After RtK1? - vinniram - 2009-05-23

Hey all,

I've been reading about RtK2, and have come to the conclusion that it isn't very good, because it focusses overly on onyomi, and only gives one reading per character. So, what are some better resources out there for truly LEARNING a kanji, as in knowing ALL the onyomi and kunyomi readings, and perhaps knowing the actual meanings of the kanji, rather than the Heisig keywords. If there are any good resources out there that achieve this, and cover most of the kanji in RtK1 (or, hopefully, even more), I'd appreciate if you could point me in the right direction.

I wrote a list of Manga, Movie, and Anime recommendations a while back. Hopefully this list will point you in the right direction:

Perhaps starting the 2001.Kanji.Odyssey Compiled Lists on smart.fm
(This is what I do, to learn readings, through vocab)

@vinniram
We in this forum memororize sentences with the aid of an SRS, generally Anki.
Alyks sugested you to get sentences from media, hotkiller from a textbook.

Knowing all the on'yomi and kun'yomi isn't all that important, you shouldn't measure progress like that. It's only important to know how kanji are read in words you know, who cares if a kanji can be read in a certain way if you don't know how to use it?

That's why you should learn from sentences, so you learn actual Japanese that you will use.
