Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - cjane - 2010-05-27 Good to see it's available, making my purchase right now! But where are all your rave reviews and ratings, I expected to see some by now! CJ Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - Tobberoth - 2010-05-27 Good to hear it's out, hope a lot of people buy it. Personally, I won't. It's not just that my ipod touch is broken, I just wonder what makes AnkiSRS so much better than ankimini that it's worth 25 dollars. Sure, it WILL have media support, but me and a lot of people don't use media. It probably looks a LOT better, but 25 dollars better? I guess I will wait until I buy an iPhone this autumn, if the price of the app is lower or if it has features I actually need which are lacking in ankimini, I will buy it. I also really enjoy not having to run a webserver on my phone 24/7 for anki. However, media support is already in the betas and working nicely and Damien plans to keep adding more features like a drawing pad and editing. Many people are buying it simply as a form of thanks to Damien and to support continued development, which is a good idea. Also, ankimini is now dead unless someone else takes it over from what I hear. I wonder how OS4 / ipad support is... Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - Grinkers - 2010-05-27 I only use text-only cards too, and it loads new cards a lot fast and supports furigana. That alone is worth it for me. Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - Kubelek - 2010-05-27 anybody using it on original i pod touch 1g? I don't know whether to splash out for a new 3g ipod touch or just buy the oldest, cheapest thing. I was worried it would be much slower though. Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - Jarvik7 - 2010-05-27 You should jailbreak anyways. I don't use any JB apps or themes, but there are a ton of things that don't work satisfactorily (imo) that can be tweaked with patches from Cydia. Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - kerosan41 - 2010-05-27 I got the app to show Damien some support, but I can't use it >_< I think my deck is too big. 5k+ and it crashes every time I try to download. Hope this gets addressed in a patch. I had the same problem with study arcade, I couldn't download my main deck. I think its just too big for the app. Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - Groot - 2010-05-27 So far it works great for me! I downloaded four decks onto it: Tae Kim, a JLPT vocab deck, a Core 2000 deck, and a Spanish vocab deck. It took me about 2 minutes to download the app and another 2-3 minutes to download those four decks. I didn't sync any of my media-heavy decks because there's no media support in the app yet, so I can't comment on whether very large decks cause crashes. Anyway, once I started reviewing, the program ran smoothly. It's so nice to be able to review without a keyboard or mouse, heh. The buttons feel about "right" to me -- maybe could be a tad bigger, but I'll have to play with it more to see. Obviously it will be good to have media, but half my decks are vocab only, so it's already very useful for me. Anything that lets me roam free while I study is a huge plus. I hate being chained to a PC or even a laptop. Right now I'm using it on my iPad, and I'm surprised that it doesn't look as "fuzzy" and "low rez" as some iPhone apps look on the iPad. It'd still be nice to have a high-resolution version, but that's a very low priority compared to media and other features. I'm going to try it on my iPhone shortly. All in all, good job, Damien! I expect when Damien wakes up he'll be able to sort it instantly. Are you jailbroken? If so, are you multitasking with other apps open? Downloading a large deck will use a large chunk of memory so make sure Anki is the only app running. Also try downloading over 3G instead of just Wi-Fi - it might take longer but if there's a bug in Wi-Fi download it might bypass it. Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-05-27 kerosan: someone in the Anki forums ran into the same problem. You can try reboot your phone to clear some memory, and turn off AnkiMini if it's running since that takes up memory in the background. You should be able to download up to 40mb decks that way. I have a fix in that will download arbitrarily big decks, and I hope to push it to Apple within a few days (with media support too). OTOH 5k cards? facts? How big is it in MB? Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - scotty28 - 2010-05-27 hey kerosan41 I had the same problem with my main deck which was pretty huge. Tried to download it and after a while it just crashed. I freed up memory space using the "system activity monitor application", and also killed all background noise(safari, mail) rebooted my iphone, and after a couple of attempts my main deck downloaded alright and now syncs perfectly. Many thanks resolve, I've waited for this a long time and am very pleased. Like many others, out of all the resources I've used to learn Japanese this anki has been the most useful(and this website with all the cool postings and utilities like sub2srs a close second!). The price is a bargain. Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - sethg - 2010-05-27 I have to say, even without the media support implemented yet, this has made reviewing SO much easier for me. There's just a big difference between sitting at a computer (even a laptop), and doing reviews, and then... waking up, turning on the iTouch and knocking out a few reviews. Until media support comes along I'm just burying my media cards and reviewing them later on the desktop (I have a lot of "visual vocab", which is just picture on the front, kanji/reading on the back for individual concrete nouns). My deck is 5159 cards at 29.5 MBs so I should be within the limits. It must be a memory issue. I'm not sure sure how to turn off ankimimi, so maybe I'll try the system activity monitor... Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - ninetimes - 2010-05-27 Bought, rated, reviewed, and using. Thanks a ton, resolve. (Feature thought: progress bar for deck download )
Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - Blahah - 2010-05-27 @kerosan41 if you have SBSettings installed, you can use the 'processes' button in there to kill all other processes. You can also find an SBSettings toggle to turn off AnkiMini in Cydia. Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-05-27 You could temporarily uninstall it and reboot your phone to reclaim the memory. You should be able to squeeze 29.5MB in with the first release - I think one of the beta tester's decks was 37MB Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - Blahah - 2010-05-27 resolve bear in mind the 3G has half the memory of the 3GS (128mb compared to 256mb). Beta testers with large decks may have had 3GSs. Still, if you kill other running processes you should have enough memory. Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-05-27 I downloaded a 25MB deck on a 128mb 2nd gen 2G, so hopefully 29MB'll squeeze in. I'm sorry about this - nobody hit this in beta testing. Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - kerosan41 - 2010-05-27 Resolve, I uninstalled AnkiMini as per your instructions and I was still having issues. Next I turned off notifications AND cleared the memory again, and I squeaked the sync through over wifi. Thanks for the advice. The update next week will be a welcome addition. The iPhone memory limitations are starting to be rather annoying. Looks like I have another reason to look at the iPad launch tomorrow. Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-05-27 Taylor: if you don't want to wait, drop me an email with your device's UDID and I'll add you as a beta tester so you can use the code immediately. |
