Thanks a lot for your replies.
However, I am a bit worried about the overhead of installing Linux + Wine on my Mac just for the sake of using one single program !
I might try to see if I can use an account I have on a Windows server instead (if this does not require administrator privileges).

BTW, it could be worthwhile to add a link to these "instructions for Mac users" in the first post of this thread.

I've got a dumb question, and please forgive me if this has been asked already (I couldn't find it). The most recent deck I've decided to make is episode 1 of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Some of the cards weren't showing up, so I edited the subtitles via Aegisubs to remove characters like {, and now when I preview the deck in Subs2Srs it shows all the dialogue, I can see the screenshots and preview the audio just fine.

The problem arises when I try to import it into Anki. I have 366 facts (everything is in media folder, so Subs2Srs created it all), but Anki only imports anywhere between 253 and 257. What am I doing wrong? I've made plenty of decks before, but this one is giving me problems for some reason. Are the tags messed up? Does Anki just hate me?

Anki should give you a message at the end about what it did and did not import. What does that message say?

Are you using Advanced Subtitle options to strip out entries with fewer than x characters? Does your export file perhaps have a lot of entries that are just the symbol for music playing (♪♪~)? Anki will consider these duplicates and strip them out.

If you don't want to manually remove "{" at the start of lines, uncheck the "Remove Styled Lines" option in the Advanced Subtitle Options dialog. (If there are karaoke effects though, it is probably better to do the manual approach).

If you email me your tsv file and the appropriate log, I can probably help you. Also, what version of Anki are you using?

For some reason doing that fixed my problem. Thanks a lot!

Hi all, I would like to be able to make an Anki deck out of a Chinese video clip (say a news clip from youtube or youku) for which I do not have a subtitles file or timing info. The clips include subtitles embedded in the video (which I think you would refer to as 'hard subs').

The ideal card setup would be:
Q: [audio clip]
A: [corresponding screenshot including subtitle]

Is there any way to do this with subs2srs, given that I do not have a subtitles file with timing info? If not, what would you recommend?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm certain Subs2srs can not do this alone. Your still going to need a subtitle script and the audio clip.

Apparently there are ways to extract subtitles from youtube. I'm not sure what the format comes out as, you might have to convert it or manually retime it with Aegisub. It's not too hard to get a video/audio off of YouTube, just Google around for a solution on that.

Hi cb4960

It appears the template ( subs2srs_template.anki ) does not work with Anki 2 and needs to be updated.

Also when I import the .tsv into Anki 2 it doesn't seem to import the media along with it. The cards I created don't have sound or pictures.

The template won't work. Just use the TSV.

You have to move the media into your media folder in Anki 2. So assuming you're User 1 in Anki 2, move all of the subs2srs media into the folder Anki\User 1\collection.media. (This will be in My Documents if you're on Windows.)

Hmm... doing the above works for the sound, but the images still refuse to show up. The card just displays things like:
<img src="Kokurikozaka_1_0.01.44.164.jpg">

Make sure that the "Allow HTML in fields" option is checked in the Import dialog.

I'm going to release a new version of subs2srs later today with new Anki 2 templates and I'm going to update the help file with Anki 2 import instructions.

Ok that did the trick. I really appreciate the help cb4960 and gaiaslastlaugh Smile

Is there anyway capture2text can be integrated into subs2srs for dvd subtitles? or is just not accurate enough?

Check out: vobsub2text and Subtitle Edit.

Neither of these tools are very accurate though.

Hello,
Is there a way I can generate a tsv file with the lines for audio and snapshots without actually producing these media files (because I already have them, but I lost the tsv file)? Thanks!

Marzian Wrote:Hello,

Yes. Just cancel the processing once it starts extracting the media. A .tsv file will be left behind but none of the media will have been generated.

I'm having a weird problem...

I used subs2srs on the movie kokuriko zaka kara. This has bitmap subtitles. Now most of the the subtitles were successfully converted to png files.

But many of them (maybe 20-30%) while the png file is created, there is no image.

Eg.
Kokurikozaka_001_Stream_00_Subs1_008.16.76-008.18.35.png was created but its an empty image and the file size is only 118 bytes

Any ideas?

I was able to reproduce the problem that you are having with those subtitles. I'll see if I can determine what the problem is.

Edit:
OK, I think I found the problem. I have to add support for larger Blu-ray subtitles. Should be simple. Probably a fix release tomorrow.

Is there anyway to customize the export at all?

1) Ability to change the order every field is exported in.

2) Ability to set multiple leading and trailing lines to their own fields. I'd like to have them all concatenated together with line breaks. It's only a small bit of work to fix in a spreadsheet, but it's a hassle each time. It's also a bit confusing when you set several leading/trailing lines and you have secondary subs.

3) I'd also love the ability to go further and customize all of the secondary subs to be in it's own field. In a format, something like this:
Code:
[Leading1 Line
Leading2 Line
Leading3 Line]
Current Line
[Trailing1 Line
Trailing2 Line
Trailing3 Line]
Again, all stuff I can fix in post, but it's actually a lot of manual labor unless I take the time to write a script for this.
