What do you think of Anki's timeboxing? - zazen666 - 2009-01-11

How is it working for your guys?

I dont think I am really using it, nor paying attention to the start up screen so much.

Here is how I would timebox before, after reading about it on AJJATT:

I always set a clock for 20 mins.I never look at the number of cards I have left while reviewing, cause it is distracting.(I drag anki down so I dont have to see it) In the last five minutes, I take a quick look to see how many cards I have left and try to burn thru as many as possible in that time. Then I take a break and go for another 20.

So I had two ideas for timeboxing:

1. Set a clock for xxx amount of time, and have a pop up clock in the last xxx amount of mintues that does a count down. So you could have the study time set at 20mins, that in the last five you would get a count down clock, kind of as a boast of motivation near the end of a sesion.

or better yet...

2. Wouldnt it be ideal if you could set up your timeboxing to give you a pop up in the last, say 50 cards (adjustable) and a message that says "50 cards left, see how fast it takes you to finish!" And then after that, some numbers showing how long it took you to get thru 50 cards today v.s. yesterday?

feedback?

I personally think its great as before when i tryed timeboxing i would often go over the amount of time set for myself which goes against the whole point of it but now that it stops you after your alloted time its like a game to see how many i can get done in 10 minutes for example, i personally seem to work much more effiently when timeboxing than i do when not as i get distracted easily it keeps me focused.

So for me personally its a god send.

I like it a lot. Never tried the technique before, but I'm definitely going to use it for RTK as well, just with a clock.

I don't use it, don't need it.

I didn't try it on Anki yet since I'm still going through RtK, but the technique seems to work pretty well when use it on my Kanji reviews with an online stopwatch. Once I get through the kanji, I'll give it a try.

Just got done using it for a 45 minute time frame. While reviewing, I thought, "Let's take a look at the RTK forum... oh wait, I'm on a time limit!" It's kinda sad that I need timeboxing to help me refrain myself, but 13 years of public school will do it that kinda thing to you, right?

I have about 50 something cards left to review after the 45 minute session. I'm always on top of finishing all cards in one session, so I feel like a negligent father or something (...女性だけど). まあいっか。すぐ慣れるね。

Same as Jarvik7-- don't use it, don't need it. I review whenever I can. I was looking for a way to disable it (couldn't find one), so I just set it to 3600 minutes.

Just set the timer to 0.

Is that "Show study options on startup?" I was a bit confused about that.

what do you think it should say? perhaps 'on deck load'?

I like how it's been integrated into Anki.

Well, I was just confused about the whole thing how "study options" = timeboxing, and how it operated. I suspected as much, but I wasn't sure.

I wasn't too sure what to do with the study options page, if 0 meant 0 or unlimited. Because if you want 0 new cards, you put in 0, and you get 0 new cards. But if you want unlimited new cards, you put in an absurdly high number. So I wasn't completely sure what to do with the minutes thing, and I wasn't sure that simply not having it show up didn't mean that it wouldn't manifest itself in the background. I think it's the sort of thing that can be solved by making it clearer. Like "Enable Study options/Timeboxing." If I saw that, then I would know right away that if I wanted to disable it, I would merely have to uncheck it.

I also wasn't sure exactly how to read the data on the study options page. I'm guessing a "rep" is a card viewed and evaluated?

I think timeboxing is a great idea for people who need it. I'm just not one of them. Big Grin

Say Timeboxing? Big Grin and keep the amount of new cards separate or maybe just make each field more obvious what there use is.

Yup, basically how many cards you've done today.

I don't really know what this is. My Anki started to point blank refuse any new updates a while ago for some reason.

But, after studying I will hover the mouse over the clock thing to check to see how long it took to answer each card. If it's below 30 seconds I'm happy. That's pretty much the aim I go for each time I study.

The screen is not just for timeboxing

What do you think of Anki's timeboxing? - resolve - 2009-01-12

virtua: download the latest installer instead of using the automatic update

I love it. I've been using another program to timebox my Anki sessions, but now I don't have to. ♡

It's called "Stop it!". I still use it when cooking, working out and other stuff where a timer is useful.

Hey resolve, this is off topic but, is there a way to pause audio? Or will there be.
