学校が始まるまでに友達に会いに大阪へ行きます。

i was able to understand everything in this sentence except for that に after 会い。 could it be there to mark why i will go to 大阪? many thanks to anyone that help.

Something like that, yes.

友達に会いに大阪へ行きます would give you "I 行くed to 大阪 to 会う a 友達"

thanks just needed to make sure before i added a wrong translation. thanks again! btw i liked that ending part haha made it a lot easier to understand.

Are you talking about to an SRS? It's generally not the best idea to add translations of your own.

Just take out the 大阪へ part, and you'll get 友達に会いに行きます. Going to meet a friend.

That's a very common and basic grammar structure.

gohan wo tabe ni restoran he itta. - We went to the restaurant to eat.
eiga wo mi ni itta. - We went to watch a movie.

Another common one I use with my girlfriend constantly:
ima ne ni ikanakya - I have to go to sleep now.

Verb stem + ni = "With the objective of....".

The grammer rule is ます-stem ＋に＋movement verb. The ます-stem denotes the main reason for your movement.

友達の家へ遊びに行きます。- I am going to my friend's house to play.
写真を撮りにきました。- I came to take photos.
