Japanese doesn't have an 'fo' syllable, and the only 'f' sounding syllable is ふ. If you hear ふ it's not a hard 'f' like in English, it almost sounds like 'hu'. So the closest to an 'f' sound in Japanese is an 'h' sound. They are transliterating 'platform' using this 'h' sound.

That's not even close to true though.

1. English uses pronouns extremely often compared to Japanese, so even if you put all the Japanese pronouns together, they would not be spoken as often as "I".
2. While TONS of males use it, all of them don't. Pretty much no females use it. In english, EVERYONE uses I.

Your point is solid though, I find it odd how people react to 俺 on this forum.

Kids generally don't use 俺 though, at least not from my experience. They use the variations おら or おいら.

My favorite word has to be 然し（しかし）. I just like the feel of it. Because for some reason it sounds at least twice as dramatic compared to it's synonyms when I say it. Also many words and phrases from Kansai. That dialect just sounds a lot more lively Smile

I just use 俺 regularly and never looked back. I'm sure some people don't like it but no big deal.

僕 is useful in situations where 私 is too formal but you can't use 俺. I notice a lot of guys use it when speaking to me as they tend to be overful respectful since I am a foriegner. 俺 could be seen as presumptious and 私 is weird when they are friends of friends at an izakaya or something.

私 is also quite distant. I notice that once guys become fairly close at work with older work mates they will use 僕 since, I think, 私 implies that you are keeping them at a distance.

I also use 俺 in casual situations, but I think that all adult men will use 僕 at times (though some guys will never use 俺). It is also not so simple as you choose one for one situation I think. As in, I once was speaking to a guy who used 僕 first then about 2 sentences later used 俺. I was quite suprised.

On topic: probably my favorite phrase so far I heard in a drama. It was - 自分らしく生きてください. It's kind of like "Just be yourself" but I think the Japanese one contains a deeper better message Smile
