I play! Or plan to, anyway, though I can't find the energy lately. Only at my club, I'm not much for tournaments. I'm a member of the go club in Eindhoven, and my level is about 9th Kyu.

Playing go never made me want to learn Japanese though, to be honest. I really got motivated however when I got into anime as a hobby much later on.

Go is a strategy game that was developed in Asia. It's a game in the same league of difficulty as chess (though since it has much more possible moves, AI hasn't really moved into decent strength play yet, so some people claim it's more difficult than chess, but I think that's a matter of taste).

According to known history, it first appeared in China. It then transferred to Japan, where it became really big. The Japanese developed the game to a serious extent, and dominated the world of go for ages. The last decade, however, the Chinese and especially the Koreans are making a big comeback. There are a lot of go professionals in these countries, and important go matches get much publicity in these countries, like being shown on TV with comments from other pro's.

I'm sure there are a lot of good sites on go, the one I usually visit is http://gobase.org. You can get more info there if you like.

i mostly decided to learn japanese for anime, manga, h-games and games, but i want to read japanese go-books as wel.

astridtops made a fair description what go is about.
but in ore detail go is a board game, where the aim it to SUROUND more territory then your opponent, its a land grabing game of sorts.

unlike many other strategy games like chess and checkers where where the aim is to reduce the pieces of your opponent, you start with an empty board of 19x19 grids where the aim is to build.

there is a manga and anime called hikaru no go that deals with this game, go check it out maybe you like it!

This topic reminds me of the movie CHA no AJI

I let you guess the title from the kanji meanings (practice, practice.. ;p )

茶の味

...in which a student learns Go just so he can join the local Go club and play with pretty girl played by Anna Tsuchiya Smile

Great movie btw.

Hikaru no Go got me interested in it...but I haven't played since last year. I had a Hikaru no Go video game but it was in Japanese so I didn't really grasp the rules -_-;
It's fun and addictive, but it was just a phase, I guess. I bet I could start agian, though^^

I saw this movie a month or 2 ago and it is definitely one of the best movies I've seen lately, I would even say it's a must see! But this movie is probably better known under its English title "The taste of tea" (I didn't know the Japanese title so I had to look it up just to confirm that we are talking about the same movie Tongue).
