What are some good Unlicensed Manga? - crayonmaster - 2009-05-21

Nuriko Wrote:I'm pretty sure it's still unlicensed -- Reading Yamada Tarou Monogatari is what took me from the beginner to intermediate stage of manga reading. It is the story about "the boy with no faults.. except for that he's poor!" <-- "そんな彼の唯一の欠点は。。。貧乏な事である!" At first it was tough to read, but once past the first volume, I felt a huge level up in my reading ability and speed.
This story revolves around Tarou who's always trying to make as much money as possible with many part time jobs. He's a poor high school student with 6 siblings, a somewhat sickly mom who doesn't work (and always splurges on clothes and tacky, expensive "artwork") and a father who travels the world painting pictures (that usually can't sell). And everyone at his rich kid highschool (Tarou's exempt from tuition because he's the top of his class) thinks he's a true "お坊ちゃん" and there are even some rumors that he's a prince with European lineage.

The comedy in this manga is the best I've ever read. Here's a link to the scans at manga helpers:

I learned a lot of Japanese from this 14 volume manga, especially money/business related words. One of the best things I've done for my Japanese. If anyone wants scans beyond volume 5 I'll be happy to upload.
Quite an interesting story, I could get into this one. Thanks!

龘 means "The movements/appearance of a flying dragon" or something similar. I just thought it looked cool. Wink

You're welcome to you guys who found the Tarou suggestion helpful.
Isn't great how Tarou takes everything food-related so seriously? XD Especially in volume 2 when it's Valentines Day... that's when the story's type of comedy really establishes itself.
For me the Sugiura/Yamada situation that goes on over the course of the series is what makes it Smile

There are also drama CDs. If anyone's interested, let me know.

Apparently there's a drama for Tarou too.

I'm watching the series now Smile Couldn't have gotten a more perfect actor for Tarou! It's hard for me to get used to what they did with Sugiura though... In the manga he's narcissitic and even somewhat refined, but in the drama he's still narcissistic but has a really annoying slacker/"cool"/bad boy character (even though he has the third best grades in the class, which is staying true to the manga). Oh well, it's a pretty entertaining show
