2 questions:

http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=2432

1) is such a thread possible? I mean, legally...
2) would it be appreciated or not?

If yes, I'll continue...

RTK1: One kanji, one picture discussion - playadom - 2009-01-16

It would probably be appreciated for all of the kanji that have keywords that are rare plants or obscure terms.
Other than that, I'm not really sure if people need pictures of the moon or of a scorpion for RTK1.

RTK1: One kanji, one picture discussion - stoked - 2009-01-16

Yeah, I see. I'm not sure if it's a good idea either, but then again why not. I'm also not sure if it's okay to make such a list from a copyright point of view...?! Uhhmm....

RTK1: One kanji, one picture discussion - woodwojr - 2009-01-16

In terms of the keywords, it's no more questionable than any other list that has them without express permission (how questionable that is is, in my not-dispensing-or-qualified-to-dispense-legal-advice opinion, thoroughly unknown and probably not very); with regard to the pictures, it depends entirely on what the licensing for them is (and possibly on the nature of the use). Anything licensed as free to use is, well, licensed as free to use, for example.

RTK1: One kanji, one picture discussion - stoked - 2009-01-16

Oh, I'm not worried about the pictures. They're CC-licensed so it shouldn't be a problem.

Just wondering about the content of the book...is it legally okay to present it in this form?

RTK1: One kanji, one picture discussion - ファブリス - 2009-01-16

Keywords are ok. James Heisig and the RtK publisher requested that the RevTK web site does not give explicit lists of primitives. Basically, so long as the method is covered in the book, and not online, it's fine.

Using Flickr images to illustrate keywords is a very interesting idea.

There will be too much work don't you think? I think it's a great initiative. I agree with playadom how about making themed lists? All the plants, the trees , the flowers... If someone feels like making such lists we can link them into another regrouping topic and I will be happy to sticky' em.

i've came accross this before.. it might be of some use: http://jgram.org/kanjipic/?x=random&grade=0

Pretty cool pics on the other thread stoked Smile

RTK1: One kanji, one picture discussion - Ben_Nielson - 2009-01-17

Yeah, I'm still unclear how much benefit they'd be... or, I should really say, I think they're of some benefit but I'm not sure it's worth the time that surely takes. Sure, for the first 100 or so it won't seem so bad.. but for 1000? 2000? 3000? Ouch.

Still, if it works for you, by all means!

But yeah, the pictures are really cool. heh...

Can you post images in the stories on this site? I can't help to think that'd be a better way to do this than on the forum...

RTK1: One kanji, one picture discussion - stoked - 2009-01-17

Thank you for your feedback guys!

I love both photography and kanji so I'll just do it as long as it's fun. I think it helps me quite a bit when using Anki, although I'm new to this app and have just started using it so I can't really know:

http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/3384/ankila1.png

Anyway, it's fun and there's no hurry. Even if it takes ages to complete this list, so what.

Maybe at the end I could share my picture enhanced Anki deck for RTK1 and reference the thread for the source of the picture. I think the CC license would allow that, not sure though. I'll look into it...

If you guys have suggestions for pictures or want to replace one, just tell me. Sometimes it's a bit hard to find one that matches the kanji, or the story, or at least one of the primitives.

We'll see how long I'll keep this up...for now I'll continue, that's for sure. Now it's bedtime though.

Nite nite everyone! Smile

The one for smoke is really good!

RTK1: One kanji, one picture discussion - AmberUK - 2009-01-19

I did try this for a while with some vocab I struggled with but its alot of work. I think that maybe for most people they could do it with words they struggle with. Sometimes when a word is said an image comes into your head but the actual meaning is slightly different or the primitives only lend themselves to a different meaning. In that case trying to get a new image in it might be useful to have a picture to help it get in there. Plus some words I just cannot get a picture in my head for.

RTK1: One kanji, one picture discussion - stoked - 2009-01-19

Hey Raichu, cool drawings! Smile

Could you upload 'em without the kanji by any chance? Showing the kanji is not optimal for Anki...

RTK1: One kanji, one picture discussion - playadom - 2009-01-19

Raichu, I like the one for 湖 -- that's one of my favorite stories. I get a rather nice mental image from that kanji.

I thought about a similar idea: pick a good menmonic for each kanji from this forum and make a little video, with the elements, the story and the key word, sound and animation. Ridiculously ambitious, I know. Probably a professional project, or for someone with lot's of free time, but it would very likely achieve RTK1&2 retention in record time. Like the difference between memorising a written book and memorising little movies.

Very cool! Thanks for posting these.

That would be such a mission, but so awesome.

Oh my crap.
OH MY CRAP.

I have lots of free time!
And I have the tools necessary for this!
THIS SOUNDS EXCELLENT.

You're most welcome. Yes, I do plan on finishing this. It's a bit of a crazy task but if I could supply a picture enhanced Anki deck by the end of, say...uhhh...August '09 that would be cool. I see no benefit in rushing through RTK1 as fast as possible so I'll take it easy. The thing is that I'm not learning for university or for an exam or something but just for fun so there's no hurry.

Btw, cool idea with the movies. Go for it guys! Smile

RTK1: One kanji, one picture discussion - Hashiriya - 2009-01-21

this is a great list man, keep up the good work... you could even make an iKnow list with these, the place where the example sentences go would work to put the stories on... i'm sure that would be really time-consuming though...

RTK1: One kanji, one picture discussion - HerrPetersen - 2009-01-22

Honestly I thought you would give up slightly above a hundret or so - but seeing at what pace you are going I changed my mind: Great job - 1/6th done! Go marine!

I wish I hadn't studied these kanji yet. It looks great to study like this. Can't you start with RTK3?Smile

It would be very helpful especially when getting lost in the trees木 in RTK3 if Stoked gets that far Cool

Stoked and Phauna need a battle to the death to see who gets to be 魚
