100 Kanji a day - Minlawc - 2009-08-21 Okay... I tried the 100 kanji a day thing, and I'm pooped. I'll just stick to 40 or 50 a day. I was hoping to finish the book by the end of August, but that won't happen. I just can't review that much in one day. 100 Kanji a day - WontStop - 2009-08-24 I am doing the 80-100 a day on RTKlite and I should be done pretty soon :p Question. Of the 100 that you do each day, What is the distribution of Hard, Good, and Easy? Same thing the next time you see them? 100 Kanji a day - blackmacros - 2009-08-24 Its been a while so I don't remember exactly but...actually, I think I posted a link to my stats from just after I had finished this process here it is: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3619/3524672334_b08b3dc292_b.jpg 100 Kanji a day - Thora - 2009-08-24 btw Someone completed RTK @ 200/day (source: Anki forum). 100 Kanji a day - blackmacros - 2009-08-24 Thats awesome. I had originally intended to do 200/day, actually- but it didn't end up panning out. It doesn't surprise me though that someone could. When I look back at how I was doing things, using my time, I could have been doing it a lot more efficiently. Looking at that picture I just posted of my stats, I see I was only reviewing 257 cards/day (which took me the whole day to do + adding cards). Right now I review on average 500 cards a day, while attending Uni, with no problems. At the peak of my study I was approaching 900 cards a day, with time left to do other things. Sometimes I wish I could go back and do things with what I know now... 100 Kanji a day - tashippy - 2012-01-22 CarolinaCG Wrote:It's not about memorising stories - it's vivid mental images that really make these kanji sink in.ah thanks for the reminder, i was getting stuck on some of my last hundred or two hundred kanji (i'm at frame 1104 in 6th edition) and i was wondering why because they seem like easy kanji since there rae so many with a common primitive like "going". I think I was focusing on these plots and forgot to close my eyes and make a mental image. 100 Kanji a day - KanjiMood - 2012-04-23 Wow, been awhile since I started this topic! In case you are wondering how I got along with 100 kanji a day then read on.. After finishing RtK, I was feeling damn smug and confident so ended up taking the JLPT level 1 test - wow, what a mistake. The thing didn't make any sense, damn cryptic, all I could see was happenstance, "clear the land", sayeth etc jumbled up. The listening part was even worse, had no idea what was going on and broke down crying/sobbing hysterically while simultaneously grumbling about Mr. T. Never again I thought - until recently, I'm now going through RtK at a sensible rate of approx 36 kanji a day (currently on 881). Let me say that RtK 100 kanji a day does work - but its a full time job, you miss a reviews or decide to go drinking one night, it destroys the rhythm and momentum of it UNLESS you are a slightly flexible person that can deal with this (but then why take such a structured approach of 100 a day in the first place). So my timeline has been: - A few years back: 100 kanji a day, got up to 1300 before stopping for reasons unknown (OK I didn't really take the JLPT) - Start of this month: Begun 36 a day, works great, very high pass rate (half because I'm used to RtK methods and half because I sort of remember most kanji from before) - While doing RtK, did remembering the kana/hiragana - Starting Genki.. and things will naturally continue from there.. But I think RtK is a great introduction to Japanese, if you failed before, try again, it will work even better.. 100 Kanji a day - meeatcookies - 2012-04-23 You need a really solid motivation to do 100 kanji/day, if you don't have it, it may be your downfall(number of reviews to do increases dramatically). I did at first 20 kanji/day, tried 100 and now doing 50, which is the best choice i think. Adding 100 kanji per day, may take you to the point, where you have hundreds of reviews to do and crush all your motivation to keep going. Be sure that you've spend enough time on each one from the kanji you learn, or you'll keep forgetting them all the time(even if you remember it now, without creating a vivid image of it, you'll keep forgetting it in the next reviews). If you feel like doing 100 or more, that's fine, but be sure to not overdo it. Remember, that you'll need to keep reviewing for a long time, and it doesn't end when you add the last card. It's better to review for 7 consecutive days, while adding 30 kanji each day, than to add 100 kanji once and struggle with them for the next week. Actually, the most important thing is to keep reviewing everyday, until you've mastered all of them. How fast you add new cards, doesn't define how fast you'll master them. 100 Kanji a day - frony0 - 2012-05-05 I've been doing something like 100 a day. Only after I recovered from my burnout at 1044 though. It's quite easy now, since I seem to soak up kanji like a sponge, and I already have a large corpus of kanji behind me. My anki reviews only come out to around 120 a day too! It really does feel like I'm going downhill now. 100 Kanji a day - KanjiMood - 2012-05-07 120 a day review rate is pretty good.. I'm on kanji #1060 now, I stopped adding for one week at 980 and that helped solidify things a bit and freshen me up. I currently have around 200 reviews a day now and am adding about 40 kanji a day.. my success rate so far is not bad, total correct rate is 93.3% (7400 reps).. I usually just mark them either fail (1) or hard (2), I suppose I should put more in 3 to lessen the reviews a bit? Every other day I write them out which makes response time lower, a drag but what you can do.. My plan is to finish RTK1 by the end of the month.. and then probably do RTK3 next month. I'll go more hardcore on sentences next month, currently learning some basics to help with that.. 100 Kanji a day - kaldaka7 - 2012-06-08 I'm also doing the 100-a-day (20 day) challenge in preparation/celebration of my first trip to Asia on July 9th. :-) I feel good now, but I bet I'll be feeling the burn around day 15. 100 Kanji a day - Saborkan - 2012-06-08 I have to admit, before reading this thread, I had planned on just doing about 20-50 kanji/day depending on what I encountered. Now, knowing that some others have successfully done 100/day, I'd like to try this again. This is going to be my second attempt (the first ended when I became extremely involved mentally in programming and simply stopped doing this) an in my first, I'd reached 500? I believe. At the moment, I don't really know how much I remember but I firmly subscribe to the idea that rushing is the appropriate strategy for this sort of work. Before, I think I wasn't fully committed to Heisig's method and was too wary of internalization in the story. I also wrote down the Kanji too many times. I definitely believe rushing is appropriate because, the sooner you finish, the sooner you can reinforce your learning with actual reading. Short term memory is more important here than longer-term. If you can truly get into reading in another language prolifically on a regular basis, then this step of "learning the alphabet" should be passed through as quickly as possible. People talking about how time will be spent on reviews taking away from other parts fail to see that the fundamental building blocks of Kanji are being re-affirmed almost immediately in studying written and even oral work. Its like a positive feedback loop where the kanji reinforce other parts of study which reinforces your knowledge of the kanji. The sooner you can get into this positive feedback loop, the better. Obviously, there is a limit to this but 100-200 a day is not such a limit. I'm sure geniuses can do even better (possibly 3000 in a single day? in terms of writing/recognizing the character). As people have said, don't delimit the boundaries of human capacity too easily. Lots of people can do freaky things that defy the normal sense of capacity. Sir Richard Francis Burton, one my great favorites reportedly knew how to speak in about 29 languages (including European, African, Asian languages supposedly fluently) and known to write in a number of them. There a number of others who have supposedly done far more than that. When you compare doing a 100/day to people like that, I find it stimulating because what I'm attempting is miniscule in comparison. I am also kind of surprised that people are learning the Kanji before Hiragana which I believe to be even more fundamental to understanding than Kanji (in opening up the language). So, long story short, I will see how I stand in ten days after re-learning the 500 I did before and 500 new ones. -Saborkan 100 Kanji a day - kaldaka7 - 2012-06-12 5th day... up to 500! 100 Kanji a day - Tayfinch - 2012-06-12 Just finished reading all 17 pages (to date) of this topic. It's amazing how much passion, drama and RTK theory is packed into this one locale. Huge thanks go out to blackmacros and KanjiMood (and others) for their amazing stories and thoughts. I'm about to embark on my own Kanji Quest, and am hoping to maintain a 100 kanji/day pace. While this thread has gone in many directions, I feel it's still the right place to chronicle this journey. Even though I'm new to the community, I feel as though I've already started to get to know many of you through your posts, and hope you won't mind following my efforts. Today may be a light day (I receive my books later this morning and will be spending time familiarizing myself with the book's structure), but starting tomorrow (6/13/12) it's 100 kanji/day. : ) Thanks! 100 Kanji a day - meeatcookies - 2012-06-12 Good luck with it, i had too many breaks and went 100 per day sometimes. I never get more than 80-85% correct, even after a month from the time when i've added the last card. It's good that i dont care about it anymore, because i actually learn the kanji again when i start using it in sentences, and what really matter is learning how to write/distinguish them from rtk alone, while keywords are just an additional help to do it. Use the timeboxing for your reviews (maybe for learning new kanji too), it will prevent you from burning out in this pace. 20 mins of reviewing per session or something similiar. Good planning is the way to go, because it's (almost)impossible to do everything in one sitting. "divide and conquer" is the way to go with SRS and it will save you a lot of time. Be sure to create a good image of each story you use, without rushing with anything. 100 Kanji a day - kaldaka7 - 2012-06-12 Good luck, Tayfinch! 100 Kanji a day - Tayfinch - 2012-06-12 Re: Meeatcookies -- Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. SRS is my friend, and I'll remember your suggestions as I start. Just got my books! Came earlier than expected, so I'm going to try for my first 100! Woot. I'm interested in posting and receiving feedback regarding my study plan for 100/day. I based this off of what I gleamed were best practices from the thread history. For those that have successfully done 100/day, I'm interested in your unique perspective. A little context, first: I'm a university student taking the summer off. Thus I have a lot of time to devote to studying nihongo. I'm a morning person and want to work on establishing a morning routine. That said, here is my initial plan: 6/12/2012 Initial Study Regimen A. Break up 100 Kanji / Day into 4 sets of 25 with an evening review a. The first set will be in the AM before breakfast b. The second set will be in the AM after breakfast c. The third set will be in the afternoon d. The fourth set will be in the late afternoon e. The evening review will happen before bedtime and will cover all new kanji B. Morning routine is paramount a. Get up early b. Eat a little yogurt c. 25 new kanji d. Breakfast (Protein) e. Bike Ride (3-6 miles) f. Get ready for day g. 25 new kanji C. Reviewing will take on an increasingly big role a. First review of day - Digitize yesterday's kanji to Anki b. Other reviews - Break up all Anki/RTK reviews into tolerable sizes. Most important of all = Don't get behind. 100 Kanji a day - Sebastian - 2012-06-12 Tayfinch Wrote:C. Reviewing will take on an increasingly big roleWhy won't you use this site? I haven't read much of this thread, so probably other people have said this, but some advice I'd give from my point of view would be: - Divide your work in time, rather than number of kanji. That way you will have more certainty on your daily schedule, and get a better sense of the pace you're progressing at. - When I had an intensive period of RTK, I used nested timeboxes. A small timebox to allocate the time you can afford spending on each kanji, and a big timebox for putting a reasonable limit to your sessions. - Make good use of the stories available here, they can save you lots of time and teach you a lot, besides of giving you a lot of fun while studying. - When reviewing on this site, I never study all my kanji together, but I do it separately for each column. That way I have a better sense of progress, and I can get more strict with myself when I review kanji that are on the columns to the right. May the primitives be with you. 100 Kanji a day - Tayfinch - 2012-06-13 Re: kaldaka7 - Thanks! You, too! You're a big example, too, so please keep me up to date with your progress and any tips you develop! Re: Sebastian - Oh, I guess I forgot to put that above! I love the site and am going to use it along with anki. : ) DAY 01 (6/12) Update: Since I got the books in the afternoon I didn't get a full 100 - only got 65 in. That said, they all went very well and my review was 92%. DAY 02 (6/13) Putting 65 kanji and stories into anki took longer than I expected (~1 hour) this morning. I'm realizing anki-ifying in the morning is going to take away from both my reviewing and new kanji time, so I'm thinking I'll replace my final evening review with input-today's-kanji-into-anki. I think that'll be just as good, since I'll be reviewing them at the same time. 100 Kanji today! (and, if I can, I'm going to attempt 135 to get me back on track with even 100s) Wish me luck. 100 Kanji a day - Fallacy - 2012-06-13 @TayFinch Why are you putting kanji into Anki? There is a deck for that already. Or you could use this site which also has it done for you plus lists of top rated stories. 100 Kanji a day - Tayfinch - 2012-06-13 Re: Fallacy - I know that, but as with many things I find I better absorb and appreciate the material I generate myself. : ) It took me years in college before I learned that about myself. 100 Kanji a day - Fallacy - 2012-06-13 Tayfinch Wrote:Re: Fallacy - I know that, but as with many things I find I better absorb and appreciate the material I generate myself. : ) It took me years in college before I learned that about myself. While I am certainly the same way, I wonder how long you'll keep that up. Not to be a debbie downer, but it's going to be hard spending all this time on Japanese. Your reviews will get pretty up there and it will be very time consuming. In my personal experience, I would spend about 3 hours in the morning before school and about an hour in the evening, every day. Needless to say, I got burnt out (rather quickly, at 636 kanji). For both our sakes' though, I hope this doesn't happen to you. Good luck! 100 Kanji a day - Tayfinch - 2012-06-13 Re: Fallacy -- Hm... Well, you've got me thinking. That could very well be true. The only advantage I see in it is being able to put my own stories into the cards. Thanks for the experience and pro tip. 100 Kanji a day - Tayfinch - 2012-06-14 @ kaldaka7 - Hope you're doing well! @ Fallacy - I realized that you were right about anki. I'm going with the pre-made deck. So far I haven't found missing my stories to be any real loss. Thanks for your advice. DAY 02 UPDATE - 100 new kanji! No sweat! Time restraints kept me from catching up to the even 200, but sooner than later I'll make the even X00s. Anki Review %: 91.1 Starting my reviews on RevTK today as well. Yay for more reviews... 100 Kanji a day - Fallacy - 2012-06-14 Tayfinch Wrote:@ kaldaka7 - Hope you're doing well!I'm glad I was able to help a fellow member. The deck is just too convenient seeing as how they're all hyperlinked to the kanji on this site. |
