Not remembering without the story... - meatloaf - 2009-04-03

Hello,

I'm sure it's in here. You know, someone asking about this. However, the solutions may be dated and there may be new ways to help me that I would like to know!

So, my possible concern. I'm past the 50% mark on RTK1. At in or around the 1100 mark. I do about 30 new a day, with an average review that seems to be about 80-120 depending upon the mature card returns.

What I feel is an issue is that there are not many mature cards that I see that I can not get right from the story. Seems like a crazy issue huh?! Card anywhere in the deck. I can read the story and know the kanji.

I'm not recalling many from memory though. I am getting these all right from the story, so my options in anki for say a card in the 200-400 range is easily 30 days to 2 months. So, I am not seeing the cards enough for me to try to guess it without the story.

Any thoughts?

If you look at the story, fail the kanji. You need to enforce getting from the keyword to the story, and the best way to do that is fail and let the SRS schedule the cards so that you memorize going from the keyword.

I thought that too. Seemed the logical way. I already add 30 a day and have about a 100 to review. I have a feeling that will skew my numbers very high a day. Was just trying to see if this is common.

Would you think it better to halt the new and try to catch-up the old ones or just grunt it all with 30 new a day?

I know for sure I can dedicate 4-5 hours most days if need be to just straight kanji study! I can only hope it's enough!

You should fail the kanji. It appears to me that you are going too fast for your own good.
Slow down, and get better results then progress.

I have anki set up so that I click the word "story" underneath the keyword, and it displays the story. If I look, but still remember the kanji, I just mark it as hard and move on. A few repetitions later, and I won't have to look at the story.

Thanks to all who replied.

I already white out the story in Anki, but notice I seem to dive for it anyway. That seems to be the issue to me after the insight here on the replies I got. Looks like I have a lot of failing to do!

Main primitives I see a lot like heart, each, every, state of mind, those are a breeze! Makes more sense now as to why. Even if it's not that particular card, I can read that one word in the story and know exactly what it is. So, more reps for the win!

Thankfully, not feeling overwhelmed at all about having to fail many of these cards again. Better to do it now at 1100 and not at 2042!

If you really want the story on the answer side, you can also write it normally and paint it white so you have to select the text with the mouse to see it. Not as fancy as plugins etc but certain to work.

yeah that is what I did, it works fine since I theoretically never need to see the story, and if I do I fail the card.
