Question about Kanji In Context - freedomtime - 2009-02-28
Hi all. I've been following the SRS method for a while, using Basic Kanji books 1&2, then intermediate 1&2, and now I've finally finished them. But this only takes you to about 1100 kanji so there's still quite a few to go, but as there are no more books in the series, it seems the only thing to do is to pick up another book and follow it through only entering in to the SRS ones you haven't learnt yet.
So I thought I'd try Kanji In Context having heard good things about it and it's example sentences. I found the first kanji I hadn't studied in only lesson 2! (4 books of kanji and they don't teach you 机??) Anyway, the main positive I'd read about KIC, the example sentences, don't seem to have any in that lesson for 机. Flipping through the book, this often seems the case: there will be some kanji in a particular lesson which have no example sentence to go with them. If this is the case, how can you even trust that the ones that do have sentences are giving you all the important readings anyway? Why would they include a kanji in a lesson but then not tell you anything about it?
My question is for anyone who's used this books for SRS-ing (or at all): am I missing something? How can you ensure using this book you're picking up firstly all the kanji and secondly all the neccesary readings for that kanji? Any advice would be much appreciated!

I don't really see how you'd need an example sentence for 机. If you really want one, you could try google or one of the many dictionaries that are online.

It doesn't really matter what the kanji was though. 机 was pretty trivial granted, but if you have to double check that each kanji actually has sentences to go with it and if not go and find them somewhere else, is there any advantage to having the book in the first place? Just thought someone who'd used the book might have come across this before.

Good question. I was looking at KiC as well, and I never did figure out why it left some kanji out of the example sentences.
I agree with playadom-- use one of the online dictionaries, or you could try iKnow's sentence repository.

I tried KiC books 1 and 2. Are there four books now? Anyway, I was not impressed by them as time went on. There's darn few example sentences. It does have a portion dedicated to life in Japan and the kanji that goes with it. Now that I liked. Problem is, that's a small portion that does not justify the price tag. The other things it offers is offered by most other kanji books (strokes, readings, sample words).
To be honest, the practice books for KO2001 are better in that ITS FREE online, and are pretty indepth.

Ah, crap! I wish I had known about this when I was plowing through volume 1. I hope they finish the one for volume 2 soon. These worksheets look pretty neat. (And you can't beat free.) They actually look like something good to study before stuffing the sentences from the main text into Anki, to help you remember the compounds and such.
Pretty handy stuff.
