These are some of the top words that appear on high school entrance exams. I snagged this from a 国語 teacher here and I made a quick spreadsheet because I figured people here might appreciate it. They are in order-- top is the most frequently appearing, bottom is the least (within this list).

The readings are probably all right and the definitions are quick and dirty from Progressive. Do your own research and use at your own risk.

The readings should all be fine, but I did catch a few typographical errors when I was typing in the definitions which is why I mentioned that an error or two might have slipped through.
These compounds are apparently just frequently appearing compounds on the reading areas of entrance examinations. I'm not sure if that means that they appear often in context, or if they just they're popular choices for 音読み reading questions. The source was unclear.

I finally got my listbuilder minimally working and this is what I have:

I'll be adding the sentences soon for the ones that already have sentences available. Also, some of the items (13 or 14 of them) had to be created. I got the definitions from EDICT. All the rest were already in iKnow in 1 form or another. There could be mistakes in some of those as I didn't check them.
Edit: I went ahead and selected some sentences since I don't know when I'll feel like it. The list is probably as ready as it's getting.

I have another (final list) of "top 100" kun-yomi words. I haven't had time to input these into a spreadsheet yet because I'm trying to get my Japanese anki deck in order today, but look for it soon.
I also asked the teacher about how they test these compounds and she showed me a book that had some information about it. Basically, on entrance exams they present a short phrase ”地震で荒らす" and the test-taker must write the correct reading for the underlined portion in the blank. So while they may appear in other context, these compounds specifically are frequently tested in the readings portion of the test.
