Why no pronunciation on cards - rebel - 2008-08-14

An explanation of frustration about the absence of pronunciation on the cards;

In one of my first cards (#17), I was asked to translate the letter "I".

I did not know, so I asked.

Next to the "I" appearen the kanji "吾".

Do I have to understand that "吾"is most probably is pronounced as "watakushi", also written as (私)?
If so, what is the difference in meaning?

Appologizes for my beginners-question".

It means "I" as in the first person pronoun.

As for the lack of readings on the cards, please refer to the replies in your other thread, and the "learn more" page of this website.

The problem is that you're not being asked to 'translate' anything. All of these are just keywords, used as a memory prompt to get you to write the kanji. They're not equivalents used for any kind of translation. Vocabulary is something else altogether.

It's actually the old kanji for 我が (わが), I believe. Or at least it's an alternate, unpopular one, because it's not used much. The kanji for わたくし/わたし is 私.

If you don't have the book, you're going to have a lot of trouble trying to use the site. Go get the book and read the instructions on how to use it, and chapter introductions sprinkled throughout, then come back here and start reviewing.

Hi rebel,

this site should be used in tandem with the method called "Remembering the Kanji" (it's a BOOK from University of Hawai'i Press, written by James W. Heisig).

Please check the Learn more page, download the SAMPLE Chapter in PDF format for more information.

Of course, if you really wanted to learn the readings (at least the onyomi), you could always try out my method:
