Best summer climates in Japan - bodhisamaya - 2009-01-10

The U.S. dollar dropped to 90yen this week. It should drop even lower as the jobless numbers are predicted to rise further in January. Working in Japan back in 2007, my 100yen bought $1.20. That 300,000yen/month teaching job I had now pays about $1,000/month more than it did back then. I was planning on moving back in maybe two years but the US economic free-fall may send me back by this summer.

I previously lived in the Kansai area of Shiga-ken, Nara-ken and Kyoto but the summers there were too hot and sticky. I am looking into maybe Sapporo or Nagano this time but wondering about other possibilities. What are some of the nicest summer locations that people have been to?

Personally I didn't find Tokyo all that bad (and I come from Sweden, you're from Hawaii. You should be able to take some heat).

Sapporo is a pretty nice town so if you find a job there, why not? Overall though, I found Hokkaidou a nice place to travel, not to live... but both Sapporo and Hakkodate are nice places, if you're not planning to live there too long, both would be great choices.

The temperature in Hawaii during the summer is only 3-4 degrees Celsius warmer in summer than winter. There is always the ocean or a waterfall to cool off in if it does get to humid for me. Also it is rare for anyone to wear a suit in Hawaii. Even CEOs wear Aloha shirts and shorts. During the summer in the Kansai area, I would have to take a change of shirts with me to work because the one I would wear in transit would be soaked in sweat by the time I got there.

the us dollar drops to 90 yen quite often lately, not just recently... i have the currency gadget on windows vista so i watch it everyday... you guys have heard that they are shutting down all the Circuit City stores recently too right? it's getting crazy >_< luckily i have a high demand job in America right now (i'm a nurse) so at least i can feel a little more secure...

EDIT: i remember when i went to 岩手 the weather was really nice there during the summer... it was one of the most beautiful places i had ever been... i even went up to the top of 岩手山, almost no foreigners were there...
