Roku TV Japanese Channels - haplology - 2012-07-28

Does anyone know if there are any Japanese language channels on the Roku TV? I'd much rather watch on my TV than on my computer, but the only thing I was able to find is NHK English (private channel) which is kinda useless. Would love to get some news channel or something like that - not just Anime or whatever.

I know I'm bumping an old post, but I want to know about this, too. I just got a Roku 3 today, and I can't find much in the way of streaming Japanese language TV. (Which I find kind of ironic, since the device is called "Roku.")

About the only thing I can find besides anime is NHK World, which is in English.

I noticed that the former wist.tv is now called dya.tv, and supports the Chromecast and Apple TV... if you stream from your browser to the dongle/box... but there doesn't seem to be any native support for any of the streaming boxes.

And TV-Japan is cable/satellite only.

I can get all kinds of channels in languages I never knew existed... except Japanese.

Oh, there was one exception, but it's essentially Japanese TV with Chinese subs, with low bit rate.

I get the feeling that I'm going to have to wait 4-5 years or so on this one, just like everything else. -_-

Both Netflix and Crunchyroll have some minimal Japanese content, but nothing to write home about. The YouTube app is new on Roku, if you can find something you like. The search interface is pathetic, but you can connect the Roku version to the YouTube app on your smartphone or tablet, do your search via mobile, and tell it to play it on the Roku. It's pretty convenient.

Yeah, I messed around with the YouTube app last night. It's not bad. It's a lot better than the unofficial JustinTV app, which always returns the same 20 channels, no matter what search terms I use.

Crunchyroll isn't too bad. At least it's subbed, and the free version is still free.

I already use TuneIn for streaming a few Japanese community radio stations, but the Roku version won't play most of those streams, because they're WMF streams.

Also, the Japanesepod101.com people have an app for it, but it's $1/month, and I have no idea what kind of content is going to be on that channel.

I was kind of hoping that there would be a way to use something like KeyholeTV on this. I may just wind up getting a Chromecast for my last unused HDMI port and trying out Dya and its 7 Tokyo OTA channels. It's not perfect, because by cutting the cord I'd lose my DVR, but I'd save a big pile of money.
