RTK1 Flashcards - thecite - 2009-02-08

Is anyone willing to sell me their RTK1 flashcards on eBay for about $40 or less? I'd really appreciate it, I really want to buy them but they're so expensive to buy new, so a used pair would really suit me. Thanks.

I got a set for free from http://www.polarcloud.com/japanese. I looked at the commercially available set which you're right costs huge and I don't think they really add much to what I got gratis from the polar cloud guy. You can print out the file onto card stock pretty cheaply and then just add your own stuff in pen if you need to have the key words or clues or anything else on them. Check it out!

Surely you have some form of portable electronics with a screen? There are flashcard programs for almost everything these days and they are more convenient than paper.

I just used paper that would otherwise have been thrown out. Envelopes, the backs of flyers I got in the mail, etc.

Actually, unfortunately I haven't been able to figure out how to get my blackberry to display Japanese characters. I have a notebook, but it's a bit large and heavy and a little inconvenient to take with me when I am going shopping with my wife, or to look at a few cards sitting in the car, waiting to get on a plane, waiting to take off, etc....

It may be a generational thing, I'm 51 and I almost never text anybody and for me, emails are still for sending complete sentences. I like to read actual books made of paper and as for saving a tree, I can't really argue with that but on the other hand, my complete set used up less paper than 1 issue of the local daily newspaper and I don't subscribe to any printed newspapers or magazines so I don't feel too guilty about that. In any case, printing out the polar cloud set for yourself is still a pretty cheap alternative, and saves electricity too. Smile

The problem with having flashcards along is that you won't be able to SRS them, you'll just look at them over and over whenever you have the time. That will mess up the algoritm, making the SRS benefits weaken greatly for you.

You could probably get a primitive Leitner system going on with a couple of boxes and a calendar.

You could also print the flashcards using plain paper and carry them inside a card holder. That would be pretty primitive, but also pretty simple to use on the run.

Or you can put a sheet of paper into a a transparent plastic sheet protector and write with a whiteboard marker.
