Reviewing with primitives in question? - Surreal - 2009-06-12

So after reading on AJATT how Khatz reviewed kanji where the primitives were included in the question and thinking back on Heisig recommending you write the keywords upside-down when making your own flashcards I've been wondering how much of a difference that makes. Some people say doing it like Khatz would make it too 'easy', making it take longer until you truly know the kanji by heart, and I wonder if using the primitives to remember the kanji instead of just checking it right away makes much of a difference.

I can't figure it out and I suspect it has to do with what kind of person you are but has anyone tried the different methods? It would be interesting to hear about - of course, other comments are welcome too.

When I was around to 400 kanji point, I only tried it one day, but I think it was because I thought that doing it that way would make it so I could add 50-100 stories without needing to remember the keyword->story step. Somehow, my retention dropped from like 80% down to like 10% for new cards (ok, I could be exagerated but that's what it felt like). I immediately went back to the way I was doing it on the RTK site. I'm sure it can work, after a couple of fails I'm sure the cards would be just as good, but it freaked me out enough to make me go back to what was already working so well.

There was a big discussion (read: argument) about this in the 100 kanji a day thread.

If you're doing 100 kanji a day, I would recommend including the primitives on the question side of the card but removing them once you have finished the book. This is simply because, at that pace, you will be done so quickly (~20 days) that it won't have time to mess with your long term recall- but you need a mechanism to ensure that you don't drown in reviews. Primitives on the question side accomplish this.

If you're not doing 100 kanji a day, there is no real need to include the primitives on the question side because you shouldn't be under so much pressure with reviews.

Personally I did have them in my questions while I was adding 100/day and from the very beginning. I found that removing the primitives after I had finished resulted in a 5-10% drop in recall rates, which I think is acceptable.
