Draak Wrote:Its free. as in $0.
resolve Wrote:So while you rejoice in getting good Android software for free on a thread about an iPhone app, please spare a thought for all the work that went into its creation, and the four years of work that went into the desktop client it was based off.
I read resolve's comment to Draak as simply a reminder to be grateful about the work that has been given.

Unfortunately there is still a lot of misunderstanding about free software. It's free as in "free speech", not "free beer".

Why is it that even here in such a bright community, there is this stigma about money?

Resolve doesn't owe you ANYTHING. You should be really grateful to have Anki on your Android at all.

@abdwef: Can you spare us the rhetorics? Who the hell are you to tell Resolve what he should do with his life? What kind of progress would others have made on his code? AFAIK he's writing 95% of it. Every open source project needs leadership, otherwise it's going nowehere, or it's turning into a humongous mess of an application.

abdwef Wrote:I have to question your knowledge of your own software, given these (and earlier) comments.
I have to ask the same of you. Did you even look at iPhone development? Because of Apple's strict guidelines, managing an open source project for an app on iPhone is clearly more complicated.

abdwef Wrote:Why does Damien deserve to make a living from Anki? I use Anki and love it, but realistically people like us are in the minority. I don't think the program will make a lot of money. Nevertheless, Damien is well within his rights to sell it, even were he to license it under the GPL. But it's a foolish man who puts all his eggs in one basket, so I stand by my earlier statement that Damien should not have quit his job to work full-time on an iPhone app.
You are being very negative here, and without any good reason. Did it ever come to your mind that there may be many people out there who think just the opposite? It's fantastic for Damien to try this opportunity. A lot of people have made good business on iPhone and Damien has put so much work in his app he deserves also to be successful with it. You are just spewing your negativity on this board for no good reason.

Admin:

Therefore I'm asking you to stay out of this thread from this point on. If you'd like to argument the finer points of the GPL, even as it applies to Anki then you're welcome to create a topic in the Koohii Lounge forum.

Since you are wasting the administrator time by reporting three other people's posts as "troll posts" (oh the irony), I am warning you that you will be temporarily banned from this forum if you post any further attacks either here or on the Koohii Lounge topic I mentionned above.

@everyone: please post GPL arguments to the Koohii Lounge, thank you.

abdwef Wrote:As moderator, you should know that it is customary to PM a member if you wish to discuss something with them in an administrative capacity, not post it in public in an attempt to embarrass them. Please extend me that courtesy in the future. Thanks.
Oh now you deserve courtesy? FYI, on this forum I'll moderate as I wish. The forum guidelines are incredibly simple: be courteous and respectful towards other members. So long as you can understand that you'll never have to worry about unfair treatment by the moderators (me or kazelee).

Kazelee may also choose to moderate differently, or less expediently than I do, which I'm happy with. He's more patient than I am (*hint hint*).

Admin warning above still applies.

abdwef Wrote:I'm going to assume that you're not speaking as a moderator. Regardless, I will not "leave it at that", because I think you are incorrect. I think he is violating the GPL, which is copyright infringement.

Even if you were right, the positive development should be to handle this privately with Damien and/or contact the FSF and other concerned groups to get to the bottom of the matter. Further arguments here will be considered as personal attacks, as I think Damien has clearly explained and answered your questions already.

abdwef Wrote:If someone would like to disagree with me, please do so without making personal attacks, and only if you have some knowledge of the legal issues in play. Thanks.

And where are your positive contributions here? You're just defendinfg your stand (ego), and not posting anything of substance here. I'm still waiting for a link to the GPL license and quote the paragraphs that apply and confirm your accusations.

As I said in previous posts, I invite you to argument the finer points of the license in a Koohii Lounge thread. Further posts here attacking Damien or anyone else will be heavily moderated.

Oh how I envy those "open source is god" kids. Full of ideals, living with and off of their parents, not knowing the value of money, not having to support you and/or your family and creating such wonderful theories about everything without actual practical knowledge about life.

Yeahh thats a typical student for you, I'd know I've been one of them.

Truth is its Damien's software and he can do whatever he wants to do with it regardless of license. He decided to try to make a living from something that he likes to do, is that a crime?

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - blackmacros - 2010-05-24

Just like to say that I've been hoping for a native iPhone Anki app for ages, and will definitely buy it as soon as it is released.

Thanks a bunch for all your hard work resolve, and I hope working on Anki full time starts to pay off for you Smile

I'd say that the real crime is that Damien has created and maintained such a wonderful piece of software, Anki, and has as of yet not been able to make a living from doing so. I am glad that through the iPhone app Damien will be able to truly reap the benefits of his handiwork. It is well deserved.

Quote:I think he is violating the GPL, which is copyright infringement.
Woah, woah, woah.

Someone doesn't understand how copyright/software licensing works.

Resolve OWNS the copyright to the source code, he can LICENSE it however he wishes to whomever he wishes. This is how models like mysql work.

ETA: Opps, just saw the admin's post.. if someone would like to continue the copyright/GPL discussion, feel free to start a thread in the Lounge.

Do we have word on when this is coming out, and whether it will have the drawing pad in it?

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - sethg - 2010-05-24

Oh wow... drawing pad... if it's not in iphone app 1.0, it would be an awesome feature to see in the future! Smile

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-05-24

kap: The first version was submitted to Apple on the 19th. We are waiting for Apple to get around to approving it.

I will probably add a drawing pad in the second or third release.

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - kapalama - 2010-05-24

There is a homebrew Anki solution out there with the drawing pad built in. I got it running once, and then it stopped working.

For me, that is when I buy in. I already 'mostly' know a bunch of kanji. It is the "did I really get it right?" that I need.

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - cjane - 2010-05-25

I am more than happy with AnkiMini on my iPod Touch, but I will certainly be buying the Apple approved app, if for no other reason than to thank resolve for all his hard work in producing Anki and to support future developments.

I'll be keeping an eye on this forum and App Store for it to appear!

Appreciate the support. :-)

I've set up a site where people can vote for the features they want - please have a look at the forum post: http://groups.google.com/group/ankisrs/browse_thread/thread/3e6934e76f41ffbc?hl=en_US

I had a thought -

So when this drops it would be great if people grabbed it right away - I'm thinking if enough do in a short amount of time, it might get up in the charts or hot apps, and then more people would see it on the apps home page.

I'm not sure how it works for apple apps, but I have a friend who produces music, and sells it on beatport (the number one legal digital store for electronic music for those who don't know it). He was able to reach #2 on the dub step charts by promoting the release well to his fan-base (which is decent, but not massive), which broke him into the top 30. from there people were able to see it in the chart, and it climbed. This gained him greater status as a "chart topper", and now he gets put in the "featured artists" when he releases new stuff, which is a huge leg up.

I have no idea if this could work for resolve, but I think it's worth saying that we should try to break this. So - if you plan on buying it anyway when the added features are released, why not help the cause and get it now? I think we all well know resolve will do what he says for the future additions, so it makes no difference in the long run, but it could be a difference maker in the short run.

Can't wait for the app!

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - Grinkers - 2010-05-25

I don't to be negative, but I don't think that'll work too well. $25 is a lot of money compared to most other applications, and there's no real way to show that Anki is the best through just download/reviews. So what this means is there probably won't be too many impulse buyers (mostly people already using Anki).

I have a hard time trying to get friends/classmates to use Anki when it's free and I can show them my decks (and website, intro movies, etc). It's too bad too because so many people are missing out Sad

I hope I'm wrong, and I can't wait for the app Big Grin

Great idea!

Just out of curiosity, though, does this site kind of read as a "features list"? As in, all of the things you could possibly vote for will be added eventually, but the voting is just for which things get prioritized? Because I have to say, it was really hard to choose! All of those features looks so good and tempting...

Added some votes...

Drawing pad is a top request from me Smile

Great job resolve!

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - TaylorSan - 2010-05-25

Yeah - good point - 25 is a big price for joe shmoe who doesn't know how great anki is.

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - Grinkers - 2010-05-25

However, if it top some weekly charts or something like that, at least people might take a second glance "what's this $25 thing that's selling so well?", then research it a little?

However realistically I think it'll probably remain a "speciality" item, which is why it's priced so high (at least originally).

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - TaylorSan - 2010-05-25

Yeah I think your right. But yeah - it would be cool if the RTK/Anki army made a splash at apple, and the app got some extra attention. Getting noticed can be a boon.

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - sethg - 2010-05-25

It'd be cool to coordinate something like that... but I think I'm gonna buy it the minute I see it released Tongue I'm too excited to wait. It will make reviews so much simpler.

Maybe we'll end up doing it without coordination, because we all buy it the minute it's released Tongue

I really appreciate the support, but I don't think Anki's in danger of hitting any top 20 lists at this point. My focus has always tended towards serious learners, which is a small market compared to the casual learner market. Casual studiers would understandably find themselves hard pushed to drop more than a few dollars on an application.

Perhaps an alternative way to fund Anki in the future would be to strip it down to the basics, offer all the often-requested study tools with questionable efficacy like multiple choice and 'games', and whack a low price point on it. I'm not really interested in doing that though :-)

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - Grinkers - 2010-05-25

I think the cram mode might be pretty good for more casual learners. However, I think there's already lots of "casual" flash card programs out there, so the effort vs reward might not be all that great.

Also I can't really see casual learners typing up their own flash cards... I don't even want to do it, and I'm in it "forever".

One of the features is "The same proven algorithm as the desktop client. ".

So what SRS algorithm does the app version use, and how is it different?

EDIT: the voting site implies it's the same, but you won't be able to configure the deck SRS settings within the app. Yep that makes more sense
