Recording Audio to Audacity - kmoeini - 2009-01-03

Hi guys,

I'd like to record the audio from FNN News to audacity, but I don't know how to get a clear recording...I have a built-in mike on my laptop that picks up external noise in addition to the stuff I am trying to record, so I was wondering what settings you guys use?

Just set that pulldown menu next to the speaker/mic sliders to 'What U Hear' and hit record and it will record your sound card....

Edit: Oh, did you mean you watch the news on your television machine? That didn't occur to me. I've never had a microphone on my computer, so I'm clueless in that regard. ;p

Here's a tutorial on removing noise, but I guess you could have found this with Google too: http://www.geeks.com/techtips/2006/techtips-10dec06.htm

Try "Mono Mix" (or "Stereo Mix" if you're capturing stereo) in the pull-down menu on the toolbar in Audacity (where it should currently say "Microphone").

I've found audacity to be bit of a pain, and on vista it doesn't really work at all. However I found a free utility that does it, Freecorder toolbar. It's a toolbar so it's a bit annoying but it is extremely easy to use.

Just click record, it won't start recording until sound comes out of the speakers. Then start up your FNN and press stop after, name the clip and you're done. Of course go into the options and choose your formats when you use it the first time.

It's almost designed to rip audio from browsers although it can rip it from other things as well. It also saves you from opening another app to rip something.

It works fine here. I'm with vista.

Thanks for the help, guys.

nest0r, no, I was talking about recording it through the Internet from the website. Thanks for the link, though, I've recorded a bunch of stuff for my dad from his old cassettes, so that information could be useful.

phauna, I tried freecorder, and it's great. Thanks.

I'm also using Vista, and according to the help on Audacity, the pulldown menu on the input selector is greyed out when using Vista, so you need to use the audio i/o tab in the preferences to select your input. My stereo mixer was disabled in Vista, so I had to go to Sound in the Control Panel and enable that first. Now it works great.

Thanks again, guys.
