I don't know why that is.Darn that Heisig, and his no studying Japanese. ![]() Jk. I didn't actually listen to that warning. Probably why I keep getting these two confused. Ah well. I'm gunning for 1050 tonight. I'm gonna have to cut back on the video games. 50 wasn't such a large number before I started playing again. The Encouragement Thread - canji - 2008-08-02 I've reached 130. I should make it past 132 or 133 by tomorrow. The Encouragement Thread - sfekas - 2008-08-02 alyks Wrote:You're on! Nothing like a little challenge to keep from losing momentum in the home stretch.sfekas Wrote:On the encouragement front - I just got to 1727. The end is really in sight now. Like so many other people at this stage, I'm upping my numbers because I'm so close to the end. Still, it's amazing to look back on kanji that I had a hard time remembering 20 or 30 chapters ago and think about how I know them with no trouble now.I know, right? I just got to 1750 a few minutes ago. But the reviews are getting harder for me, and I'm finding harder to get the time to add my normal fifty a day. BUT THE END IS IN SIGHT! Kazelee, I feel your pain. I haven't played video games at all since I started on RevTK. Edit: Unless my wife goes into labor this week. Then you'll win by default. :-) The Encouragement Thread - alyks - 2008-08-02 Oh you know it's on. First to post in the finished thread wins! 1772! Oh, and congratulations on the baby. The Encouragement Thread - sfekas - 2008-08-03 Ouch. This challenge may kill me yet. 144 kanji between yesterday and today, putting me at 1859. If all goes well, I'll be done by Tuesday. (But more likely Wednesday or Thursday.) So, we don't hijack the thread completely, let me point out that I didn't go at this pace when I started out. It took me about 1000 kanji to really get a pattern going that worked for me. When it clicked, my pace picked up a bit. Also, setting goals (even arbitrary ones) helps. In my case, the first goal was to finish the book before the baby arrives (and thanks for the congratulations, alyks). That gave me a solid incentive, but the challenge with alyks is really giving me the drive to keep going through this last bit. (I sure am looking forward to a break from new kanji - I figure I'll have my hands full with review for quite a while.) All of which is to say that RTK is totally doable, especially with the help of the people on this site. The Encouragement Thread - alyks - 2008-08-03 Oh no! I haven't done any today and I'm still at 1773! I guess I better get to work! I'll catch up with you yet! A bit of a friendly challenge is very helpful. I wasn't going to do any today because I was feeling down, but there's no way I'm letting you get that far ahead of me! The Encouragement Thread - canji - 2008-08-03 I just made it to 150, so I challenge anyone to a race to 170. The Encouragement Thread - canji - 2008-08-04 Sweet, looks like I made it to 190 before anyone else could even post! The Encouragement Thread - kazelee - 2008-08-04 Keep it up Canji. I'm at 1050. I'm gunning for 1100 tonight. Though I might be cut short. ![]() I wish to finish before school starts at the end of this month. What are my chances guys? Edit: Man. Just did the math. Gonna have to keep hitting that 50 if hope to make it. Sfekas, you or Alyks have any tips for getting those sick numbers in? The Encouragement Thread - alyks - 2008-08-04 Kazelee, the trick to making 50 a day is demonstrated in this helpful diagram: ![]() In all honesty, the only way I was able to keep up 50 a day was by getting into a routine like this: 9:30 - wake up 9:30-11:00 - review 11:00-11:30 - Morning swim then breakfast/review 11:30 ON THE DOT - I start learning new kanji 11:30-2:30 - Learning kanji! If I didn't get finished by about 2:30, I didn't press on, because I'm really not that productive in the afternoons. I'd finish whatever I had in the evening after dinner. The trick is finding the times when you're most productive and exploiting them. I got a few unused stacks lying around. This session was a bit easier as most of the stories I used came from the site. Managed to get 50 in about 2 hours. I'm gonna make tomorrows review as good a possible. I'm 90 percent nocturnal. It's 5am as I post now. I work best when, statically, the human mind should be at its most sluggish. Weird, no? 1100 BABY!!! I'd go further, but my bro is snoring right next to me and it's driving me insane. Mata The Encouragement Thread - AdamLeliel - 2008-08-04 450! I started doing this last week (I think?), for motivation: ![]() It now has the number "400" on and four sheets instead of two. ![]() That's how I set out my desk when I'm doing the stuff... kanji book to practice handwriting, sheet of paper for "guessing" and a notebook for sentences (but I'm trying to use less sentences now until I finish up with RTK). Oh, and that's not a Pink CD... it's a Boris CD . The Encouragement Thread - hector - 2008-08-04 I just hit 1/4 last night (I am at frame 514 now!). So far it has been a piece of cake, but I guess I will have to rely on the site stories from now on... I liked it better when they gave you everything chewed and you just had to read the stories ![]() By the way Kazelee, I have to do about 60 a day to finish before leaving to japan in september. I had a hard time yesterday to reach that number. I think it is better to do less some days, and then when you have a good day do a lot more. You dont have to stop at the '50' number, just do what you feel like. The Encouragement Thread - kazelee - 2008-08-04 hehe. Yeah. You're probably right. The Encouragement Thread - mentat_kgs - 2008-08-04 kazelee not weird at all. The monophasic sleep is a social misconception. Biologicaly our species is probably triphasic, at least biphasic. It means our ancestores sleeped 3 periods/day. There are records that this kept on until before modern age, just ~400 years ago. "Natural" sleep is well discussed. You dont have to stop at the '50' number, just do what you feel like.I think you're absolutely right, hector. Some days it just isn't working, while some days it goes great. Also, your pace will improve as you get further along. The last 500 have gone by much faster than, say, 500 to 1000 did. If you have serious time to devote to it, you can definitely reach the end by September. I'm less than 100 away from finishing and I got here in 7 weeks. If I had more time during the week, I probably could have done it faster. The Encouragement Thread - alyks - 2008-08-04 Oh man, I'm gonna lose. Numerous setbacks forced me to skip a day and a half. I'm only on 1875 after today =[. The Encouragement Thread - sfekas - 2008-08-04 alyks Wrote:Oh man, I'm gonna lose. Numerous setbacks forced me to skip a day and a half. The Encouragement Thread - QuackingShoe - 2008-08-04 ...delivered a baby in a malfunctioning elevator? Edit: Alyks, your edit makes my post look superfluous! The Encouragement Thread - sfekas - 2008-08-04 alyks Wrote:...a lot?Kanji, kanji, kanji. My brain is a little fried right now because I'm working above my ideal pace (probably 60 on a weekend day), but the end is so close I can't stop. QuackingShoe Wrote:...delivered a baby in a malfunctioning elevator?:-) Scary thought. Edit: Ha, I need to be more careful when I post stuff like that. No, no baby yet. But I did learn 98 new kanji. The Encouragement Thread - canji - 2008-08-05 I made it to 180. I expect that I'll probably be stuck on 180 until the next one I learn. The Encouragement Thread - alyks - 2008-08-05 Jeez, I have less than 180 to go before I'm done. Weird. When I hit 150 I thought "Whoa man, 150 is a lot!" Where I am now I think "150? That's it? Let's just get the damn thing over with." The Encouragement Thread - canji - 2008-08-05 alyks Wrote:When I hit 150 I thought "Whoa man, 150 is a lot!"How long ago were you at 150? The Encouragement Thread - alyks - 2008-08-05 Er, three days after starting. So... 44 days ago. |
