iKnow - Zarxrax - 2009-03-02

I finished the first two lessons recently and began the 3rd lesson. The increase in difficulty was huge. Before, it was all i+1 (maybe just because I already knew most of the words), but now I am encountering 2 or 3 new words in each sentence, and I'm not sure if it would be best for me to continue like this. Anyone else run into this problem? Should I just keep trying even though there is so much new stuff, or should I move on to something different?

What do you mean by 3rd lesson? Not items #30-40... ...you mean items #500-#750 or the third set in Core 2000, right?

At some point, you are going to feel the increase in difficulty from 3kyuu (1st 2 sets of Core 2000) to 2kyuu+ (everything up to end of Core 6000). With
2 or 3 new words in each sentence, it's okay if you can infer from the translations what their meanings are. Also, the difficulty of the sentences are spotty. Even with harder vocabulary, sometimes the sentences are really easy. There is actually a wide variety of sentence structures (but they seem to avoid any difficult grammar points that you need to study independently). My guess is, in your case, there is a mix of "unlucky harder sentences" and "your need to adapt to harder 2kyuu vocabulary".

1. How long is it taking for you to finish the new lessons compared to the old, easier lessons?
2. In a list of 10 words, how many have you seen before, now compared to before?

Ultimately, the most important thing is how this affects your motivation. But keep in mind that although iKnow makes the studying more enjoyable, you still have to work at it to get something back. Whatever method you use, I would expect it to be a little hard (but not too hard) or you're getting nothing back.

iKnow - Zarxrax - 2009-03-03

Yes, I meant core 2000 #3.
Well, completing the lessons on iknow isn't too difficult because it only focuses on 1 word of the sentence. I like to put all of the sentences into Anki though, so I can practice my listening comprehension (because I really suck at it, compared to reading). The problem is that the sentences contain a lot of vocabulary besides just the "one" word that I am supposed to learn. For instance, the following sentence: 彼は新製品に興味を示している。
When I saw this the first time, I did not know 新製品, 興味, or 示している. Of course the sentences with 3 new words are pretty rare I guess, but most of them now do seem to contain 2 words that are new to me.

iKnow - kfmfe04 - 2009-03-03

Okay. Our study methods are a little different.

I currently do not use Anki for iKnow - I want to try iKnow's spacing a bit before deciding it needs replacement. This allows me to go through sets of 10 items in less than 10 minutes, or about 500 items in 2-3 days.

In your case, for listening comprehension, I suggest you try using iKnow's Dictation program. If you can type back what has been said, and understand what you have typed, then your compehension should be sufficient.

As for not understanding:

彼は新製品に興味を示している。

That's normal coming from 3kyuu - but these are all very common 2kyuu vocabulary so part of this is just adjusting/picking up more vocab.

-----------------------------

Now, there are various approaches to learning sentences. A lot of people on this site adhere to some variation of AJATT with writing the sentence out, and stuffing them in Anki, etc... AJATT is slow and steady.

I prefer to go for speed/volume/repetition - perhaps that's why I like iKnow so much. If I see a word in enough contexts, it eventually sticks. I want to recognize/understand as quickly and as much as I can.

Relative to doing AJATT, that means my production will not be as good, but I should have better developed input/recognition skills, and I should have a stronger/bigger network between my bits of knowledge (another important part of memorization and recall).

Decide for yourself what works best for you.

-----------------------------

BTW, have you finished RTK? If you haven't done it yet, completing it will help you "really see and understand" the new 熟語 (じゅくご or Kanji compounds) as they come up.

iKnow - MeNoSavvy - 2009-03-03

Stupid question. Once you complete a unit in iknow (ie a block of 200 vocabulary), and move on to the next one, what is the iknow method for reviewing the earlier vocab? I've been using iknow for a short time, and once I have moved on to the next unit, I don't know how I'm supposed to review the earlier material?

iKnow - captal - 2009-03-04

iKnow is still down... wonder why.

iKnow - Herbo - 2009-03-04

I been waiting on getting my next lesson off there for a couple days now. Very annoying. Hopefully it is actually an upgrade rather than legal or financial troubles. I wouldn't be surprised if there wasnt at least some stuff on there that is in breach of copyright now that users can sumbit there own videos and pictures.

iKnow - Diana - 2009-03-04

I wonder if anyone here has stopped using Iknow for a while....

I'm having so much trouble keeping up with RtK, and I posted on here a while back about falling behind in even that. I think it's because I'm trying to do a lot ( and a lot in my personal life too!) that I've just had to give up something. Thus, I haven't been doing IKnow for a while, but I worry I'm going to have hell to pay when I finally get back on it ( Def. finishing RTK before that tho!)

iKnow - Herbo - 2009-03-04

Yeah I used it for a while and then stopped it to finish RTK. I stopped using the website though and moved to Anki. Just made things easier for me really.

iKnow - kfmfe04 - 2009-03-04

Pretty bad it's still down... ...they should've tested the new system in parallel for a smoother transition.

Does anyone have the Core2000 and/or Core6000 decks in Anki?

I searched on the threads, but the links are apparently all broken. Thanks in advance.

iKnow - MeNoSavvy - 2009-03-04

Damn, iknow is still down. I agree they should've tested the upgrade more carefully. Now I'm wondering if I'm better off importing the material into Anki even though I prefer the iknow interface.

iKnow - bodhisamaya - 2009-03-04

I hope there isn't a problem. I really like that site. Having study withdrawals Sad

iKnow - wccrawford - 2009-03-04

It looks like iKnow is becoming smart.fm. If you go to the developer's site, everything there is labeled with 'smart.fm' logos.

Then if you go to smart.fm, you can log in with your iKnow account and one of the study methods is 'iKnow', another is 'brain speed', etc.

Edit: Last night, I couldn't get the iKnow interface on Smart.fm to come up, but it's coming up now. Study at your own risk. Wink

iKnow - tibul - 2009-03-04

Just when I'm in the mood to do more iknow its down lol cries :'( oh well gives me chance to reinforce the vocab I've learned so far from iknow

Excellent! Thanks for the tip, mccrawford!

Too bad - I actually like the name iknow.co.jp better than smart.fm (less pretentious).

Too right! It sounds like a radio station now. I actually visited about 5 areas of the dev forum before I finally went to smart.fm because I thought it was an advert or something! lol

I prefer 'iKnow.co.jp' because you can look at the name and know what the idea is. 'smart.fm' just doesn't say 'come here to learn.'

MC Crawford ... lol Sounds like a rapper.

iKnow - kazelee - 2009-03-04

Mmmm.... Craaaack....

iKnow - Balaam - 2009-03-04

Congratulations to the iKnow developers - finally a pub quiz trainer worthy of respect! Big Grin

But seriously the additions of the curriculum for school subjects could change the way school children are tested if enough of them started using it!

iKnow - kfmfe04 - 2009-03-04

NNNNNNOOoooooooooo!

smart.fm has been taken down!!!

iKnow - Zarxrax - 2009-03-04

Well as for my problem, I think I've devised a plan. I'll go through an entire iknow lesson before adding anything to anki (maybe some of the vocab shows up again in other sentences in the lesson), and I'll just start drilling any specific words I don't know the old fashioned way, and once I am comfortable with the vocab then I'll start adding them to anki.

I need a hit! I need a freakin hit, man!

Why!? Why are they doing this to me? Is it because of that thing with the hooker? I swear she attacked me first, man, I swear!

iKnow - nwatkins - 2009-03-04

please come back iknow...

iKnow - kfmfe04 - 2009-03-04

weep, weep - please shoot me, now... <sob>

iKnow - nwatkins - 2009-03-04

at this rate i'm going to be forced to do rtk reviews..bleh

iKnow - Squintox - 2009-03-04

Nice to know I'm not the only one with the withdrawal symptoms
