Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - overture2112 - 2010-10-28

Wanted to say thanks. Just bought the new app after using the free one on cydia for awhile. While ultimately it's the same thing, all the small tweaks and improvements make it completely worth it. For anyone who's on the fence, I'll add that the pre-fetching of the next card, the lack of a python webserver delay, the addition of gestures and other UI improvements, etc easily cut down 2 seconds per card (more for the ones where I normally would have to zoom), which makes a big difference when you're doing hundreds of reviews a day.

Not sure if this has been asked before, but is it possible for those of us who have bought the new app to get access to the source if we want to try out some tweaks (and presumably send any useful patches upstream to you)?

I'm afraid I haven't released the source at this point. Without the income from AnkiMobile I wouldn't be able to work on Anki full time, and releasing the source code would make it possible for someone to repackage it and sell it for a cheaper price. Even if I were to assign a license to the code which specifically prevents that, I don't have the money to pursue offenses through the legal system, so I'd rather not take the risk at the moment.

Fair enough.

Has the writing tablet been enabled yet?

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-11-01

If you mean a scratchpad to jot down kanji etc, yes - see the bottom of the support page.

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - kapalama - 2010-11-01

Clicked on your website link, and I don't see a support page listed. Where is the support page on the bottom of which I can read about the scratchpad?

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-11-02

Every app in iTunes has a support link. Visit the app's page in iTunes to find it.

i bought the app for my ipod touch, then got an Android G2 phone :cries: oh well

edit: i should mention though, happy to support anki development regardless, I'll patiently use the open source version of anki for the droid until the day comes when it gets some love.

A big thank you from Switzerland. I love Anki and AnkiMobile! I have it on my iPhone, iPad and Mac.

I think the price tag is steep but you deserve every cent, so I gladly paid the 25 bucks. It has made my life so much easier!

One suggestion: unsuspend while on the go. Maybe I'm stupid, but I haven't found a way to unsuspend cards except on my Mac.

Example: Heisig. 3007 facts. I have all the ones I don't know yet suspended and unsuspend the new ones when I learn them. But when I'm not home or away for a few days without my mac I can't unsuspend them because I can't access them - correct?

Anyway - a big thank you again! A donation will be on it's way when I finish RTK1. And another one after RTK3.

Cheers!

hotsw4p: sorry to hear that, but thanks for your support!

truando: thanks for the kind words! I'll look into adding unsuspend support in the next release

That would be brilliant! Thanks! I'll be finished with Heisig by then (at 1740 now), but not finished with Japanese for a long time Smile

Very awesome app. I bought an iPod touch exclusively for using Anki on it despite hating Apple and all it stands for. Keep up the good work Smile

@resolve:

Just bought ankimobile without having ever used anki before, because I wanted to use one of the good heisig decks available for download. Up to now, I had been using Mental Case on the iPhone to do my SRS vocab study in japanese...

Then comes Ankimobile.

What an amazing piece of software... I am falling in love with Anki now. So much better and flexible and practical than Mental Case that I will gladly re-create all my personal japanese decks on it. And it syncs perfectly with the Anki servers, something that Mental Case required me to physically plug in my iphone to the macbook before - I am really happy with it.

Thank you and keep up the good work - these were easily the best $25 I spent lately.

Glad to hear it's working well for you :-)

I'm loving it too. Quick question: Is it currently possible to change the colour of text on a card through the editing interface of ankimobile?

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-11-18

If you mean a word within a field is coloured, then you can change the HTML color code, which is awkward but works on all devices, even those still running iOS3.x.

I also bought Anki for the iPhone but im having some problems which is no doubt due to my stupidity but Ill ask anyway.

I have the decks on my desktop anki, my ankionline and my phone anki but they dont sync from my phone... If I press sync it says decks not on server so I have different review numbers on each anki.

What am I missing? :/

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-11-20

It sounds like the decks on your phone have a different name to the ones in AnkiOnline. Did you get the decks via the download button in AnkiMobile?

OK, in a bit of a dilemma. I bought a japanese DSLL (DS XL) about a year ago to play japanese games and help learn kanji. Lost the kanji game I had and now have a few games I don't play much along with a good japanese dictionary. However, now that I have an iphone I was thinking that I don't need the DS anymore. There are some good kanji games out there that I've read about (Tadashi Kanji kakitorikun was one I was thinking of getting) but now I think that I could do the same thing with the iphone and this anki application. Any opinions on whether I should sell it back to the GEO that I bought it from and just use the yen to get dvds and such.

Thanks.

I had put them on ankimobile via itunes originally so maybe that caused a bit of a problem.
I overwrote the decks with the ankionline decks and seems to be fine now.

I had been reviewing from my iphone the last few days and it lost the data buts OK I just caught up again while I am supposed to be working... Tongue its not too bad working a weekend when your the only one in the office.

The iPhone is no substitute for the Japanese gaming thats available on DS. While ankimobile is awesome (main reason I bought an ipod touch) for portable Japanese gaming DS is still the best option. I say keep both.

Finally broke down and got an iPhone. So far I can say that your app has definitely made it worth it - it's what pushed me over from android, let alone made me consider buying a smartphone in the first place. Many hours will be saved with this; thanks.

Always happy to hear of happy users :-)

I updated to 1.2 today. Any ideas on how to use the applink feature with Japanese (the dictionary)? I'll get myself daijirin if it works with that as well. I have a link to it on Yahoo, but obviously an offline version would be much more convenient.
