an abridged version of "The Count of Monte Christo" written for upper elementary school students. It's going slower now that I have to pack but I'll probably finish it in the next few days anyway. It's my first full-length book and even if it's a children's version, it's still 350 pages of material meant for native speakers. I got a lot of useful vocabulary from it and became a little better at processing long sentences. The next book on my list is 魔女の宅急便 ("Kiki's Delivery Service") which is more difficult for me because it's not a translation from a Western language and I've never read it in English. But there seems to be a graceful flow to the writing that I haven't seen in translations into Japanese, so I'm looking forward to it.

Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here - thurd - 2010-08-09

Finally finished adding new words from JLPT2 list!!!! I also reached 6800 vocab and 1800 unique kanji. All in a record breaking 208 days or 6 months, 27 days Wink

Recently I also passed a practice JLPT3 test with almost no targeted grammar/listening/reading study, just normal SRS on vocab I added like 3-4 months ago (89/100 for vocab section).

Now that I have the basics, I can finally focus on normal things like grammar, reading/understanding and listening. No more excuses now.

ah I have to take a biochem course next semester for my pre-med degree -.- so I'm going all out with japanese study at the moment, which is kind of detrimenting my uni studies at the moment... there's always midsemester break to catch up i guess.

Good luck with your bio-chem course, Biochem 1 (the theory part) is pretty easy but the 2nd part (metabolic mechanisms) is a pain (and thats an understatement!). I really would recommend at least maintaining your reveiws because I have been doing that with bio-chem 2 and it has been working out very good. Don't ever just "stop", do a little a day and it will allow you to get where you want to go with japanese XD.
