Wow guys, that's a big encouragement for me! I memo about 30 kanjis daily O_o ONLY, I thought that was some good effort, now starting today until next sunday (when uni starts) I'm gonna work really hard on my Japanese 50 Kanjis + japanesepod101 or grammar , thnx guys, again!

I feel the same way when I watch anime, and a lot of my Japanese friends think that I won't get there (I can feel it, but they don't say it outright).

Within a year or so I'll be speaking to them in Japanese.

How can you memorize 50 kanji a day? How's that possible? Do you memorize the meanings/readings or just the kanji (considering you're studying from a book, if not, forget it)?

I'll start memorizing like 5 to 10 kanji a day and repeat the process with those same kanji during 3 days or so.

Maybe you have misunderstood what site you're on? If you use this sites SRS system and Heisigs book, you can learn as many kanji you want a day as long as you have the time. Several people on this site learned 100 kanji a day.

So I'm watching a movie in Japanese with Japanese subs. It's amazing.

I don't understand a single word but I love it. There's tons of kanjis floating around in the subs in high-speed and many of them look familiar. This is great. No idea what the movie is about though. Family drama or something? I'll keep watching. Fun! Smile

How can you not? Big Grin If you're on vacation you could easily do 200+ per day once you get your system worked out and a rhythm down.

I was doing 100-150 a day during my summer vacation with plenty of time for naps, messing around on the internet, videogames, cooking, cleaning, going out with friends & gf, a trip to Korea, climbing Mt. Fuji, JLPT study, Korean study, etc. If I cut out the naps I could have done more, but Osaka humidity saps my strength.

The hardest part with doing so many a day is doing the reviews. You get hundreds of expired cards per day. I just always woke up at about 5:30am, cooked breakfast for the girlfriend, cleaned up, did all my expired cards & failed cards from the previous day, then took a nap for a few hours.

I think a lot of people can't handle a fast pace because they just spend too much time doing prep work that isn't worth much. I never wrote the kanji at all when learning them (only during expired card reviews), I never wrote any stories down on paper or in the revtk system, I never spent much time making sure my stories were super good (if they sucked too much I'd end up failing the card and improving the story on the next review. the stories are meant to disappear soon after you start using the kanji, so why put so much effort into them?), I never did any drilling or anything before adding to revtk, etc. It took me maybe 30 seconds per kanji tops. Basically I put my faith in the SRS. I made smart use of time too. Since my study method was simple I could do it anywhere: waiting for a train, riding the train, standing in line to get onto a ride at USJ, etc. I do the same thing now for Anki cards. I rarely just sit down and go through them. I just do it in bits & pieces with my time that is normally wasted waiting (/w iAnki).

I think 200 a day is possible, depending on your method. Not sure what the benefit of comparing your pace to others is though. Just do your thing and keep going. You'll get there in the end, no worries.

A hundred Kanji a day? Maybe that's the kind of radical challenge I need. Otherwise this is going to stretch out forever and I'll end up giving up. But 100/day means RtK1 by the end of the month, RtK3 by mid March. Tempting...

(most of them suck at guitar, trust me I know... they post recordings )
make special note of the spectacular fail of one member regarding Kanji definition
(I'm taking the piss by the way with the topic... I don't really go on that forum much anymore and I know exactly what gets them wound up )

I don't draw or paint REALLY well yet, I'm always trying to learn

however to produce a piece of work that you're really proud of that's good enough for other people to like you have to work for HOURS and don't get all that much return for the MASSIVE amount of output.

However... The ability to cast images of whatever the hell you want onto a piece f paper and express all your ideas in a way that's visible to everyone is pretty awesome

I'm a more down to earth person. I wouldn't make "art" with my ability, I'd just sell my soul to advertisers or some corporation.

Like ぱそこん, which wouldn't get you very far here in an electronics shop, or even コンセント、which, if you don't know it and can't guess, is a wall outlet (shortened from concentric plug - which in English we shortened to plug)

And finally, I suppose, the fact that it's so absolutely different from English gives a great sense of wonder and accomplishment once I'm able to crack open the language. Neither French nor Chinese forces you to think in such a different way as Japanese does. I love the thought process in Japanese, and I get disappointed when I have to switch back into English.

So when I tell people I study Japanese for 6-7 hours a day, they say, "Wow, what a hard worker," and I'm like "No, I'm having the time of my life."
What a great motivational post! Thanks! Absolutely right, no other way to learn such hard language as Japanese if one is not motivated by passion. Now let's see if I find it in me to build up the effort to 6 hours a day. I know though that, if I do, a couple of years from know I'll be very proud looking back and will have no doubts that it was worth it
