Japanese cooking! - harusame - 2009-05-24

I cooked うどん today! I found a really simple recipe and made it with chicken: http://www.recipezaar.com/Simple-Udon-Soup-146186
I just searched the internet randomly, so I have no idea how good of a recipe this is, but my husband and I both liked it! There's a big Asian food market about 5 minutes from our apartment, so it was easy to find everything.

I was thinking I might try そば next week. Does anybody know any good recipes for that or anything else? Does anyone here cook Japanese food on a regular basis?

Oh, I've been trying some Japanese recipes recently. This morning I made Osaka style okonomiyaki minus some of the more exotic ingredients. http://www.justhungry.com/okonomiyaki-osaka-style

Last week I made nikuman from the recipe on this site. http://www.katch.ne.jp/~takeda/sonota/nikuman.htm I've been wanting to try nikuman for ages, and it never occured to me to make it myself. I used a big pot and a strainer with paper towel instead of a steamer. It turned out really good ^.^

I bought some sweet rice in hopes of making my own mochi, but I haven't done that yet.

back before i came to japan I tried to make mochi with a blender, and I wasn't sure, it was okay ... now i know, it was awful compared to the real thing. I hope your mochi attempt involves the crushing and folding of hot steamed short grain rice. Also a wooden mallet is good. Smile

check that out!

Ha ha, well I don't think I can do that. I'm planing to use a bowl instead of a mortar, and something with a blunt end to mash it with. Here's one of the sites I was looking at http://www.ajiwai.com/otoko/make/moti_fr.htm
