I need to get ahold of Snow Leopard... too bad my macbook CD-drive went down the shitter. Man, the first release of macbooks SUCKED SHIT, my macbook is barely useable at this point.

You don't need to have an optical drive to install. You can just losslessly partition off 8gb or so from your hdd, restore the image to that, and then install. Alternatively you can restore the image to an external usb drive or ipod.

My first Apple laptop (an old g3-500 ibook) would always spontaneously vomit out the CD tray. The latch was worn or something. I did buy it used for $400 though.

Too bad I can't losslessly partition off 8GB Sad. I have no continuous free space, and to defrag I need iDefrag, which needs to be run from a boot CD... since my macbook can't read CDs, that's out of the question. Snow Leopard also has a lock, so it can't be restored to an iPod (like Leopard could). My external harddrive is not in GUID partition scheme, so I can't use it.

I'm just completely screwed. All I can do is download Leopard, restore to my iPod, reinstall Leopard and in the process leave a partition for Snow Leopard, restore Snow Leopard to it, and install. Such a bother.

after hearing..

"Its not my fault, the computer has performed an error" about 600 times daily in college using Apple products, i refuse to go near them, even for an Ipod or Iphone. For the stress they caused me, I'm never handing them a penny if i can help it.

and yes incidently it was the computers &$@*#ng fault.. everytime.

So, I installed Snow Leopard and I'm using it now but... uh... how do I actually use the 手書き function? I can't find it anywhere.

EDIT: I've tried ctrl+shift+space which I saw online people used, but it does nothing.

You have to add it as an input method in the languages prefpane (traditional chinese)

Ï have added traditional Chinese, it's still not working. It's like before, I can pick any of the tons of Chinese input methods (Zhuyin, Pinyin, Cangjie, Jianyi, Dayi Pro) but not any form of handwritten recognition...

I'm updating Snow Leopard now, hoping it will show up... but since I got the WWDC version, I find it odd it wouldn't be in by default.

WWDC version is old, maybe it doesn't have the tekaki panel. On mine the tekaki panel is listed as one of the many Chinese input methods (one each for traditional and simplified)

Get 10A432, which is supposedly GM.

Nope, like the ipod it is for hanzi/kanji only. I only plan on using it to lookup unknown characters in my kanji dictionary without having to resort to bushu/primitive/stroke count menus or guessing the reading.

That is not the case in Vista. You just check on a check box and you have Japanese input.

Also, in Vista, there is hand writing recognition for Japanese, if you have a tablet. They're only $60 for a really nice one from Wacom these days, and you can use it instead of a mouse in case your wrists are giving out like mine did.

Not the case with windows (xp and above) at all, really. Just go to the control panel and click a few buttons. I had to go more out of my way with Ubuntu than with XP and Ubuntu you just need a few commands to get you started.

Those are actually the lower end ones. But if you're not doing any artwork they should fit your needs perfectly.

I tested out the Handwriting capabilities in Snow Leopard tonight, very slick stuff.
