All About Particles: A Handbook of Japanese Function Words

and

How To Tell The Difference Between Japanese Particles

Same author, similar subject. Are they the same book? Both are relatively cheap and I can get both (brand new) from the same seller. Is one better than the other, or would it be beneficial to have both?

The former is a handbook, almost a dictionary, of particles.

The latter is more of a contrast-and-compare, highlighting when you would use this one rather than that one. It has a couple of quizzes at the end of each chapter.

I see. In that case, I may consider getting both as they may complement one another.

Are you sure you won't be wasting money? (by getting both I mean)

Those are both small books right? You might want to check this one too: "A dictionary of Japanese Particles", Sue A. Kawashima ISBN '-7700-2352-9. It's like a reference but has example sentences in kana and romaji. It is also peppered with small illustrations which gives a little suport when you read the sentences, so the book isn't too dull. I think it's at least worth checking out.

I have both, and I think they fill different functions.

The former book is more useful as a reference when you need to find what a particular usage of a particle means; you look up the chapter on that particle and scan through the different usages.

The latter book is more useful when you want to say something but there are various particles that have overlapping meanings. It can help to tell the difference between them better & use the right one.
