てくれる is one of the usual 'giving' auxiliary expressions to indicate a favor is being done to subj. of the main verb.

This would be true for もらう/いただく; but with くれる/くださる, isn't the favor given by the verb subject, and given to either the speaker or someone/something directly related to the speaker (e.g. their company)?

I think 誰か is the subject in this sentence, though the subject marker has been omitted.

Hmmm.... you're right. The person being watched over would be the object not the subject, I'm not sure what I was thinking when I wrote that. That is why I find the translation 'you' to be strange though, くれる sentences are usually 'someone does for me' sentences.

I just had this strange idea that the target of くれる should have grammatical position in the sentence, but now that you point out my mistake and I try to pin it down, I guess they don't need to.

I read this as いろいろあるね、って笑った。 with ね being the well known sentence ending particle and って being the casual と. Alc explains いろいろある pretty well. I've seen it most often in past form, meaning something like '(all kinds of / lots of) stuff happened'.

the ずに is after the 歌う so shouldn't it be

I think the translation is wrong but it's slightly different from what you think. The 思うように is describing the singing, and together the form a single phrase that is negated by the ず, so the actual translation would be more along the lines of:

Unable to sing the way I imagine

i.e. Their voice never comes out the way they intend.

Edit: But yes, I think you''ve understood ずに correctly.

Xanpakuto: the way Japanese connects "the <noun> of <clause>" is <clause><noun>, e.g. 心を休ませる時 -> "when I let my heart rest". See http://amaterasu.tindabox.net/guide/Clauses.php for more information.

時には alone (i.e. only when it's not connected to anything on its left side) means "at times; occasionally", so the line means "<your right shoulder> sometimes enables my heart to rest". I would have said "Let your heart rest sometimes!" before I looked up the song.

ても is て form + も.

Woah this is a really good site. But anyway the あってても。 is ある+て+も。 Isnt て+も=ても- which means if?

Upload. うｐ主 is the uploader (in this case the 実況者). Opinions on how to pronounce that are divided -- some people say アップ主, some say ウップ主.

First, just あっても. Yes, but it means "even if". I just meant that て-form + も is always ても (well, でも for む/ぶ/ぬ/ぐ verbs, not to be confused with stand-alone でも) and that it's the only way to form ても so the answer to your either-or question was "both".

Hello all~

I'm trying to understand these lyrics:
一つの幸せに二人で寄り添った
最初の思い出を残せたはずだった
「夢色ハネムーン」楽しくて愛しくて
最後の思い出と知るすべはなかった

I was really confused with the last line because of the 「と知る」. If と is acting as a quoting particle for 知る, I thought that what comes before it must be a sentence, but in this case it's just a noun.
But then I remembered it's a song, and maybe the copula that should supposedly come before と was left out for, I don't know, rhythmic purposes.

After this realisation, I came up with this translation:

We cuddled together in one happiness
I should have been able to leave behind our first memories
A dream-colored honeymoon, enjoyable, lovely
I had no way of knowing those would be our last memories

Besides the last line, I'm still confused about the second line too, because of the double past with はず. Any words on that are appreciated.

This translation makes sense considering the rest of the song, which is about saying goodbye and not being able to see each other again, but I'm not sure about it. Do you think it's an acceptable translation? Or better, do you think I understood what the lyrics are saying?
