Not too keen on jailbreaking. It takes one second and is perfectly safe. WHY not jailbreak? Then again, I have no idea, so this is just speculation from an outsider's point of view. I second the question about old hardware. If one were to have, say, a 2nd gen iPod Touch, which might be for sale at a 2nd hand store for relatively cheap, would it run EBPocket/iDic/other dictionary programs and AnkiSRS well? Would it justify the purchase instead of waiting and saving up to get a new one? Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - squarezebra - 2010-05-28 Um, this probably isn't the place to ask, but I thought someone might have a quick answer. I've just done my reviews on Anki iphone app, and hit sync. Yet the data hasn't changed on the anki-online server .. it still shows 26 that ive just reviewd on the app as cards to be reviewed. Is it possible that I'm missing something here? I don't know whether to splash out for a new 3g ipod touch or just buy the oldest, cheapest thing. I was worried it would be much slower though.I'm also interested in the answer to this - I thought I might pick up a cheap 1gen touch (or at a pinch a 2gen) just to run this app and maybe EBPocket. How are people finding the speed on the older hardware? It's running just fine on my 1st gen, but I (obviously) haven't tested media cards yet. Once in a while I get a short bit of lag when the answer pops up, but nothing serious. Then again, I have no idea, so this is just speculation from an outsider's point of view.Yes, all the functions of an unjailbroken device are kept after jailbreaking. Your warranty will not be honoured by Apple if you return a jailbroken device to them, however you can simply restore your iDevice using iTunes and there is absolutely no way for them to tell it was ever jailbroken, so your warranty is valid again. You would have to upgrade to the latest firmware to ensure compatibility. squarezebra Wrote:Um, this probably isn't the place to ask, but I thought someone might have a quick answer. Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - sethg - 2010-05-28 squarezebra, make sure you don't have two anki instances open at once. Like, the desktop client or AnkiOnline while you're syncing from the iPod. You should only have one active at a time. 'JUst works' is the reason why the app store is popular. The jailbreak adds more functionality to your iPhone than 10 apple updates anyway. It's not like you're "stuck" anyway, a iTunes restore fixes it automatically if you desperately want an update. Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - sethg - 2010-05-28 It resolved (no pun intended) for both my friend and I, but just btw, after the first sync from the app, my desktop deck was corrupted. I restarted Anki (desktop) and did a full database check and all seems to be fine now. Same thing happened with my friend. Obviously not a huge issue, but might scare some newer users. But a couple questions. resolve Wrote:1) yep, it'll be in the first update, and 'learn more' tooI just finished my first day of reviews on the new app. After spending the past six months using iAnki on the iPhone, I think the app is a great improvement over iAnki in terms of ease of syncing, startup speed, and support for undo & "mark" functionality. I think the one area where iAnki actually still has an edge over the app is that it's currently impossible to learn more new cards after you've reached your daily limit. (To be honest I don't understand why there has to be a limit -- am I missing something? I guess I got used to the RevTK model where there is no set daily limit. But I suppose that's a topic for another thread.) Very happy with the app overall, and looking forward to the addition of "learn more" in the first update so that I can retire iAnki for good. At the moment, I see no convincing reason to jailbreak for the purpose of learning Japanese. My apps are all Japanese learning apps. Therefore, I don't see any benefits to Cydia unless it offers high quality Japanese learning apps I couldn't get otherwise. I have no use for the customization available to a jailbroken iPhone either. However, I could be missing something. And if I find out that jailbreaking gives a real advantage to studying Japanese, then I'm saying sayonara to Apple's proprietary software. Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - Blahah - 2010-05-28 vileru Wrote:Off-topic:Wow, you're completely missing out on multitasking. With ProSwitcher (open source jailbroken app) you can hold the home button (or use any customised gesture) to open an app-switcher, change to another app, then come back to the first app without ever closing it. So for example you can be reading a manga, switch to a dictionary to look up the word, then switch back to the same page in the manga. OS4 will bring a sort of multitasking, but not like this - it won't actually keep apps running at the same time and current apps won't automatically be supported. Jailbreaking is the only way to do it. see how pretty: http://goo.gl/EwV0 Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - Grinkers - 2010-05-28 I found multitasking pretty underwhelming on my 3G iphone. If I had a 3Gs I'd be all over it, but I just don't have enough ram. I jailbreak only for Anki (now I don't need it), SSH, and flashlight. I like SBSettings a lot (I think that's what it's called), but it slows down my phone too much. So I haven't found much Japanese-learning use from jailbreaking either. Mine is 67 MB because I use it as a sort of media-database; I keep all of my subs2srs cards (and all my other cards) in one deck, so I can search through it and activate any media-cards containing a new word I'm learning. Will a deck this large sync with the app currently? If not I'll probably wait until an update rolls round before I buy it.It should be about a week until the update is available in the app store. Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying? - resolve - 2010-05-28 squarezebra Wrote:Probably your counts are just out of sync. Are you sure you didn't modify both the local deck and the server side before syncing? Anyway, on your desktop run a DB check, then sync. That will force the full deck to the server. Then sync with the iStuff client and it will grab the full, checked deck from the server.sethg Wrote:squarezebra, make sure you don't have two anki instances open at once. And of course anki for iPad so there are bigger buttons to press! . . . okay so I'm just trying to stay topical. Kind of a pipe dream though re; the reader, can't imagine there is much of a market for it. Although I am a bit unawares as to the proliferation of ebooks in Japan. I assume part of the reason to develop this app is to have an income source that pays server bills. (How many people have donated to you at the Anki site? I gave you $50.00 so I am wonderful, but have you gotten many other donations?) This month, partly due to PayPal issues, there weren't many at all. |
