does iAnki only support 5 decks at once? how can i get more on my iAnki on my touch?

Hi there,

I've been checking several posts but cannot find a clear step by step way to install iAnki on my iPod touch. I'd appreciate any help. Went to the anki website but the explanations don't make too much sense to me. Basically I just want the basic Heisig deck, no extra deck, bells or whistles.
It's the For Dummies version I'm looking for.
BTW, I'm so glad I sold that awful Windows Mobile machine, everything so tiny and unnecessarily complicated.

The steps below worked for me on Win XP SP2 to iTouch 2nd Gen.

The only problem I ever had was when there was a firewall on the local network. Disabling the firewall did the trick.

iAnki seems very robust, I synch and use it every day.

1. In Anki

o Go to the Anki menu "Settings>Plugins>Open Plugins Folder".

o Extract the iAnki zip file to your plugins folder

- The 'iAnki Server' item will now be added to Anki's 'Plugins' menu

o Click 'iAnki Server' (in the Anki 'Plugins' menu) to run (the 'iAnki Server' box should display)

o Verify your IP address (Start > Run > "cmd" > "ipconfig") - keep the window open or copy it down

o Set the Anki Server address to the IP address of your network adapter (from step above)

o Port: Set this to the port that the server will 'listen' on (default 8000)

o Max Cards: Set to 500 (or anything from 1 to 1000)

o Days of Reviews: Set to 4 (anything from 1 to 4)

2. iTouch

o Connect device to WiFi

o Open Safari

o Browse to http://<address>:8000

- the field <address> (above) is the IP address of the computer that you have Anki running on ie the same IP address from above
- fictional example of URL: <http://186.123.4.6:8000>

o Click through the link on the page that displays "Bookmark the following link iAnki (0.2.1)".

o The iAnki web page should load

o Bookmark this page in your browser (select 'Add to Home Screen' option).

You *must* have an Anki deck open in Anki when you synch over to iAnki or you'll get error messages. I guess you just have to go to File > Download in Anki to get the Heisig deck you mentioned.

Can I just clarify the differences between iAnki and AnkiMini:

iAnki is:
a client app, that will work on a non-jailbroken iphone or ipod touch, which syncs with an online master deck(s) when your connected but allows you to do reviews (and add new card?) while offline

AnkiMini:
is essentially a stand alone app, that requires a jailbroken iphone or touch, can sync with an online deck if required but is really for working offline

I'm buying an iPod Touch 3.0 and would like to understand which will work best for me.

Thanks
CJ

I've used iAnki for a few hours. And discarded it. It was just not worth it. Felt painful to me. I'd go with AnkiMini any time.

iAnki vs Anki Mini - vosmiura - 2009-11-19

@cjane

AnkiMini is essentially the full Anki client and can do most of what the full Anki can except adding & editing cards. It's built from the same code that Anki is. It can hold all your decks on the iPhone, sync with Anki's online server, and it can show cards with media.

iAnki is a web app with scripts that run inside the web browser (Safari). It lets you review your decks offline, and sync to Anki when you're online. It can't currently handle media. It's only plusses as it were are working on non-Jailbroken iPhones (and other devices like Android phones), it can be a little faster to review than AnkiMini, and I think it has some formatting enhancements.

Web apps are quite restricted in what they can do, and Safari also has some bugs/quirks. iAnki is full of hacks to let it do what it does, but as such it is relatively complex to install and sync for non-experts. Once you learn how to use it, its quite painless to use on a regular basis.

Most people would probably find AnkiMini to be the best experience especially if you use media, but without a Jailbreak its not an option.

Thanks vosmiura.

I'll give iAnki a try but I think I'd prefer to use miniAnki to make use of the media I have. Bit nervous about jailbreaking though. Been reading about only tethered jailbreaks available for iPod Touch 3g (from blackra1n) and also greenpois0n working on a version. Can anyone recommend a method/app to use. Also can it be undone, ie can you go back to a non-jailbroken version? There seem to be a number of worms out there infecting jailbroken iPhones! And does it invalidate your warranty?

CJ

iAnki vs Anki Mini - Jarvik7 - 2009-11-23

All jailbreaks are undoable with a simple restore from itunes.
There are no worms that affect jailbroken iphones/ipods, only a worm that affects an ipod/iphone that has been jailbroken, had openssh installed, and has the default passwords set. It's more of an openssh "exploit" than a jailbroken iphone exploit. Although it's actually not an exploit at all, just something that guesses passwords.

I can't recommend a method since I'm on an early model iPhone 3GS, which doesn't have the extra protection as on newer 3GS or the ipod touch 3g.

Bumping this..

I'm thinking about buying an iPod touch, since my "portable" netbook doesn't fit in my pocket. (The Pandora looks tempting, but I'm impatient and not that rich atm.)
Anyway, I have a LOT of media (picture + 1-3 mp3 files per card) and a lot of cards (6K give or take) in my deck.
Can I make that work with Ankimini?
I've heard there's no furigana support - what will happen to the answer side of my cards? Will I see the readings as, f.ex: 勉強(べんきょう), or something like that, or am I pretty much screwed? =)

iAnki vs Anki Mini - Tobberoth - 2009-12-27

Yeah, you will see it as it looks like on the cards when you're editing them. You can use the hack I made a few weeks ago to create only-kana cards if you want that.

I don't think ankimini cares about how big your deck is and how much media it contains. As long as your ipod touch is big enough, it should be alright.

What about iAnki application for iphone? the one for $2.99? Anyone tried it? I am not sure if you can sync the decks from your desktop to this one. http://ianki.com/

That's not related to Anki at all.

iAnki is a memorization tool developed for the iPhone and iPod Touch that incorporates the "Ikegaya Mnemonic" method, developed by Associate Professor Ikegaya Yuuji of Tokyo University.
It is useful for overcoming poor memory to learn new vocabulary.

iAnki vs Anki Mini - tinonet - 2009-12-29

Thanks for explanation! The name is definitely confusing. I do not want to jailbreak my iphone (in the view of the latest exploits) for the real anki to install... so no cigar Sad

iAnki vs Anki Mini - Jarvik7 - 2009-12-29

The exploits have nothing to do with jailbreaking. The exploit is for openssh which can only be installed (manually) if you have jailbroken your ipod/iphone, not in the jailbreak itself. Even then it can only be exploited if you don't bother changing the default password. The media's reporting of the exploit has been astoundingly poor.

iAnki vs Anki Mini - tinonet - 2009-12-29

There is a third option: AnkiOnline.

As for the exploit, I never bothered to research what was exploited as I never planned to jailbreak. It is good to know that changing default ssh password will prevent this from happening. I would change it anyway if I would to install openssh, so I guess it would take care of it without even me knowing Smile

But you got me interested, I guess I will research further what can I do with jailbroken device... (besides anki, which is a good reason on its own though)

I'm just putting this out there

AndroidAnki sucks. All there is is "Remembered" "Not Remembered"

Kills any motivation to study

iAnki vs Anki Mini - Nii87 - 2010-01-04

Tent5, that's really disappointing. I was hoping to get an Android phone soonish =(

The development version has experimental SRS support.

I am after this indeed... do you know if this is still the case?
As am I.

I have been trying to use DiskAid to move my media files to the var/mobile/.anki folder, as Richard Colley suggested*, but, as was mentioned earlier, the folder is hidden. Has anyone been successful in using media (specifically mp3s) with Anki Mini on a jailbroken iTouch running 3.1.2?

iAnki vs Anki Mini - Jarvik7 - 2010-01-05

I was under the impression that playing was fixed...

iAnki vs Anki Mini - TanukiTambourine - 2010-01-05

Success! I can use media with my Anki Mini deck on my iTouch. I used PhoneView to SSH the media files over USB, and downloaded the deck from Anki Online.

My method, if anyone needs it:

Anki Mini (with media) on iTouch

1. upgrade to 3.1.2 firmware
2. jailbreak with blackra1n
(NB: must use blackra1n via USB every time you reset the iTouch!)
3. download Cydia on iTouch
4. change root and mobile passwords (or you may be hacked!)
5. download Anki Mini from Cydia store
6. download afc2add from Cydia store (enables USB SSH transfer)
7. use PhoneView (free trial) to transfer media folders to var/mobile/.anki under the root partition
8. set up AnkiOnline account
9. sync decks with AnkiOnline
10. download decks onto iTouch

Voila!

PS: The particulars on performing each of these steps can be found via Google!

TanukiTambourine Wrote:1. upgrade to 3.1.2 firmware

blackra1n sucks. Its only merit is that it works on 3rd generation ipod touch and new bootrom iphone 3gs. Pwnagetool not only doesn't require a tether on supported models, it also doesn't update the baseband on iphones, so you can retain carrier unlockability (even if you don't unlock, being unlockable increases resell value).

iAnki vs Anki Mini - Dixon - 2010-05-02

I would really like to use AnkiMini and hope it will be released in the AppStore. Are there plans to work on getting that done? In the face of the illegality and immorality of jailbreaking, it would be helpful for all of us who don't want to go down that same road to have the same access to the program.

Until then, I can continue using iAnki but only when I have access to the internet, not on the subway or whatever. Does anyone have any recommendations on flashcard app software, possibly using the Leitner system or something, available in the App Store for free or a good price?

Dixon Wrote:immorality of jailbreaking
If it wasn't for Apple's insatiable greed, developers wouldn't be shafted, the app store wouldn't suck and people wouldn't need to jailbreak. I hardly feel like a heathen for doing it.

iAnki vs Anki Mini - Dixon - 2010-05-02

I fail to see why people "need" to violate copyright. Without Apple's "greed" you would have absolutely nothing, no iPod Touch and no iPhone. I'm pretty sure they opened a business to make money, and you are not entitled to everything simply because you feel like it.
