The Encouragement Thread - Andres - 2010-12-12 adoette Wrote:Yeah, thanks. Today I kept doing more and actually got to 172.Andres Wrote:I've just started three days ago and I'm on 126 but I'll probably do more today. I'm gonna try to 150 today and then later do 50/40 a day if that's not too much. You'll find the first 500 or so just fly by! Keep that pace as long as you can, you're doing great! The Encouragement Thread - adoette - 2010-12-14 My happy encouraging feeling of the day is the realization that I've only got 15 paper flashcards left before I have to cut more. The last time I cut them I cut about 350. And it wasn't that long ago! Hooray! Another lesson bites the dust! The Encouragement Thread - mpacheco - 2010-12-17 Just clicked on the "Good" button in Anki for Adhere, frame 1000. About half-way there! Feels really great to reach this milestone. After two years of mediocre classes in Japanese, and after living here in Tokyo for about a year and a half, I can say without a doubt that kanji has been the #1 roadblock for me. Speaking and listening are cake, but I'm not a very visual person (musician by trade, in fact) so kanji has been a major bitch. I really feel like I'm well on my way to conquering that mountain though.
The Encouragement Thread - michaeltrew - 2010-12-18 Well done! 1000 is quite a feat. I am pleased to have reached the milestone of completing section 1. However I am a little concerned that I have not really 'worked' a handful of kanji- about 10 to 15. I may go back and revise stories before moving on even if it is annoying! Learn then ONCE only! Does anyone have experince of writing stories out? I have been doing so recently and really helps to clarify it and then the visual aide is easier too. What do you think? Or just writing a colorful story? An example would be nice if you have one.
The Encouragement Thread - michaeltrew - 2010-12-18 Just sorted out my dodgy stories. Ready to move on. Amazed that this really does work doesnt it!! Let me share my story for Bowl. I take a large metal bowl and rip up my Heisig book into little bits. Then, along with a pinch of salt and lots of water, make a delicious kanji mixture. It's the alternative to Heisig study- just eat a teaspoon a day. Make sure it's a metal bowl though, not glass or the kanjis will fade away for ever... M The Encouragement Thread - michaeltrew - 2010-12-30 I just saw my friend Joey divide a muzzled giraffe clean in half with his saber! What an incredible world RTK is! The Encouragement Thread - Revenant - 2010-12-30 I had a whopping 535 reviews piling up over the last few weeks... when I hit like 300 I tried timeboxing 50-100 a time, but I couldn't defeat the masses any longer (currently 900 Kanji added)... Today I decided to go to review and hold f and y down and answer all yes... to get the review pile down to 0 and to be finally able to add new cards... Most of these are now in box 6 so they won't terrorize me anytime soon... these reviews kept me from adding new cards and after a few weeks from coming to the site altogether, because the sheer amount had me not wanting to continue... With this act of cheating, I freed myself... hopefully I can continue forward and not forget too many of the ones forwared... or they come back at me soon, in the hundreds Q_Q The Encouragement Thread - howtwosavealif3 - 2011-01-02 http://www.youtube.com/wath?v=MWdnH_z2SG0&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL watch from 11:11!! before this video gets removed. um i liked football before bakariziumu but you know this one's really funny and easy to undersatnd. The Encouragement Thread - Miyumera - 2011-01-02 I got to 823! YAY... It's starting to feel grueling though =\ and I'm so close yet so far from 1000. If all goes well and I keep to schedule I'll be there in a week...lol.. which sounds quite far away to me. I'm starting to need visual things as motivators like keeping track of my kanji numbers on my msn or fb status so it's right in my face that my progress is incomplete. The Encouragement Thread - Sheepy - 2011-01-05 Came across an old post of me saying I was up to 600 kanji, now up to 1250. Feeling good. Im aiming to be finished before Febuary. The Encouragement Thread - wulfgar - 2011-01-07 hey, i need some encouragement along my 日本語 journey. The passion and the meaning of my Japanese learning has tanked. I'm taking a 4 month break to focus on school and I hope during that break i hope i can find meaning back in my Japanese learning... The Encouragement Thread - EratiK - 2011-01-07 Well, I guess introspection can be a good cure... But also remember the samourai way: falling seven times, but rising again. Why not do extra-learning stuff while focusin on school? Like watching J-movies or anime. Or try to meet J people in your area? I know the more I'm exposed, the more I want to learn, and it rekindles itself when I'm relaxed/rested. Anyway, good luck! The Encouragement Thread - michaeltrew - 2011-01-08 Well, hopefully this is some encouragement to fellow Japanese studiers. I have been Heisig-ing for 3 months ish and slowly made my way to just below the 1000 mark, but now it is all starting to make sense. I live in Nagoya, Japan so this makes things easier but as a result of Heisig study I can - recognise 800 Kanji and have a meaning for them - learn on yomi from Roadsigns as I cycle to work each day - after reading signs make a good guess as readings and meanings of new kanji compound vocab words. You may disagree, but I honestly think Heisig's work is a God send for us. When I started studying Japanese, I knew that kanji would be the killer, so was praying for the ability to learn, then Heisig's work cane into my path. But why do we learn Japanese at all? The only reason is to communicate isn't it- while it may be fun etc, languages are a tool for relationships which is what life is about. I have just been out to town and was able to talk with people, understand signs and notices, and COmmunicate! Thats the best encouragement for me as I crack on to pass the 1000 by Monday night!!! The Encouragement Thread - michaeltrew - 2011-01-08 Oh, and I've also really enjoyed learning kanji with good quality fountain pen. Makes them look really beautiful and is very encouraging!! The Encouragement Thread - Mr Pacman - 2011-01-10 I just started a few days ago. I'm already at 395. Its amazing, I used to think of them as weird black squiggly things, but now I start to break down kanji into primitives as soon as I see them. Just the other day I was looking at some artwork with kanji on it. It was great to recognize the one for fish. =D (Painting had koi fish on it.) I'm doing my best to finish in at least three months. Edit: Now 435 =D But 100+ reviews a day. ![]() I see what people are saying about rushing now. The Encouragement Thread - Lycan - 2011-01-11 Im at 1756 The finish line is in sight =) The Encouragement Thread - michaeltrew - 2011-01-11 Mr pacman- you're right re rushing- I have decided, at the 1000 ish mark to hold back and not add new cards for a while. 120 reviews a day is not good eh! Congratulations to Lycan! The Encouragement Thread - Mr Pacman - 2011-01-11 Grats =D Just hit 500 myself =D Using kanji desktop, and self drawn poster to encourage myself. The first 500 really do fly by. I've tried to learn for a few years now, but I had no one to speak with and I was using audio tapes. I fell in love with Japanese reading manga. So learning to read and write will be better for me, easy to stay encouraged. Edit: Someone mentioned seeing kanji pics are encouraging. So Here is my kanji study spot. ![]() I always try to keep my kanji balanced. Edit: Still working for my goal. Now at 568. =D Over 200 reviews today, doing my best but I'm not very imaginative. Finally getting some cards in my 3rd pile, those cards really show me what stories stick in my head. Edit: Been sick with a cold, but I finished my reviews and have reached 600. Edit: Now at 634. Just did 126 card review, passed 72%. So I guess my long term retention is fine. Third pile is growing slowly every day. =D Edit: Now at 700 after only eight days of study. =) Edit: After a long extended day of studying, I have reached 800, on the same day as reaching 700. =D I've had lots of free time to cram kanji. I never miss a review, and I do remember most of them so far. Now I'm gonna sleep for 12 hours. =p The Encouragement Thread - Mr Pacman - 2011-01-15 I'm really just posting to encourage myself, its easy to give up if you don't have an online community following your progress. Good news, another day another hundred down. =D I am now at 900! @michaeltrew I'm not sure if I'll slow down after hitting 1000, I think I'll refine my study routine to handle the extra reviews. The Encouragement Thread - michaeltrew - 2011-01-16 Great job! I know what you mean re posting as encouragement to self. Odd one isn't it, but true Well done on the 900. It seems to be all about finding your own pace, but perhaps I should crack on over the thousand asap... Rather lingering at early 900s at moment. Snow in japan! Makes me think of my story for winter! The Encouragement Thread - Ace Tympass - 2011-01-16 nice!! i feel the encouragement now too!! keep posting ...i mean keep encouraging...!! ^o^ “Encouragement is the oxygen of the soul.” – Anonymous even the kanji for ENCOURAGEMENT (励) shows that it gives you the "power" to cross "ten thousand cliffs"!! The Encouragement Thread - Kanjiiz - 2011-01-16 I've finished RTK a year ago, and now I'm starting from the beginning, lost the feeling for Kanji writing, stroke order and mnemonics creation, but that won't bring me down, I'm determined like never before!! The Encouragement Thread - Mr Pacman - 2011-01-16 Thanks. Been sick lately, I have only done a review today. Rushing has caused me to have tons of immature cards, reviewed 166 today, gonna restudy all the ones I failed. The Encouragement Thread - Lycan - 2011-01-17 I wanted to get a lot done over the weekend... but chose drinking instead At 1907 now Lesson 51 was really bad Anways 5 Lessons and 135 Kanji to go =) P.S. 1998 today I´m going to finish it tomorrow !! :> |
