Does it make sense to slowly replace keywords with Japanese words containing the "essence" of the keyword? This will usually be kunyomi readings of the kanji.

For example, I was thinking of replacing "shallow" with "asai" for 浅, or "homecoming" with "kaeru" for 帰. What do you think?

Doesn't the question then become the answer?

(If you see what I mean...)

There are 2 currents here in this forum.

One is called Japanese keywords. Just search for it a bit and you'll find the related threads.

The other is just to keep reviewing RTK while you add sentences to your SRS. Eventually the RTK reviews will diminish to insignificant amounts.
I use the second one, but I really can't say it is better, I just like it more.

imo it's pointless and a bit of a cop out. Just read Japanese your level (or n+1).

It won't even help you learn the words any better because English:Japanese isn't 1:1. Some English words have more scope than the Japanese word you might use and vice versa. The only way to have it remotely accurate is to do everything by hand. Browser plugins = fail.

Using this method you'll possibly end up memorizing nonsense grammar.
Me and my friend went to the store yesterday and bought five apples.

Watashi to watashi-no tomotachi itta to the mise kinou to katta go ringo.

Plugins are fail.
I'm going back to my house now.

Watashi'm itteiru ushiro ni watashi-no ie ima.

Just because you are doing it wrong doesn't mean there isn't a good way to do it.
The japanese keywords project has its value. You should take a look before judging it so quickly.

what are you babbling about Jarvik? I think he meant gradually replace English RTK keywords with japanese words of similar meaning for reviewing RTK. Perhaps you were thinking of that plugin to replace english words in text with kanji?

Yeah I did mis-assume (I think?). All too often it's the plug-in theory though Big Grin There is also that plugin to replace English words with Japanese words and produces total gibberish.

I do support replacing keywords in your SRS with Japanese words as soon as you can.

He did most all the work for this. Download the spreadsheets and when you learn a Japanese word, replace your RTK with the Japanese. I add sentences with mine too for fun.
