Started RememberingTK1 3 weeks ago and ReviewingTK yesterday. Both fantastic!
My question, I thought the magic number was 2042. What is 3007 all about?

When you are done with RTK. And RTK2 to learn all the onyomi, then you do another 1000 kanji in RTK3, because even if the 1900-odd joyou kanji are "officially enough to be literate" in japanese, it isn't. So another book with additional kanjis was made. But ignore it for now. Focus on your 2042 kanjis and you will have a lot easier learning to read when you have to look up 1 in 20 kanjis perhaps, instead of 3 out of 4

Those extra kanji comes from RTK3.
In RTK1 you learn how to write the 2042 kanji Japanese people learn in school (+ some extra kanji). RTK2 teaches you how to remember the readings of the kanji in the first book. However there's still some common kanji that you don't learn in those two books. That's why RTK3 was written. You learn about 1000 more kanji, both writing and then reading in one book.

But, to be more encouraging, you don't have to worry about RTK III kanji. True, you will find non-RTK I kanji in almost every page of Japanese books, but when you have covered RTK Volume I, you have 95% of the common kanji. The other ones you can learn easily using the same method, on your own, as you come accross them, without going through another 965 kanji in specific order.
When you have completed RTK I, it will all seem much easier, and you mayconsider doing RTK III as a "hobby". Meaning, that it can be enjoyable to continue through RTK III, but at that point you already have 95% of your kanji covered for reading.

Thanks for the information. Like you say, for now I won't be worrying too much about RTK3! Still got around 1700 to go in RTK1...
