Off-topic: Just so you know, my donation to you was listed as a payment, not a donation. I am not sure, but wouldn't you get more of the money if you took donations not payments?

On topic: Iif the deck I am working on already has the

(for the drawing pad)

line in it, will this screw up with the app as it is currently setup?

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-05-28

PayPal won't accept donations in the Asia region. That's why my PayPal account was frozen 2 weeks ago, and I'll have to wait 6 months to get the $400 which was in it back.

Canvas tags won't screw up the app, but you won't see any scratchpad yet.

@Blahah

How do the system resources of an iPhone 3G hold up to multi-tasking?

Tobberoth Wrote:I wasn't aware that the iPhone was a japanese learning tool and that the only important thing you ever do on it was learn Japanese. You jailbreak because it makes your iPhone better, not to learn Japanese.
Almost all of my apps are either native apps or Japanese learning apps. In what ways will jailbreaking make my iPhone better for my purposes?

I won't be buying the app. I already made my donation, and AnkiMini is configured and running fine for me as it is. I'll definitely look into it once I'm no longer a poor college student, though.

For me, the best value in jailbreaking would be the ability to install the KanjiStrokeOrder font.
- Heisig gets stroke orders wrong so often (thanks to this site, I was usually warned of this)
- this font shows how to handwrite the kanji (as opposed to the printed fonts that can sometimes appear different to the handwritten form)

I am curious
1. What is considered the court of last resort is for stroke order differences here? There are a ton of characters that Japanese people simply don't write like any of the online sources I have found. 可 is the specific example I can think of. Apparently the mouth is supposed to be written before the vertical but I have never found a Japanese person who writes it that way. (Including 3 different native Japanese professors who range in age from 60 to 32.

2. Is there a place here where the stroke order errors/disputes are compiled here at RevTK?

I have been 'corrected' on 何 before by a native in the way you say, but on the kanken DS game the far right vertical is last. Not sure where to find the definitive guide.

I've just been using a jailbroken first generation iPhone with proSwitcher for multitasking and it works GREAT!!!!!!

Edit: Actually I've noticed it does slow things down a bit... Not so great then Sad

Might not be your way of doing things, but I mean... appulous let's you download cracked appstore apps. Even if you're against piracy, it is a nice way of trying before buying (which was the original point of the project).

Besides, all your apps are native because your phone isn't jailbroken, it's not like you have a choice. If it was, you would probably find a lot in Cydia which would benefit you. SBSettings, OpenSSH, Flashlight etc.

Well after much stuffing around trying (and failing) to get an ad hoc network set up on my laptop using the inbuilt wifi, I just went out and bought a little wifi usb key from yamada denki and it all works great. Thanks for the tips.

Is there an appropriate place/forum to report bugs or suggest improvements? I noticed a couple of issues:
-There were blank spaces where there should have been none (usually next to some coloured or underlined formatted text). Also, multiple answer fields were all bunched up together on the same line rather than separated vertically from each other.
- Syncing seems to work fine but a card which I marked on the app didn't show up as marked on my desktop client. I have no idea if this is an error with the app or not...

Anyway, fantastic app. It's going to help me out so much and I'll be able to get through more cards now. Money well spent. Going to sleep tonight a happy chappy tonight thanks to this. I hope this nets you lots of moneys Damien, you deserve it.

Bugs are probably best reported on the Anki forum for now.

I've added a note about multiple fields to the wiki:

"If you find multiple fields are showing up on one line, in the desktop client go to Settings>Deck Properties>Edit>Card Templates and add a
at the end of each line in the question and answer format."

Please report again if the blank spaces show up in the first update.

Marking is a known issue - I'll look into it.

Off-Topic

@Tobberoth

I looked at some of the apps recommended to me, and they seem worth the while, even if I could get by without them. I received an error when I tried to restore last night, but I'm going to try again if I have some time tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.

I've just pushed the first update to Apple. It'll take them about a week to check it. Here's the changelog:

* Media support: images, audio and LaTeX for equations are all available now. See the support page for information on setting media up.
* Big images are scaled to fit the screen, and you can pinch to expand them.
* Review Early button to show cards ahead of schedule.
* Learn More button to show more new cards.
* Number of new cards per day is now configurable in the tools screen.
* Fixed memory issues with big decks. You can now download decks above 40MB.
* Deck downloads are now 2-3x faster and have a progress bar.
* Links in decks will now open a web browser from within the app, allowing you to return to studying. This is useful for dictionary links. See the support page for more information.
* Faster initial deck load.
* Much faster switching between decks.
* Faster font scaling.
* Don't go to sleep while syncing.
* Fixed some issues with the status bar and landscape orientation.
* Quickbar will expand to fill screen if deck loaded in landscape mode.
* Fixed an issue with marked cards not being searchable.
* Various other bug fixes and interface tweaks.

Screenshots of the new release are on http://ichi2.net/anki/wiki/AnkiMobile

Wait a second, does the iPhone Anki app require an ad-hoc network to my computer to sync?

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-05-29

It requires a connection to the internet. 3G, standard wireless or adhoc if you don't have anything else.

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - captal - 2010-05-29

I just followed resolve's guide to adding media to AnkiOnline (and eventually the iPhone) using DropBox. Everything seems to be working just fine.

The question is- if we're using DropBox to store our media files- doesn't that mean we'll have to have an internet connection if we're using a deck with media?

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-05-29

All the media is downloaded from DropBox onto your device. An offline client isn't much use if it needs web access :-)

I guess my understanding of the system isn't very good. Is it handled differently with AnkiOnline? AnkiOnline is going to the cloud to get the media whereas the iPod app will download it?

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-05-29

The iPhone app is the same as tools>advanced>download missing media in the desktop client.

The updates sound great! This is going to be the best study app for the iphone. It's already helped up my productivity lots! Thanks again man.

Nice updates resolve, quick work as well!

Looking forward to LaTeX for equations! I just started adding a few physics formula to test the waters for non-Japanese cards a few days ago, so perfect timing.

Thanks for the hard work Resolve.

"Images and audio should now show up in AnkiOnline, and you can download media to the official iPhone client! "

Is there no way to just use dropbox as is? I have all of my decks and media in a dropbox folder (it works just fine as long as i make sure anki is closed while syncing).

Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-05-30

The media must be in the public folder at the moment - to do it otherwise would limit people to using dropbox and dropbox only.
