... 然 frame 241 which means "sort of thing." I don't quite understand the meaning of sort of thing; what does it mean?

然 has two main meanings:
1. Correct
2. In a certain state

The "sort of thing" comes from the second or maybe both.

Consider 自然
自然 is often translated as nature. Nature is what remains in an unchanged (natural) state. The 然 indicates the state.

It's a very abstract concept, hard to explain. The only way to understand is to learn Japanese words using it, such as:

敢然 - Boldly ("Daring" + "Sort of thing")
未然 - before it happens, previously ("Not yet" + "Sort of thing")
寂然 - desolate ("lonely" + "sort of thing")

As you can see, "sort of thing" means something along the lines of "like so" and "in that case".

I like that "sort of thing" (one specific thing among many others) or you can read it like "things of this/that kind".

It means exactly what it says, "that sort of thing".

The way I remembered it was flesh of dogs being cooked. Just remember that "That sort of thing" doesn't happen anymore since we are in the 21st century. So the whole kanji represents the "sort of thing" ,which is dog flesh being cooked over a fire, that doesn't happen anymore. If it doesn't help then just close your eyes for about a minute and think of all the primitives and eventually a story will form.
Hope it helps Smile

While the concept is abstract, the cooked chihuahua image was enough to make it stick.

If you look up the etymology, you might be surprised at how much it resembles Heisig's story.

Okay so I think I'm grasping the concept it feels like everybody is pointing in the direction that it is a "specific sort of thing" that makes whaterver that is to the left of the kanji feels like the adjective version of the original word. I'm not sure if this is correct but seems close.

I liked how Sprutnik chose the words "that kind" which makes it feel like it describes a more specific word.

On hundreds if not thousands of Japanese products: 天然 something or other. Meaning 'natural' or 'natural type', (also referring to natural versus man-made, like a natural harbor). So 'sort of' is right smack on the money, in my book, as one primary meaning. I usually think of 'type', which seems to be an available substitute as a keyword.

Oh Wally put it into words I kind finally understand when he meant "type." Smile
