Manga Study/Translation Group - cerulean - 2009-05-01

okay, thanks, I'll follow along.

here's the link for the first page for those just walking in:

Manga Study/Translation Group - sheetz - 2009-05-01

Here's what the first page would look like using MH standard format. The page number used is the page number in the file. In this case, page 1 is the front cover, so the dialog actually begins on page 2. Hence it'd look like this:

Pg 02
Side Text: 新シリーズ!! 帝丹小(ていたんしょう)へやって来た白鳥(しらとり)警部のお目当ては、もちろん…

Kobayashi: え? 盗難事件?

Kobayashi: もしかして、今日もニュースでやってたあれですか?
Shiratori: ええ… 戸締りには気をつけてください…

Shiratori: この界隈の宝石店や古美術店(アンティークショップ)を荒らし回っている窃盗犯で、今月に入ってもう5件目ですので…
Kobayashi: でも、ここは小学校、盗られる(とられる)物なんて…

Shiratori: いやいや、用心に越した事はありません!
何かあればすぐに僕に連絡を!
飛んできますから!
Kobayashi: あ、はい!
------------------------------------------------------------------

ETA: Hmm, the page number in the downloaded file is different than the one from the online viewer. I guess we'll work that out somehow.

Manga Study/Translation Group - albion - 2009-05-01

So having a go with that format from page 3:
http://mangahelpers.com/downloads/read-online/25510/4?t=1241205304

Mitsuhiko: また来てますね 白鳥警部…
Genta: 昨日も来てたよなぁ?
Ayumi: うん!

Ayumi: 仕事熱心だね!
Mitsuhiko: ええ!市民を守る警察官ですから!
Conan: いや、白鳥警部は捜査1課の強行犯係… 担当は主に殺人事件…

Conan: 盗難事件の担当は捜査3課!
まあ、怪盗キッドみてーな予告状を出して空を飛び回り世間を大騒ぎさせる派手な大泥棒は、捜査2課扱いになっちまうけどな…

Genta: じゃあなんで来てんだよ?
Mitsuhiko: 担当でもないのに…
Conan: あ、いや、それは…
Haibara: 仕方ないじゃない?

Haibara: 白鳥警部にとって小林先生は… 運命の人だもの…

I don't know the characters, so I just made a guess based on the little character introductions at the side of the pages.

Side text: ●江戸川(えどがわ)コナン●高校生探偵・工藤新一(くどう・しんいち)が黒ずくめの組織に毒薬を飲まされ小さくなった姿。正体を隠すため、仮の名前・江戸川コナンを名乗って、幼なじみの蘭(らん)の家に居候をしている。

●工藤新一●高校生探偵。今は江戸川コナンの姿で、難事件に挑んでいる。

Manga Study/Translation Group - bombpersons - 2009-05-01

This sounds like an awesome idea =D I've never read Dectective Conan, but I'll give it ago =D

Are we actually going edit the raw with the translations?

Manga Study/Translation Group - sheetz - 2009-05-01

Albion, that's excellent! I don't have time now, but I can help transcribe later on tonight. I'll start from the back end so we don't repeat pages.

Bombpersons, this is strictly about translating and understanding the Japanese. We are not a scanlation group. However, if you would like to do that you're welcome to do so.

Manga Study/Translation Group - albion - 2009-05-01

I didn't intend to, but I ended up finishing the whole lot.

Page 4:

Mitsuhiko: ええ…
ウチのクラスの琢馬君(たくまくん)が、米花町(べいかちょう)5丁目にある親戚の家で友達とかくれんぼをしていた時の事らしいんですけど…

Mitsuhiko: 友達が全然見つからなくて、もう倉しか捜す所がないと思い…
木に登って倉の窓から中をのぞいたら…

Mitsuhiko: 高そうな美術品などが大量に置かれていて…
そのお宝の陰から誰かがこっちを見ていたそうです…

Genta: それ、かくれんぼしてた友達じゃねーのか?
Mitsuhiko: 琢馬君もそう思って 中に入ろうとしたけど、扉に鍵がかかっていて友達の名前を呼んでも出てこないから、家の人に鍵を開けてくれと頼んだんです…

Mitsuhiko: そうしたら家の人は…
その倉はもう何年も開けてないから、人が入れるわけがないって言われて…

Ayumi: そ、それで捜すのあきらめちゃったの?
Mitsuhiko: いいえ!琢馬君が絶対 人がいたと言い張り、鍵を開けてもらって中に入ったら…

Mitsuhiko: さっき見たはずの人やお宝は影も形もなくなっていて…
不思議そうな顔をした琢馬君に、家の人がその倉の言い伝えを教えてくれたそうです…
「この倉に大切な物を置いてはならない… 置けばたちまち消えてしまう…

Page 6:

Ayumi: えぇ~!?
Genta: ま、まさか捜してた友達も倉に食べられちまったのかよ!?
Mitsuhiko: いえ、その後(あと)すぐ別のところからヒョッコリ出て来たそうです…

Mitsuhiko: でも、そのショックで琢馬君は毎晩悪い夢にうなされてるらしいですけど…
Ayumi: 今日も学校お休みしてたもんね…
Kobayashi: なるほど…

Kobayashi: それより、問題はその倉!
一刻も早く我ら少年探偵団でその倉の謎を解いて、琢馬君を安心させてあげなきゃいけない…

Manga Study/Translation Group - sheetz - 2009-05-01

Aw man, you finished it already, albion. I didn't even get a chance to start. lol. Anyway, I've created a thread at MH and I'll transfer the text over.

http://mangahelpers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1335644#post1335644

I'll get started on the translation even though there are still a lot of lines where I'm not 100% of the meaning.

Manga Study/Translation Group - Codexus - 2009-05-02

Mmm, how about talking about the chapter? So who read it? What did you think of it?

For the moment I read it only once without using the dictionary. I feel I had no problem understanding what was going on even though there was a lot I didn't understand in the dialog.

The story so far was OK but I'm a bit disappointed that the new case is one with the school kids (少年探偵団), as they are usually not as interesting as the real cases with Ran and Kogorou Mouri. What do you think the trick was? Some kind of camera obscura effect? Another secret room?

I didn't know もののけ was a real word, I always thought that was just the name of the girl in that movie (I've never seen it as you can guess). ^^"

倉 was easy to understand if you know the Heisig keyword wasn't it?

Manga Study/Translation Group - Tobberoth - 2009-05-02

I'd prefer to read the スザンヌ part >_>

EDIT: Well, I just read it all... is it just me or is it already insanely obvious what the "mystery" is? This is obviously a manga for kids and all but one would think they could be less obvious about it.

Manga Study/Translation Group - sheetz - 2009-05-02

Can some people please post on the MH thread? I can't double post there, and there are parts of the text I don't understand. Like what the heck is オメーラ?

Manga Study/Translation Group - kimagure - 2009-05-02

オメーラ is a casual pronunciation of お前ら(おまえら), which is a rather slangish 'you' (plural only).

Edit. So the very first line would be something like: "Aren't you guys acting unusual?". The literal translation is like: "Doesn't your behavior differ from the usual, guys?"

Manga Study/Translation Group - Codexus - 2009-05-02

sheetz Wrote:Can some people please post on the MH thread?
Well, can't we have the discussion on this forum rather than MH? We wouldn't have to register to another forum and hopefully more people from these forums will be able to see what we are doing and join us.

But where would we hold the discussion? There currently isn't anyplace suitable on these boards, IMO. Assuming we had a new chapter discussion every week we'd soon take over an entire section.

Manga Study/Translation Group - Codexus - 2009-05-02

I don't have the feeling that it would be unwelcome here but if that's the consensus that we should move to MH then I'll follow.

What do the others think?

Manga Study/Translation Group - sheetz - 2009-05-02

I mean the boards aren't set up for any form of Japanese literary discussion at this time. Maybe if a new section were created for that purpose we could go there and that would be great. It would be up to Fabrice.

Manga Study/Translation Group - bombpersons - 2009-05-02

I just posted on the MH thread =D It would be good if we could have a weekly thread here though!

Manga Study/Translation Group - sheetz - 2009-05-02

Much appreciated, bombperson!

I sent Fabrice a message asking if he'd be willing to add a literary discussion forum. If he agrees to it we could have the discussions here, and then I could post our collaborative translation at MH for feedback from the translators over there.

Manga Study/Translation Group - albion - 2009-05-02

I already had an account so it wasn't much of a hassle for me, but I can see why signing up to another forum just for it, and possibly extending the discussion over two sites, might be.

I think, if there's no separate forum here for this kind of stuff, having a topic (or just this one) with a centralised list of what's been done before would be helpful.

I just finished reading a book which used the word たちまち several times, which I didn't know. But I hadn't bothered writing down any examples of it, nor do I remember page numbers. So I'm glad to have this typed up, since I have an example now. And for people working with sentences, it's nice to have a variety of natural Japanese sources ready in addition to more traditional learning material.

Manga Study/Translation Group - ファブリス - 2009-05-02

@sheetz: I would be happy to create the forum, could you provide a short description of what this forum is about ? (for the forum index).

Manga Study/Translation Group - sheetz - 2009-05-02

Fabrice, thank you!

We could include the forum in the Learning Japanese section and call it, "Group Study," with the subheading, "Getting together to learn Japanese." That way it could encompass any of the other group projects that people often come up with.

Manga Study/Translation Group - ファブリス - 2009-05-02

Done. I looked for a few topics to move. Anything else please email topic links to me that you feel could be moved in that new forum. Cheers.

Manga Study/Translation Group - sheetz - 2009-05-02

You are most excellent, Fabrice-sama!

So I think the best way to organize the Conan discussion is to create a new thread for every chapter, although eventually we might need a stickied "master thread" containing links to all the separate chapter discussions.

Manga Study/Translation Group - nac_est - 2009-05-03

Hey, we could set up a fully functional manga scanlation group! With the (relatively) big number of people understanding Japanese and willing to translate we have here, it would be the fastest and most accurate group, wouldn't it? Tongue

Manga Study/Translation Group - sheetz - 2009-05-03

The admin at MH suggested we look into studying one of the newly released series. That could be fun if anybody wanted to get in on the ground floor of a series before it became "big." Go to the link for more details:

http://mangahelpers.com/news/details/165

I'm sure there are enough learners here to support multiple series, so if somebody wants to take up the reins and get another MSG going, feel free to do so.

Manga Study/Translation Group - Chandlerhimself - 2009-05-03

I'm interested in doing another manga. It seems there are a lot of people here doing Conan, so there isn't much point in having 20 people do the same thing(and I don't really like Conan that much). I'd rather start on a new manga, so if someone else wants to start one of the mangas here http://mangahelpers.com/news/details/165 let's start. I'm interested in

Akazukin Eliza (赤ずきんエリーザ)
Baka to Test to Shoukanjyuu (バカとテストと召喚獣)
Blust! (ブラスト)
Hokenshitsu no Shinigami (保健室の死神)
Loose Relation between Wizard & Apprentice(魔法使い(♂)と弟子(♀)の不適切なカンケイ)
Mana Biya (まなびや)
O-Oku Cha-Ka-Pon! (大奥チャカポン!)

If any of these appeal you you, let's get started.
