I don't think culture is at the root of these differences (which are thus relatively superficial), hence my explanation which is universally applicable in a fine-grained way. But that's just my humble opinion.

It's funny though to see how 'fan service' has been normalized per demographic/genre and requires certain formulaic renderings.

Like in Bakuman: http://www.mangareader.net/219-43691-13/bakuman/chapter-68.html

nest0r Wrote:Elfen Lied creeped me out in the 'bad' sense of creepy; I appreciate creatively depicted action/disturbing violence etc. when it's indiscriminate in a sense in terms of 'real life' issues, and I think this is fairly common. There's something universal and abstracted about it that allows for a kind of Keatsian negative capability. Or when it's discriminatory but contextualized within the story and goes somewhere with that, does something with it beyond superficial engagement.

But in some media and I think Elfen Lied is exemplary, perversions/sexualized elements tend to operate on a surface level that feels masturbatory/offering a 'service' for the audience (a 'fanservice' if you will), and it connects to inbuilt gendered/sexual biases in society.

I don't think representations of sex and sexuality in any medium has managed to reach the baseline of creativity and egalitarianism when it's good or blanket generic incompetence when it's bad that violence has and thus I put extra sensitivity and criticism into those aspects of media on an aesthetic and principled level; but, I'm confident that it will evolve as long as people hold themselves to higher standards be it for mass or elitist consumption (and as long in the meantime that it's not 'thrown out with the bathwater').
I completely agree that not only can something be both grimdark and gratuitous, but it can often be gratuitous because it's grimdark. This becomes apparent after reading some doujinshi, if regular anime and manga isn't quite enough to get the point across.

Have you seen any of the pink films? I haven't, but they're on my list of things to check out at some point. They might be a bit more on the sophisticated porn for mature adults side.

Pinku eiga highjack!

I've seen Tandem (Sato Toshiki). It wasn't even porn, but erotic (like most pinku eigas are I think). But it was really an enthralling experience: pro directing, nice acting, and the inimitable Japanese touch. I really had forgotten cinema could be arousing, in a suggestive way (if you've seen the short movie "the Hand" from Wong Kar Wai (in the full length "Eros" (a movie like Destricted)), you'll see what I mean).

EDIT: and +1 for Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt!

I seem to know so little about so many things, Japanese film just being another one. I have to get around to watching some pinku eiga at some point. It sounds pretty cool.

And yeah, I've apparently been trying to get this thread off track for a while now. Mission successful? I think so.
