Is there something like JWPce on Mac OS ?

JWPce is a text editor with an integrated EDICT dictionary lookup which is very useful for learning Japanese in general but also for writing emails and such.

What software would you recommend for editing Japanese text and looking up Japanese words on Mac ?

JEDict is the best bet you have on OsX dictionary-wise, it is also the only choice if you have Epwing dictionaries.

It has a built-in text editor and also a browser view in the latest release. That being said, the IME integration in OsX so good that I normally just type away in Mail.app.

Since 10.5 (Leopard) OS X has an integrated Japanese dictionary. You can lookup words you're typing on most programs (i.e., works on all Cocoa programs). It even works with spotlight -- just activate spotlight and start searching for the word you want.

The dictionary used in OS X is 大辞泉 for J-J, plus GENIUS for E-J/J-E, so it doesn't get any better than this. 220,000 main entries plus 25,000 thesaurus entries in 大辞泉 alone, and 70,000 or something in Genius.

Talk about value added. This alone was worth the price of the Leopard upgrade for me. Screw the other 300 features.

meushi Looks like what I was looking for, even better. Thank you!

pazustep Wow! I suspected there was something like that somewhere.. this OS is killing me !! O_O Good lord... it's got tons of sentences and you can even click the words everywhere to jump to other definitions!

I right-clicked a word and an option says "Lookup in the Dictionary". Perfect!

Pazustep,

thanks, I never thought about that! The dictionary is quite complete indeed, even containing the dreaded (for me) "托葉".

Just point at a word and hit Ctrl Command D for Dictionary popup ( macosxhints ).

One of the main reasons I love my mac is exactly this reason. This one doesn't translate well when I am trying to sell my friends and family on getting a mac and ditching windows, but personally for me, it's a huge perk.

sadly, the dictionary popup thing doesn't work in Firefox, which has many great Japanese related add-ons.

Not true. OSX actually has better choices than Windows for EPWING dictionary readers (although not as MANY choices). The one I use is Kotonoko (freeware). Although on a small few obscure dictionaries I use it has some rendering problems, 95% of everything renders perfectly (including GAIJI). Another choice is Jamming (shareware, multiplatform) which is more compatible, but costs money. Googling either should get you to the homepages. JEDict actually has a very poor interface in my opinion. I can't tell you about the EPWING functionality since you need to pay to get it, but I'm guessing it's displayed the same as EDICT dictionaries. The only reason JEDict remains on my computer is for the kanji lookup by elements.

Remember, if you need to look words up in Firefox, Perapera-kun or Rikaichan are invaluable add-ons.
