Level 2 scares a lot of people and Level 1 is unimaginable

At the rate I move at when I'm actively studying, all of JLPT4 is maybe a day or 2's worth of material.

Zero to 4kyu isn't quite a 2 day journey. However, time certainly wasn't against him after 16 months in Japan. He just had no interest in actually studying and no longer has any interest in the language whatsoever.
Waste of time and money.

50% on 2kyuu on every category sounds pretty good considering your condition.
And don't look at is as a failure, esgrove. It was a learning experience. This kind of test isn't like the usual ones in school. In school, they guarantee to have taught you everything on the test. The JLPT does pretty much the opposite. They refuse to tell you what's on the test and you have to rely on the guesses of others for your studying. Now that you've done it once, you know exactly what your weak and strong areas are and you can prepare yourself next time.

JLPT4 is 100+ kanji, 800+ words and quite a few of the basic patterns. Let's not forget that someone who is taking JLPT4 for the first time is a complete newbie so simply putting the words and kanji into an SRS won't be even close to enough, such a person wouldn't stand a chance in neither the 読解 nor the 聴解.

Yeah passed 3級 after approx. 1 year of studying from 0 zero japanese.
Thx to heisig i think i did pretty well on the writing section.

And that was before I started Heisig...who thinks 1級 is doable this year? I just got engaged to my Japanese boyfriend (!!) so even though I (we!!) will be heading back to the states in a few (or more...visa) months, I will have strong motivation to keep studying.

After a single year of studying japanese (well actually november 2007 to december 2008) I passed the 2KYUU 291 on 400 !!! Back then I thought I did poorly on the test....
there is no man happier than me on the whole earth right now .
From now on anyone willing to blaspheme against RTK , KO2001 and KM and Anki will have a fight to death with me : D (well maybe I won't be so adamant on KM .... it's good but it not like there aren't any other grammar book on the market... but fight to death for the previous book : no kidding)
N.B : for those of you bothered by my boasting, I'm really sorry , my bad .I don't intend to harm anyone ... it's just that I'm overcome by joy after all the effort . So I need to evacuate and send message to everyone I know .

I passed 2級. That's quite a big accomplishment for me considering 7 months before it I was bombing out on 3級 practice tests. I studied very hard, and I learned a lot of Japanese. It's really nice to know that I have a piece of paper to prove it.
I don't know my exact scores yet because I have to wait for my scores to be shipped from my Japanese university to my American university. In order to make things simpler I put my address down as the school I went to in Japan because my study abroad ended between taking the test and receiving the results. I asked the office worker who was in charge of that if he could open my results to tell me if I passed before sending them on to me here in the states.
After 4 years of lazy Japanese studying and 8 months of super serious 8 hours per day studying, it's nice to have something tangible that tells me I have a handle on this Japanese thing.

Back when I started studying up for 2級, the thing that motivated me was the amount of material I had no grasp of. I liked the game of trying to learn all of it in that short amount of time.

Last test, I would have bombed 4kyuu. This next test, I hope to know enough that I'd pass 2kyuu, but I'm uncertain enough about it that I'm not signing up. In fact, I really doubt it.
