Anki backups the easy way - stoked - 2009-02-26 Quick tip for Anki backups: 1. Install dropbox: https://www.getdropbox.com/ 2. Move all your Anki decks to the Dropbox directory Dropbox will do the rest and you will never have to worry bout Anki backups again... Anki backups the easy way - nac_est - 2009-02-26 Doing that. And loving dropbox. Anki backups the easy way - hknamida - 2009-02-26 Just downloaded it, and I like it already. Anki backups the easy way - mentat_kgs - 2009-02-26 I'm using subversion. So far it is working very well. =D Anki backups the easy way - stoked - 2009-02-26 Hmkay, so maybe this wasn't the best idea? ![]() It's kind of uploading non-stop while reviewing... :\ Edit: Or does it only upload the diffs and not the full file? Then it's fine! Anki backups the easy way - nac_est - 2009-02-26 Actually, I don't know. I use Dropbox to backup my media folder, not the actual deck (not every time, at least). I use the Anki synchronisation for that. How long does it take to do the upload (the little blue ball)? If it's only 1-2 seconds then it's uploading only a small part. I think it's that way, because it says like "72.9 KB changed", while the whole file is 6.4 MB Anki backups the easy way - stoked - 2009-02-26 Okay, it only uploads the diffs. So, yeah! also, I think it only uploads when you close Anki or the editor. Not sure though. Anyway, it works. Good stuff!

Then it's fine!Yep, I think they call it "delta syncing", only the differences are transfered. Anki backups the easy way - bombpersons - 2009-02-26 Wow, this is awesome! I already lost my Media folder once, with this I won't be able to =D Great that it works on Linux too ! Anki backups the easy way - wccrawford - 2009-02-26 I don't really want them to have my files, so I'm not a fan of this. If it just kept references to what files had changed, that would be more my style... And have my computers directly connect to each other to do the actual transfer. It eliminates some of the redundancy and usefulness, but nobody else has my files that way. It's not like you have nude pictures of yourself in those files
Anki backups the easy way - woodwojr - 2009-02-26 You don't? An entire section of my Anki deck is dedicated to memorizing what I look like naked! ~J Anki backups the easy way - Copycatken - 2009-02-26 Doesn't Anki already make backups of decks? What's the difference between using this dropbox method and Anki's backups? Anki backups the easy way - Tobberoth - 2009-02-26 Copycatken Wrote:Doesn't Anki already make backups of decks? What's the difference between using this dropbox method and Anki's backups?Anki only backups the actual decks, not the media. If you use pictures and sound, those will not show up on other computers. Anki backups the easy way - resolve - 2009-02-26 Using this for the media is fine, but it's a bad idea for the actual decks. The Anki decks should never be copied while they're open, or you risk data corruption. Anki backups the easy way - anon6969 - 2009-02-27 Oh goodness! I use DropBox but I never thought to use it to sync Anki Media files!!! Anki backups the easy way - stoked - 2009-02-27 Okay guys, be careful with this: http://groups.google.com/group/ankisrs/browse_thread/thread/18f9b50bab0de583 Anki backups the easy way - nac_est - 2009-02-27 The user called "resolve" on this forum is the actual creator of Anki (the same who answered your questions on the anki forum), so he's pretty reliable
Anki backups the easy way - stoked - 2009-02-27 Uhh, hehe. Well I didn't know that.
Anki backups the easy way - bombpersons - 2009-02-27 Is their a way to have an anki deck get it's media from somewhere else than filename.media? If I keep my media folder in my dropbox, and my anki deck elsewhere, how can I get the media to show on cards? Anki backups the easy way - Nomad - 2009-02-27 bombpersons Wrote:Is their a way to have an anki deck get it's media from somewhere else than filename.media?I'm having exactly the same problem, I kept the media folder inside the Dropbox folder and moved the deck outside Dropbox in order to prevent any corruption. I'm not being able have the media show up in my cards now, which is the piece that's missing for an otherwise perfect Anki/Dropbox match. Resolve, is there any hope for us?
Anki backups the easy way - stoked - 2009-02-27 Symbolic links! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbolic_link ![]() It's easy on linux. I don't know about windows though... Anki backups the easy way - resolve - 2009-02-28 Doesn't dropbox give you the ability to prevent some files from being synced? Anki backups the easy way - bombpersons - 2009-02-28 Yay for Linux! =D Thanks, that solved my problem =D |
